This chapter provides conclusions and recommendations from a study of friction stir spot welding (FSSW) on copper alloys. The conclusions are that FSSW can weld copper alloys that conventional spot welding cannot. Preheat dwell time, tool rotation speed, and plunge depth most affect joint strength. Microhardness is highest in the weld region. Recommendations for future work include developing machines to control FSSW parameters like torque and rotation speed, modeling and simulating FSSW, studying tool shape and dissimilar alloy effects, and obtaining relationships between weld strength and variables like feed rate and plunge depth.

According to results of the present study for FSSW process on
selected copper alloy, several conclusions can be written regarding alloy weldability and mechanical properties. 1. Poor weldability alloys by conventional spot welding process as copper alloy (426/1CuZn 10) can be welded using different (FSSW) parameters giving different welding results. 2. Preheat dwell time is very effective parameter on the welding process for high thermal conductivity alloys and small thickness. 3. Main welding parameters affected joints strength are tool rotating speed and plunging depth of tool. 4. It was found that there is direct relation between above parameters and strength of joints. Total time for welding process is more effective parameter than other. 5. The maximum weld force obtained was (420N) for sheet thickness (0.5 mm) with rotating speed 2000 rpm and total time 70 s. 6. the microhardness in welding region was 97 HV higher than shoulder region 76 HV and base metal 67 HV.
67 Chapter five: Conclusions and Recommendations
5-2 Recommendation for Future Work
There are some important areas that would be beneficial to investigate in future are listed below: 1. Investigate to develop special machine for FSSW have control on torque and high rate of rotating speed (2000-4000 rpm). 2. investigate to develop modeling and simulation for friction stir spot welding. 3. Study the effect of shape for probe tool on welds joint properties. 4. Study (FSSW) process for dissimilar alloys. 5. Investigate other types of FSSW and compare their effect on mechanical properties and microstructural characteristics of welds joints. 6. Obtaining the relationship between weld strength and feed rate, rpm, dwell, and depth of plunge for a given tool.
