Need Statistics?
Need to know the per capita income of Ada or Pontotoc County for one of your class proj-
ects? Go to http://www.census.gov to find out.The U.S. Census Bureau keeps a wide va-
riety of statistics, not just the decennial (every ten years) census. You can find information about
the local economy, people and household make-up. National statistics are accessible on topics
ranging from income to hobbies and pet ownership.
The website is very user friendly with information available in multiple formats. For ex-
perts, information is available in Excel spreadsheets and data that can be imported into Geograph-
ical Information Systems (GIS) for map making. For those less inclined to fire-up Excel or GIS
software, information is available on standard web pages. The Census Bureau webpage includes
multi-media sections with photos, video and audio news segments. Their Facts for Features sec-
tion is great for trivia hunters! Want to know how much candy Americans consume every year?
Check out their Halloween feature. By the way, Americans consumed 24.3 pounds per capita of
candy in 2009.

Other fascinating facts:

•African-Americans are 13.6% of the U.S. population and are projected to be 15% of
the U.S. population in 2050.

•14% of the military is female.

•36.9 Americans claim Irish ancestry. Only German ancestry is claimed by more
Americans.

•There are 1,644 jewelry manufacturers in the United States.
