What are OSHA Incident Rates?

OSHA incident rates are an indication of how many incidents have occurred. The four rates typically used
OSHA Safety Metrics

are OSHA TRIR Rate, OSHA DAWC Rate, OSHA DART Rate, and OSHA Day Count Rate.
OSHA Recordable Injuries and Illnesses -
include all work related deaths, illnesses, and injuries which result in a loss of consciousness, restriction
of work or motion, permanent transfer to another job within the company, or that require some type of
medical treatment other than first-aid treatment (as defined by OSHA).
OSHA Recordable Rate (TRIR)
The Total OSHA Recordable Rate (sometimes referred to as Total Recordable Incident Rate) using the
number of OSHA Recordable injuries and illnesses cases. It is the number of OSHA incidents multiplied
by 200,000 and then divided by the number of hours worked.

(# of OSHA Recordable Cases x 200,000)

OSHA Recordable Rate (TRIR) =
Total # of hours worked

OSHA Days Away From Work Cases Rate (DAWC)

Days Away From Work Cases (DAWC) are occupational injury or illness cases which results in an em-
ployee being unable to work a full assigned work shift. That is, the employee is off from work (lost work-
day). As defined by OSHA, a fatality is not considered a lost time case. The day of the injury is not includ-
ed in the count. This is strictly a measure of “serious” cases broken out for comparison, any DAWC is also
part of the TRIR.

(# of OSHA Lost Time Cases x 200,000)

OSHA DAWC Rate =
Total # of hours worked

OSHA DART Rate

Days Away From Work Cases (DAWC) and Restricted Cases includes any Days Away from Work Cases
plus Restricted Cases. Restricted cases are defined as any occupational injury or illness that results in a
limitation in their job (i.e., no lifting, climbing, etc.) or transferred to another job (restricted days).
(# of OSHA DAWC + # of OSHA Restricted Cases) x 200,000)
OSHA DART Rate =
Total # of hours worked

Example:
A company experiences 6 OSHA recordable cases during the year. Three cases are OSHA recordable
and two are Lost Time cases involving 14 lost workdays and 25 restricted days. There also is one restrict-
ed case with 10 days of restricted duty (no lost work days). The employees worked 622,300 hours for the
year. For this example the rates would be:

OSHA Record- (6 x 200,000)

= 1.93
able Rate = 622,300 (2 x 200,000)
OSHA DAWC
= 0.64
Rate = 622,300
OSHA DART (3 x 200,000)
= 0.96
Rate = 622,300
