WHY IS NITROGEN IMPORTANT?

– IS NEEDED TO CREATE AMINO ACIDS

– AMINO ACIDS CREATE PROTEINS

– IN GAS FORM (N2) MAKES 78% OF OUR

ATMOSPHERE

– IS A MAJOR CONSTITUENT OF PLANT

FERTILIZERS
N2 in Atmosphere

Reused by

***KEY POINTS IN***
***THE NITROGEN***
***CYCLE***
 NH3 IN THE GROUND IS
RELEASED BACK IN TO
ATMOSPHERE AS N2 WHEN
SOIL BACTERIA CONVERT
THESE NITRATES TO GAS
(DENITRIFICATION)

NITROGEN IS PUT BACK IN

THE GROUND WHEN ANIMALS
DIE, OR EXCRETE (IN WASTE)

NOT DEPICTED, N2 IN THE

ATMOSPHERE CAN ALSO BE
RELEASED INTO THE GROUND
THROUGH ATMOSPHERIC
NITROGEN FIXATION
(LIGHTNING STORM)

Water Cycle

What is the Importance of the Water Cycle:

• Humans are about 75% water so they use water

many times a day
• The Water on Earth has been the same water
for millions of years and the water cycle filters
the water and make it safe for drinking
• Almost everything we touch has water in it or
has used water
• It can be in liquid, gas, or solid form

The Carbon/Oxygen Cycle
Importance:
•The Carbon and Oxygen cycle provides energy
and materials that create the basic building
blocks of life
•Combined with nitrogen and hydrogen, the
combination form bimolecular which are
carbohydrates, protein and lipids
•Carbon is contained in all living things through
bimolecular and oxygen is a necessity for life
•Oxygen makes up 21% of the atmosphere
