ABSTRACT
This report on Students Industrial Work Experience Scheme (SIWES) is mainly to
help all categories of students to succeed and achieve their various academic life
ambitions. It is therefore, important for students in tertiary institution. Indeed, it’ll
hopefully be useful for graduate who stay at home to improve themselves
technically. Therefore, this report will be useful for students preparing for this
supervised Industrial work experience scheme and work service as a guide to them.

This report is dedicated to God Almighty for his mercy, help and protection over
my live and that of my family and also to my parents, Mr. & Mrs. Enefola
Christopher for their support both morally and financially during this programme.

CHAPTER ONE
1.1 HISTORY OF ITF
The Students Industrial Work Experience Scheme otherwise known as
SIWES is a practical oriented scheme designed to get participants acquainted
with life outside the classroom before he or she graduates.
The Industrial Training Fund (ITF) founded the Students Industrial Work
Experience Scheme (SIWES) in 1973 under the Federal Government of Nigeria
with its head quarter at Jos-Plateau State of Nigeria.
SIWES is a skill training programme designed to expose and prepare
students of institution of higher learning for the industrial work; situations they
are likely to meet after graduation. The scheme is also meant to familiarize
students with work methods and expose them to the needed experience in
handling such equipments and machineries that are usually available in the
educational institution.
1.2 ORGANIZATIONAL PROFILE
45NAF Hospital was founded on 3rd Nov 1971 at NAF Base Makurdi to meet
the need of personnel and their families in the base in terms of medical health care
assistance . In 1976 the hospital founded another department known as Admine to
keep the record of what is going on in the clinic for future purpose. The hospital
continue to grow stil its present with more department to it name.

MICROSOFT WORD

2,1 FEATURES OF MICROSOFT WORD


The following are the features of Microsoft Word:
 Title Bar: This helps to display the title of the package currently open.
 Standard Tool Bar: This helps to display tools like Font style, font
size etc.
 Formatting Tool Bar: This helps to display the tools necessary for
formatting a document. E.g. bold, italics, underline, alignment etc.
 Menu Bar: This displays the menus like File, Edit, View, Insert,
Format, Table etc
 Drawing Tool Bar: This displays tools like Auto shape, Textbox, fill
colour, outline colour and Shadow etc.
 Task Bar: This displays the current documents open.

2.2MICROSOFT WORD ENVIRONMENT


Microsoft environment is referred to as the working page. This is a
blank page where the user can easily type his text by the help of the keyboard
File Menu: This contains commands like: New, Open, Save, Save As, Close,
Print, Print Preview, Page Setup and Exit.
Edit Menu: This contains commands like: Paste, Cut, Copy, Undo, Redo etc.
View Menu: This contains commands like: Replace, Find, Document Map,
Page Layout etc.
Insert Menu: This contains commands like: Page break, Page number,
Symbol, Object etc

Format Menu: This contains commands like: Paragraph, Change Case,
Borders and Shading, Bullets and Numbering etc.
Table Menu: This contains commands like: Insert, Delete, Auto Format etc.
Formatting Documents in Microsoft Word
After typing a work in Microsoft Word environment, it has to be
formatted to give it a good look by using commands like Bold, Italics,
Underline, Alignment, font style, font size etc.
To bold a text, highlight the text and click bold icon on the formatting
toolbar.
To italicize a text, highlight the text and click italics icon on the
formatting toolbar.
To underline a text, highlight the text and click under line icon on the
formatting toolbar.
To set the alignment of a text, highlight the text and click left, centre,
right or justify alignment icon on the formatting toolbar.
To assign a font style to a text, highlight the text and click font style
button on the standard toolbar, select your choice and it will apply.
To increase/decrease the font size of a text, highlight the text and click
font size button on the standard toolbar, select your choice and it will apply.
To Print a Document in Microsoft Word
 Click file on the menu bar
 Click print
 In the printer dialogue box, select the printer name
 In the print dialogue box, click properties
 Make your changes in the printer properties
 Click ok and click ok again

Creating Table in Microsoft Word
 Click table on the menu bar
 Click insert
 Click table
 In dialogue box displayed, select the number of columns, rows and
click ok
Applying Border to a Page
 Click format on the menu bar
 Click borders and shading
 In the borders and shading dialogue box click page border
 Select the border of your choice
 Click ok

INTRODUCTION TO MICROSOFT EXCEL
Microsoft Excel is an Application Package which is used in tabulation
of data, statistical operations and calculation.
Loading Microsoft Excel
Microsoft Excel can be loaded by
 clicking start
 point to all program
 point to Microsoft Office
 Click Excel.
FEATURES OF MICROSOFT EXCEL
The following are the features of Microsoft Excel:

WORKBOOK/WORKSHEET IN MICROSOFT EXCEL

A Workbook is a collection of worksheet. A workbook normally
contains three worksheets.
A worksheet is a collection of rows and columns. The intersection of
rows and columns in Microsoft Excel forms a worksheet. A worksheet can be
named by the column name and row number.
BASIC OPERATIONS IN MICROSOFT EXCEL
In Microsoft Excel, worksheets can be added at the same can be
deleted.
INSERT WORKSHEET
 After loading Microsoft Excel
 Position your mouse where you want to insert a new worksheet
 Click insert menu on the menu bar
 Click worksheet
DELETE WORKSHEET
 After loading Microsoft Excel
 Right click on the worksheet you want to delete
 Click delete and the worksheet will be deleted
3.1SIMPLE CALCULATIONS IN MICROSOFT EXCEL
Microsoft Excel can be used to perform simple calculations like the
average, addition, subtraction, division and other simple calculations.
Example 1: To calculate the sum of numbers in row 1 to row 10 in
column A, we perform the following procedures:
To achieve the above, you place your mouse pointer in the row where
you want the answer to display then type in =sum (a1:a10) and press enter
key, then the answer will be displayed.

