MY SETTING

02: I’M TRYING MY BEST

Your ministry—as highly valued as it is to us—is not the only thing our church does.
We are involved in many different types of ministries in the community and the world.
Just because I cannot support your ministry, it doesn’t mean I do not have a heart for
missions or the lost.
While it is good and natural for you to be passionate about your unique ministry, it is also helpful to remember
that the local church is pulled in many directions. To treat the rest of the “ministry” of the local church in a sec-
ond-class way is not only unhealthy, but unbiblical. Remember that the church is called in many directions (i.e.,
“in Jerusalem, in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.”). A discerning, humble perspective of how
and where you “fit” in the larger “glocal” (global and local) ministry of the church is not only wise and gracious,
but collaborative in spirit, invigorating and envisioning!

OVERHEARD FROM PASTORS…

“I have probably received 25-50 other requests for offerings for various ministries in the past 30 days.”

“When a church has many missionary guests, only a few can be scheduled to preach. Cordially accepting a spotlight rather than insisting on
preaching is helpful.”

“Our last visiting missionary touched so many hearts and needs in our congregation—including mine. It’s incredible to think that a sovereign God
sent that missionary to minister to us!”

“Not only is it good for pastors to feel the heartbeat of missionaries and identify with their struggles; it is good for missionaries to identify with the
struggles of the pastor.”
