Subject: Major social problems

Purpose
This is a proposal compiled to assess the impact of the seminar held to discuss social
problems. The opinions below reflect the ways in which some of these problems could be
addressed.

Crime
By far the most controversial issue is the crime rate in modern times. Crimes such as
vehicle theft, driving offences or social disturbance are the most frequent nowadays.
Also, it was added that in most of these cases, the offenders are teenagers, so we
concluded that one way to prevent such crimes is by severe punishments, combined with
stricter policing. The subject can be slowly introduced into schools environment with
help from the principals. We already started to put suggestive banners throughout the city
and I realize only now it has a great impact on our youth.

Homelessness
In the debate it was put forward the suggestion that homelessness was a matter of choice.
Even though it led to a lively exchange with several participants voicing their strong
disagreement, we reached a sad conclusion: one becomes pityingly only if ha has low
self-esteem. People do not follow retraining schemes and, as a consequence, it becomes
very difficult for them to find a job. They soon realize they are broke and the loss of their
property is the following step. The poor quality of life makes one disappointed and
anything but self-confident. Losing your way depends on your will. For this matter we
suggested counseling, and more focus on the individual on a local level.

Conclusion
The overall response to the event was encouraging. According with the majority of
people I spoke to, the seminar can be considered a great success. I have no doubt,
therefore, that plans should go ahead to organize meetings with the public.
