CATHOLIC HIGH SCHOOL

SECONDARY TWO SCIENCE

CHEMISTRY MINI PROJECT

Introduction
This group-based project is on the topic of Bonding. The project allows you to
reflect and make connections between the symbolic and microscopic aspects of
Chemistry to your life experiences.

In keeping with the spirit of the project title, this project will be strictly done in
groups of 3 - 4 members.

Project Requirements

1 Your group needs to research on one type of bonding. You are required to give
an example of a substance that is formed by such bond, and explain and
describe the formation of such bond and the atoms that are involved. You are
also required to explore the properties of this substance and relate the bonding to
its properties.

2 Your group also needs to choose an element found in the periodic table
and research on its physical and chemical properties. Based on the
properties, devise a commercial use for this element.

3 Submit a hardcopy of your report with substantial content information

covering 3 - 5 pages. Pages such as Title Page, Table of Content,
References, Credits, Glossary and Appendices (Your completed Research
Plan and Research Guide) are not included in the 3-5 pages requirement.
Your report must have a diagram of the bonding and use colour to
differentiate the different atoms in the substance.

4 Plagiarism will end in deduction of substantial marks. If you are not sure if
your paraphrasing of a written text is acceptable, please consult your
teacher with a sample of your work.

5 All groups also have to make a 5 minutes presentation using PowerPoint,

Glogster, Animoto, posters or web pages. Presentation has to include the
information on bonding - description of the bonding and a short animation
on how the bonds are formed in terms of electrons. Presentation will
commence on Term 4 wk 1.

6 The typeset of your report should be: 1.5 spacing, Times New Roman Font
Size 12.
Deadline

The hardcopy of the written report (including research plan) for this project must
be submitted to your teacher on or before Term 3 Week 9 - Monday, 16 August
2010. Marks will be deducted for late submission.

Grading & Weightage

The assessment rubric for the report and presentation is provided online to guide
you through the project. This project carries 20% of SA2 marks.