Example 2: To calculate the average of numbers in row 1 to row 10 in
column B, we perform the following procedures:
To achieve the above, you place your mouse pointer in the row where
you want the answer to display then type in =average (b1:b10) and press enter
key, then the answer will be displayed.
Example 3: To calculate the total numbers (count) of numbers in row 1
to row 10 in column C, we perform the following procedures:
To achieve the above, you place your mouse pointer in the row where
you want the answer to display then type in =count (c1:c10) and press enter
key, then the answer will be displayed.
Example 4: To calculate the maximum number in row 1 to row 10 in
column D, we perform the following procedures:
To achieve the above, you place your mouse pointer in the row where
you want the answer to display then type in =max (d1:d10) and press enter
key, then the answer will be displayed.
Example 5: To calculate the minimum number in row 1 to row 10 in
column E, we perform the following procedures:
To achieve the above, you place your mouse pointer in the row where
you want the answer to display then type in =min (e1:e10) and press enter
key, then the answer will be displayed.

COMPUTER OPERATION

SOFTWARE
Software is the collection of computer programs and related data that
provide the instructions telling a computer what to do.
It can also be referred to as one or more computer programs and data
held in the storage of the computer for some purposes. Software is intangible,
meaning it "cannot be touched".
Examples of computer software include: System software, Application
software, Device Drivers and so on.
HARDWARE
Computer hardware refers to the physical parts of a computer and
related devices. Internal hardware devices include motherboards, hard drives,
and RAM. External hardware devices include monitors, keyboards, mouse,
printers and scanners.
6.1 STARTING UP THE SYSTEM
Starting up the system refers to the process of booting the system. In
booting the system the following procedures are taken: after making sure the
switch is on from the wall, the stabilizer is on and everything is set, press the
start button on the system unit and the computer starts booting.
SHUTTING DOWN THE SYSTEM
Shutting down the computer system refers to switching off the computer system. To
achieve this, the following procedures are taken into consideration.
• Click Start

• Point to turn off
• Click turn off
• Click turn off again
We have “Normal” and “Abnormal” shutdown.
Normal Shutdown: Is the right way of shutting down the computer i.e.
following the normal process of shutting down the computer.
Abnormal Shutdown: Is the wrong way of shutting down the computer i.e.
not following the normal process of shutting down the computer fighter by
pressing the start button to switch it off or switching off the socket directly.
LAUNCHING APPLICATION PACKAGES
Launching Application Packages can simply be referred to as starting
up an Application Package. This is done by clicking on the start button,
pointing to all programs and locating the Application Package you want to
open.
For example, launching Microsoft Word you click on Start button, point
to All Programs, point to Microsoft Office, locate Microsoft Word and click
it.
FEATURES OF DESKTOP
The major features of desktop are:
 My Computer
 My Document
 My Network places
 Internet explorer

CHARPTER THREE

PROBLEMS IDENTIFIED

Despite the benefits attached to the SIWES program, few problems were still
encountered during the course of the program. Some of these problems are:
• Lack of transportation fare which at times made it difficult for me to get
to my place of program
• Harassment from the customers when you are unable to complete their
jobs as expected due to circumstances beyond your control.
• Harassment from the Director of the organization whenever I come late
due to scarcity of transport means.
• Inadequate power supply and power interruption
• Distance from SIWES venue

CHAPTER FOUR

CONCLUSION
Conclusively, I will like to say that it takes determination for one to become
anything in life. With these training, students should determine and have the ultimate
aim of becoming somebody in life.
While on the programme, students must try to behave well and be ready and willing
to learn so that they will be exposed to the practical aspect of what they are being
taught in their various institutions.
Finally, government and establishment should give their support as at when
due, so as to encourage the students.
Incompetence in workplace is related to the kind or quality of training in the school.
To improve on the scheme’s implementation, students should be placed in industries
relevant to their fields of study. There is need for greater cooperation between
industries and educational institutions on how best to implement the SIWES
programme. It can thus be concluded that in spite of apparent economic difficulties,
the SIWES in Nigerian Institutions are attaining its objectives; and that industrial
experience in real setting is very necessary if the attainment of SIWES objectives
will be fully realized because it offers the students leaning experiences which cannot
be directly gained in the class room.

RECOMMENDATION
The operation of SIWES lies on the proper supervision. Thus, it becomes
necessary that something must be done at the operational level to enhance adequate
functioning of the programme. In line with these findings, the following
recommendation area made:
1. ITF should ensure the regular visitation of the ITF officers to Supervising
Agencies Institutions, employers and students on attachment.
2. The log-book issued to students at attachment by institutions must be checked and
signed by the institutions’ and ITF Supervisors responsible during supervision not in
their offices at the end of attachment.
3. All the institutions involved should be organizing orientation courses in
collaboration with the ITF for their students prior to their attachment with the
attendance made mandatory for the students accepted for SIWES and ITF staff.
4. The training department of ITF should be providing adequate information about
the biennial SIWES National Conference and Workshops on time.
