Experiment 7

A Simple Charles’ Law

Experiment
CHARLES’ LAW
 Jacques Charles
 Charles’ law states that at constant
pressure, the volume occupied by a
definite mass of gas is directly
proportional to its absolute
temperature.

 V= kT

 Where V is the volume, k is the

constant pressure, and T is the absolute
temperature (temp. In Kelvin)
CHARLES’ LAW
 It is used to calculate for the change in
volume that occurred as the
temperature of the confined gas
changes or vice versa. In this case,
we use :
 V1 V2
 T1 T2

Objective
 Todemonstrate the relationship of the
volume (V) of a gas and its
temperature (T)

Materials and Apparatus
 30 ml syringe
 1 L beaker
 Thermometer
 Heating plate
 Iron stand and clamp holder
 Ice
Procedure
 Remove plunger from a 10ml syringe
and seal the end with epoxy or glue.
 Apply baby oil on the rubber surface of
the plunger
 Insert the plunger with a tiny piece of
wire at the side to allow air to pass.
 Stop once the air inside the syringe is
about 5ml.

Procedure
 Push or pull the plunger and allow to
spring back. It must spring back to
the 3 or 5 ml mark.
 Place the syringe in a 250ml water bath
holding it firmly with a clamp.
 Immerse the thermometer where it
does not touch the surface of the
beaker.
 Measure and record the equilibrium
temperature and the volume

Volume vs. Temperature

VOLUME (ml)
Question
 Didthe experiment prove the validity
of Charles’ Law? Explain.

 According to Charles’ law, the

volume of a confined gas at constant
pressure increases with temperature.
The results of our experiment had the
same trend with what the law states
therefore proving its validity.
Conclusion
 After the experiment, we were able to
observe the relationship of the volume and
temperature of a confined gas under
constant pressure. We have proven Charles’
law that the volume is directly proportional
to the temperature. We might have had
errors in our temperature readings or volume
readings. Errors in temperature readings
might be caused by the unequal distribution
of the heat throughout the system. It is ideal
to use a stirring capsule to ensure constant
temperature of the system.
