10B11PH111 (PHYSICS – I, 2010-11), Tutorial Sheet – 8

1. With the help of QWP and analyzer, how will you distinguish between unpolarized light and
circularly polarized light?
2. Find out the state of polarization when the X and Y components of the electric field are:
(a) E x = E 0 Sin(ωt + kz ), E y = E 0 Cos (ωt + kz )
1
(b) E x = E 0 Cos (kz − ωt + π / 4), Ey = E 0 Sin(kz − ωt )
2
3. How may a plate cut from uniaxial doubly refracting crystal be used to convert plane polarized
light into circularly polarized light? Also calculate the thickness of such a plate made from calcite,
for which the principal refractive indices are μ 0 = 1.658 and μ e = 1.486 at the wavelength 5890
Å.
4. A transparent plate is given. Using two Nicol prisms, how would you find whether the given plate
is QWP, HWP or simple glass plate?
5. A sugar solution is tube of length 20 cm produces optical rotation of 13o. The solution is then
diluted to one third of its previous concentration. Find optical rotation produced by 30 cm long
tube containing the diluted solution.
