OF
THE CITY OF NEW YORK
Tom Glocer
Chief Executive Officer
Thompson Reuters
3 Times Square
New York, NY 10036
We are writing you to express our concern over Thomson Reuters’ treatment of its U.S.-
based journalists and other employees, who are represented by the Newspaper Guild of
New York.
It is our understanding that Thomson Reuters’ is the subject of a federal inquiry and that
the National Labor Relations Board will be issuing complaints against the company. We
are deeply troubled by Thomson Reuters’ apparent attempt to break the union
representing more than 420 of its employees and its treatment of union members. In
addition to possibly violating federal labor law, your company has resorted to the rarely
used aggressive tactics of halting the collection of union dues and refusing to arbitrate
disputes. At the same time, it has dramatically cut employees’ compensation and more
than doubled their healthcare costs.
These actions are an affront to the generous support given to Thomson Reuters by New
York City taxpayers through an agreement with the New York City Industrial
Development Agency (NYCIDA) last year. Your company’s treatment of its unionized
employees contradicts the intent of the NYCIDA agreement, which is to spur economic
growth and to create local jobs. Thomson Reuters has chosen instead to degrade the pay
and benefits of its key employees in the information and media sectors.
Therefore, please know that we are closely monitoring this situation and are concerned
about the negative impact your company’s labor relations may have on this vital sector of
the New York City economy.
We are eager to understand more and to hear from you and your representatives.
Sincerely,
City Council Member Brad Lander City Council Member Karen Koslowitz
