A. PROJECT TOPIC
DESIGN OF A MOTORIZED SCREW JACK FOR VEHICLES

B. STATEMENT OF PROBLEM
Screw Jack or commonly known as ‘‘Car Jack’’ is one of the simplest mechanical Power Scr
ews Application used in the elevation of vehicles or objects. The operation of t
he screw jack is such that it comprises a handle for driving a bolt element (Lea
d Screw) so as to adjust the height of the Jack to elevate a vehicle or an objec
t. This is done manually. The operation of the jack manually makes it difficult
for most women to operate the handle since much effort is needed to drive the sc
rew jack which results in low linear speed, and also the operation is time consu
ming.
This project is aimed at modifying the existing design by integrating an electri
c motor with the existing screw jack. This can be achieved by finding a low spee
d motor that is rated at 12V. This is because the battery output of an automobil
e is 12V, and the power needed for the operation of the screw jack will be taken
from this battery.

C. OBJECTIVE
The objectives of this project work are:
• To Design the power screw feasible to be integrated with the motor.
• To Design members of the jack to suit the modification.
• To select a speed reduction gear to be able to withstand the high torque which w
ill be exerted on the 12V motor, since 12V motors are normally of high speed.
D. JUSTIFICATION
The present modification has arisen to ease and/or prevent the afore-mentioned d
isadvantages of the existing screw jack.
