SIGNS

The following chart shows the twelve signs of the zodiac and their

rulers. It is not at random that the planets have been assigned rulership.

The luminaries Moon and Sun rule the signs Cancer and Leo. The signs

nearest to them are ruled by Mercury, which is the nearest planet to the

Sun. The next orbit is that of Venus, which rules Taurus and Libra.

We being on the earth, it is omitted and the next orbit that of Mars,

ruler of Aries and Scorpio. Jupiter rules the next two signs. Aquarius and

Capricorn are ruled by Saturn which has the last orbit. The nodes Rahu

(the Dragon's Head) and Kethu (the Dragon's Tail) are not solid bodies

like other planets, but shadows (ancient vedic astrology did not

recognize the nodes). The following shows some of the domains of

the various planets. It is to be noted that slower mov ing planets are

farther from the Sun. Thus the order of the signs is the same as the

speed order of the planets.

The Sun is the king and the Moon is the queen. Their heir is sent to

Mercury, who offers him good education; then he is entrusted to Venus

from whom he learns the fine arts. Various techniques of warfare are

taught to him by Mars. Jupiter, the "guru", teaches him the "Vedas" and

mantras and prepares him for life. With the blessings of the 'Guru', he

faces Saturn, undergoes lot of sufferings and finally attains "Moksha"

(liberation).
