THE TENTH HOUSE

This article is prepared in three parts. First part contains basic principles for predictions. Though these
principles are specifically elaborated and explained keeping in view the 10th house, but these principles
can be applied on similar lines to other houses after suitable modifications. Second part contains method
of application of these principles along with Karkatwa of planets and also Yogas for some important
professions. Third part contains Examples.
PART ‘A’ - Principles Of Predictions

The Tenth House represents mid-heaven and plays an important role in the chart, second in importance
only to the ascendant. This house is known as 'Karma Bhava' (house of action). The main signification of
this house is status, Profession and Career. This is most power full angular and also Upachaya house.

In actual practice the longitudes of only two Houses, the ascendant and the 10th House can be accurately
calculated. The cusps/mid-points of the other houses are derived from these two points. All the savants of
astrology are well aware of the various theories and controversies with regard to the determination of the
cusps/mid-points of all other houses derived from these two co-ordinates. This in itself shows the
importance of the Ascendant and the 10th house. House division is not the subject matter of this article; I
propose to deal with this aspect in detail in separate article at some other occasion.

The tenth house deals with prosperity and growth (significator - Jupiter), Karma (action) including all
works and actions (significator - Saturn), profession and career (significator - Mercury) and status and
fame (significator - Sun).

All planets in the 10th house give good results, because it is one of the Upachaya house besides being the
most powerful Kendra. Even Rahu in the 10th house gives pilgrimage, or political status and the native
gets an opportunity to serve others. This also happens when Rahu is in the 10th house from the Narayan
(Padakrama) Dasa sign (See Jaimini Sutra 2.4.7, 2.4.8, 2.4.9 and 2.4.10). The Sun and Mars, who get
directional strength in the 10th house, can be a great blessing by providing dynamism and success. The
Sun indicates pride, respect, position, status, responsibility, independent views and help from political and
senior officers. The Moon shows fluctuations of fortune and success in public dealings, emotional views
and a changeable work situation. Saturn indicates rapid rise and fall and hard work. If Rahu or Saturn is
placed in Cancer in the ascendant or in the 10th house ; or if Jupiter is placed in Pisces in a similar
situation, Chhatra-Yoga is formed. Indira Gandhi, Sonia Gandhi and Atal Bihari Vajpayee are all natives
with this Yoga in their charts. Ketu in the 10th indicates a routine job.

In case the ascendant and 10th house are weak and also have low Ashtakavarga strength, the whole chart
gets considerably weakened.

PLANETS PLACED IN 10TH HOUSE

Whenever any planet(s) occupy or aspect the 10th House, they influence the profession to a great extent.
There could be three situations:

(i)10th house is not occupied by a planet


(ii) 10th house is occupied by a planet
(iii) 10th house is occupied by more than one planet.

·In the First Case: The strongest planet between the lord of the 10th house and the lord of the Navamsa
occupied by the 10th lord generally indicates the nature of the profession.
·In the Second Case: the strongest planet amongst (1) the lord of the 10th house, (2) the lord of the
Navamsa occupied by the 10th lord, and (3) the planet placed in the 10th house will become the primary
determinant in indicating profession.
·In the Third Case: The strongest planet amongst (1) the lord of the 10th House, (2) the lord of the
Navamsa occupied by the 10th lord and (3) the most powerful planet occupying the 10th house will
become the primary determinant of profession and career.

Important Note

(a)The Navamsa chart indicates skills and the nature of profession whereas the Dasamsa chart indicates
success and failure in the profession. If a planet, which is identified as the strongest determinant of
profession in a nativity, is placed in the 6th, 8th or 12th house in the Sign (natal) chart, or this planet is
the lord of these houses; it will not provide a stable professional career. Similarly, this planet if placed in
the 3rd, 6th, 8th or 12th houses of the Dasamsa chart will indicate difficulties or breach in profession.

(b) If the planet, which is selected as the primary determinant of profession, is in close conjunction with
another planet, or has Sambandha with other planet, this second planet will also have a prominent say in
deciding the profession.

Varaha Mihira has given important clues in Chapter 10 of Brahat Jataka, ‘Karmajeeva’, with regard to the
sources of income through profession and laid emphasis on four sets of planets:

(1)Planets placed in the 10th house from the Ascendant and the Moon (the emphasis is not put on Sun).
(2)The lords of the Navamsa signs occupied by the 10th lords from the Ascendant, Moon and Sun. These
planets also control/affect the income during their transits. (In this group Sun as ascendant is Included).
These planets indicate skills and if strong in Navamsa chart help the native to achieve fame (according to
“Saravali”).
(3)The placement of the lords of the 10th house from the Ascendant and the Moon in different houses and
signs.(Refer chapter 30 and 33 of ‘SARAVALI’)
(4)The placement of auspicious and powerful planets in the Ascendant, 2nd and 11th houses.
1.Planets placed in the 10th house from the Ascendant and the Moon

The natural significations of these planets indicate the material resources and the human help available to
the native in his efforts to obtain a gainful profession and status. For example:

(a)If the Sun and Mercury are placed in the 10th house, the native may start business/trade with the
helpof his father or Government officials’, or he may get a Government job with the help of his friends and
maternal uncle.
(b)Mr. P.V. Narasimha Rao has Mars, Sun and Mercury in the 10th house (Virgo Ascendant). He became
Prime Minister of India at the commencement of the Mars major period with the help of a friendly political
establishment (represented by Sun and Mercury). The above three planets and Jupiter are aspecting the
10th house (Sagittarius) from the Moon (placed in Pisces).
It may be noted, though the strength of the Ascendant and the Moon is a vital factor, but strength or
weakness of the planets placed in the 10th house is of prime importance in augmenting resources for
gainful employment. This is the reason that Varaha Mihira, in Sloka I of Chapter 10, suggests considering
the planets placed in the 10th house from the Ascendant and the Moon without putting emphasis on the
strength of Ascendant and Moon.

