1. Choose the correct alternatives for any Eight of the following: [8 × 0.25 = 2]
Group –B
(Short Answer Type Question)
Answer any three of the following: [3 × 2= 6]
2. Explain series parallel operation of DC traction drives. What are the advantages of this system? Why do you
use DC series motor for traction drive?
3. Explain with speed – torque characteristics, how you can control speed of AC drives? Out of different type of
control, explain why slip power recovery system is helpful?

technique by power electronics drives is the need of the present electrical drive system which is replacing
electrically controlled drives.
5. What you mean by constant power & constant torque drives. Explain with torque-speed characteristics how
can you comment that armature control falls under constant torque & field control falls under constant power.
Which type of drives falls under constant power & constant torque region?
6. While purchasing an electric drive motor what are the important parameters of the motor you will like to
know while drawing specification of the motor?
7. Explain with phasor diagram the effect of injecting e.m.f. in the rotor circuit of induction motor. Show that
speed decrease when injected e.m.f. is in phase opposition to standstill voltage .
8. Explain the speed control of AC drives with PWM.

(Long Answer Type Question)
Answer any Two of the following: [2 × 3.5 = 7]
9. a) Draw the circuit diagram of step down chopper showing output voltage which will be fed to DC shunt
motor armature for speed control of DC drives. What do you mean by speed regulation?
b) Draw the four quadrant operation system & explain forward-motoring, forward braking, reverse-motoring and
reverse braking.

10. a) Explain different type of braking that can be employed in DC drives system. Explain the circuit diagram
regarding dynamic & regenerating braking in DC drives.
b) A step up chopper has to increase 200 V input to 400 V DC output. If 100 μs is TOFF, what will be TON and
frequency of the chopper operation.
11. a) What do you mean by V.S.I. and C.S. I.? Explain with circuit diagram.\
b) Explain the application of 3-phase inverter with 180° operation for speed control of 3-phase induction motor.
12. a) What are the disadvantages of speed control of induction motor by changing voltage alone. Draw the
characteristics ‘T’ Vs ‘S’ of induction motor at varying voltage & varying frequency individually & explain
its drawbacks.
b) With voltage/frequency= constant system of speed control of AC motors, explain the advantages and how it
can remove the drawbacks at (a) above.
13. a) Explain with winding diagram, how the speed of AC drive control can be made by pole changing method
in steps.
b) Explain with the torque speed characteristics diagram for pole changing control drive when motor is changing
from high speed to low speed it goes to regeneration braking region before it comes to forward motoring drives.
c) Explain with T-S characteristics of slipring induction motor for low rotor resistance, high rotor resistance
with constant torque, variable torque of fan type ( T α N2). Explain that range of speed control is limited for
low rotor resistance motor and how speed control can be improved by double squirrel cage induction motor
of high rotor resistance or other suitable suggestion you know.
