Hydrostatic Test Pressure Calculation

Hydrostatic Test Pressure, P = 2St / D

where,

P = Hydrostatic test pressure in psi

S = pipe wall stress in psi
ASTM -50% of the specified minimum yield strength for austenitic alloy and
stainless steel pipe
JIS -60% of the specified minimum yield strength for austenitic alloy and
stainless steel pipe
t = Nominal Wall Thickness (mm)
D = Nominal Outside Diameter (mm)

Current computation using 15 KSI :

S for 304 = 50 % of 205 N/mm2 = 102.5 N/mm2 = 14.86 KSI ~ 15KSI
(convert to PSI based on conversion factor 1 N/mm2 = 145 psi)

Example:
For industrial pipe 12” x Sch 10,

Nominal Wall Thickness = 4.57 mm

Nominal Outside Diameter = 323.85 mm
Pipe wall stress = 102.5 N/mm2 = 14862.5 psi
(conversion factor, 1 N/mm2 = 145 psi)

Therefore,

P = {2 (14862.5) (4.57) } / 323.85

= 419.5 psi
= 450 psi ( rounded to nearest 50 psi)

* For 1000 PSI and above, rounded-up to the nearest 100 PSI;
* For below 1000 PSI, rounded-up to
