P = Pitch (mm)
Cc = Centre distance (mm)
Pt = Tangential tension (N)
Pc = Centrifugal tension (N)
Pz = Sagging tension (N)
Q = Braking load (N)
P = Power (W)
Z1 = Number of teeth of the pinion sprocket
Z2 = Number of teeth of the wheel sprocket
K1 = Load factor
K2 = Lubrication factor
K3 = Rating factor
[n] = Actual factor of safety
N = Allowable factor of safety
V = Chain velocity (m/s)
N = The running speed (rpm)
N1 = Speed of rotation of pinion (rpm)
N2 = Speed of rotation of wheel (rpm)
Diameter of wheel
=600mm
Perimeter = 2πR

Rpm of wheel@40km/hr
=Reqd speed/perimeter of wheel
=40*10^6/(1884.955*60)
=353.677rpm
Torque required:
Torque output on IC engine crank shaft
=0.75kgf
Primary reduction on IC engine
=1:7
Therefore torque
= 7*0.75
=5.25kgf
Avg gear box ratio
= 1:2
Final torque = 5.25*2
= 10.5kgf

MOTOR SIDE
Analysis of simple chain
N1=2000rpm
N2=750rpm
Transmission ratio Z2/Z1=N1/N2
=2000/750
=2.66
Minimum number of teeth on pinion, Z1=9
(page286, table 14.37)
Z2=2.66*Z1
=2.66*9
=23.94~24
We have, pitch P=10*[60.67/N1]^2/3
P=14.9mm
We have to select 10B simple chain (P 286, T 14.40a)
Pitch = 15.875mm
Roller diameter maximum = 10.16mm
Width between inner plates = 9.65mm
Bearing area = 0.81cm2
Weight/meter of chain = 8N
Braking load=22070N

Centre distance
Minimum centre distance for the transmission ratio,
Cmin =a+(30 to 50)
a=(d1+d2)/2
Cmin = (45+100)/2+50
=122.5mm
Optimum centre distance= Cp*P (P 248, E 15.56)
=30*15.875
=476.25mm
The selected centre distance =425mm

Length Of The Chain

The length of the chain in pitches,
Lp=2*cp+.5(Z1=Z2) +.026(Z1+Z2)^2/Cp (P248, E 15.57b)
=2*30+.5*(9+24) +.026(9+24)^2/30
=77.44
The length of the chain,
L=Lp*p (P248, E 15.58)
=77.44*15.875
=1229.36mm
~1230mm

POWER TRANSMITTED ON THE BASIS OF

BRAKING LOAD
P=Q*v/(n*Kz)
The chain velocity,
V=p*Z*N/(1000*60)
=15.875*9*2000/(1000*60)
=4.76m/s
The service factor,
Kz=K1*K2*K3
=1.25*1*1.5
=1.875
The allowable factor of safety,
N=20
P=22070*4.76/(20*1.875)
=2826.8W
Power to be transmitted=550W
Thus the design is safe
