    A castle town was built around and revolved around the life of the castle and its lord (daimyo). The town provided housing for samurai who served the daimyo, as well as others involved in castle life. Though calm on the surface, the castle town was strategically planned with defensive structures like towers, gateways and stone-dropping chutes to protect the lord and castle residents.
