UTHAKASHANTHI: For the purification of mind and body and
protection of the boy, all eities are invoked in water through
chanting of the mantra a ~pter is poured over the boy during
the Uthakashanti.

BRAHMOPADESAM: The father, who becomes

Guru to his son, whispers into the boy's ears the
Powerful Gayathri Mantra - a Supreme Mantra, which
protects those who recite it properly.

SURYA DARSANAM: The boy is taken outside for

shOWing the Sun as it is believed that the Surya
Deva would protect him. Both the palms of the boy are clasped in
such a way that a peep hole is created between two middle fingers to
view the Sun.

THE TWIG IN THE RIGHT HAND: The boy is given a twig to hold
by his right hand, usually a twig from the Pipal tree - signifying his
entry into Brahmacharyam; it is believed that all the three devatas -
Brahma, Vishnu and Shiva reside in Pipal tree - and thus, the boy,
holding the pipal twig in hand, receives the divine grace from the
three devatas & also from their respective consorts, Saraswati, Lakshmi
and Durga.
