Pre-Grad Communications Skills

Date: November 24, 2009


Twelfth week, Tuesday
Level: Graduate
Objectives: Students will be able to:
Ø Differentiate between form, meaning, and use of different question types
Ø Identify types of questions and answers in authentic discourse and in writing
Ø Produce different types of question and answering in peer groups

Time Activities Materials Seating


10 minutes Transcript Discussion:
8:55 – 9:05 • Ask students about the transcripts that they prepared: did they find any None Whole Class
new language? How were questions asked? Answered? Evaded?
25 minutes Asking & Answering Questions:
9:05 – 9:30 • Give students “Asking and Answering Questions” handout.
• Review each type: sentence structure, vocabulary, pragmatics. A&AQ
Whole Class
• Watch YouTube videos. Ask what types of questions/answers are used in handout
each video. (Organic Foods 215, 508, MSNBC, Palin = interruption, Miss
Teen = clarity, Bush = listen - look)
35 minutes Transcript Analysis:
9:30 – 10:05 • Students should get into pairs (one group of 3).
• In each pair, they should go over each transcript. They should compare the
transcript with the “Asking and Answering Questions” handout to find None Pairs
examples of question and answer types.
• Each pair should share their findings with the rest of the class.

10 minutes
10:05 – 10:15
45 minutes NPR Q&A Practice:
10:15 – 11:00 • Have SS form groups of 3-4.
• In each group, SS should take turns presenting to the class the show that
Question
they listened to on NPR. While presenting, other SS in the group should fill Small Groups
Form
out the “question form.” After each S has finished presenting, each other S
in their group should ask them at least two questions. All SS should refer
back to the Q&A Handout for vocabulary and structure types.
Closing Closing:
10 minutes • Give out Q&A presentation assignment. Ss must have an outline for Homework n/a
11:05 – 11:10 Tuesday.