2. The lord of the Navamsa sign occupied by the 10th lord from the Ascendant, Moon and Sun

The Navamsa chart (D-9) basically indicates Dharma (capabilities and skills of the native) that manifest
with the co-operation and association of life or business partners (seen in D-9), and co-workers, helpers,
bosses etc. (seen in the D-10) for gainful profession. Some broad hints are given below to judge
professional skills from the Navamsa chart:

(a)The lord of the Navamsa occupied by the 10th lord from the Ascendant, Moon and Sun indicate the
professional inclinations, capabilities and skills of the native. The strength of this planet in the birth,
Navamsa and Dasamsa charts indicate the specific inclination of professional activity, which helps in
pursuing any gainful employment.
(b)The planets placed in trine to the Navamsa Lagna and the LORD of Navamsa Lagna in the Navamsa
chart indicate the skills which the native will strive to acquire to meet his professional obligations.
(c)The planets in trine to the Atmakarka in the Navamsa chart basically indicate the desire of the native to
pursue a particular profession.
(d)The placement of the Atmakarka in the Navamsa chart is of prime importance:

(i)If the Atmakarka is in a trine to the Navamsa Lagna, it brings harmony and helps the native to pursue
his skills in line with his desire. There is no inner conflict.
(ii)If the Atmakarka is in an angle (Kendra) to the Navamsa Lagna, the native tries and strives to bring
harmony in his/her professional outlook.
(iii)If the Atmakarka is in an Upchaya house from the Navamsa Lagna, it is an indication of prosperity
through professional skills. In case the Atmakarka is a malefic planet (Mars, Saturn, Rahu or Sun) and
placed in the 3rd and 6th houses in the Navamsa chart, it will give beneficial results. (We consider 8 char
Karakas including Rahu).
(iv)The Atmakarka placed in the 2nd house gives moderate results.
(v)The Atmakarka, if placed in the 8th or the 12th house from the Navamsa Lagna, hinders the growth in
acquiring skills, on account of inner conflicts.

The Chapter 34 ‘Karkamsha Phal’ of ‘Brihat Parashar Hora Shastra’ and Chapter 2 of ‘Jamini Upadesha
Sutras give important guidelines in this regard.

3. The placement of the lord of the 10th house from the Ascendant and the Moon in various houses

The 10th lord indicates the source of income according to its own significations (both natural and
acquired) , and that of house / sign in which it is placed. The effect of placement of the 10th lord in
various houses is discussed in this article in brief for general guidance. The main guiding features are
given below:

(a)The sign influences the planet in many ways. Firstly: on account of its ownership of other houses;
Secondly: on account of the planets placed in the signs and Nakshatras of the 10th lord; Thirdly: the 10th
lord is influenced by the significations of the house and sign in which it is placed; Fourthly: the depositor
of the 10th lord also significantly influences the final assessment of the source of income.

(b)The Avastha of the 10th lord has a significant say on the nature of earning. Jatak Parijat in Chapter 2,
Sloka 16, 17 and 18, has indicated 10 avasthas like Deepta, Pramudit etc. The main guiding principles are
given below:

(i)10th lord in its exaltation sign: The native will earn money and his livelihood according to the nature of
the exalted planet. For example;
· Sun: with self-esteem, velour and dignified behavior, royal or official favors; Moon: with a graceful and
splendorous attitude; Mars: with courage, by eliminating competition, with a fighting spirit; Mercury: by
self-learning, intelligence and business acumen; Jupiter: on account of knowledge, wisdom and growth
oriented behavior, by creating a happy and comfortable atmosphere around the workplace; Saturn: by
foresight and hard work.

(ii) 10th lord in Mooltrikona or its own sign: There will be perfect harmony between the significations of
the house, sign and planet. The native will earn money by making full use of his own skills.

(iii)When the planet is in a friendly sign: The native will earn money with the help of his friends. His
livelihood will depend more on the significations of the sign and the house in which the planet is placed.
The significations of the planet itself will play a secondary role.e.g. If Mars placed in friendly house the
help may come from younger co-born.

(iv) When the planet is in an inimical sign: The significations of the sign will again play an important role,
but the native’s livelihood will depend on enmity, disputes and discord in professional life. Parasara has
given inimical signs for each planet: Sun-Ta, Ge, Li, Cap and Aq; Moon-Li, Sc and Aq; Mars – Ge, Vi, Li,
Aq and Pi; Mercury – Can, Sc, Aq and Pi; Jupiter Ta, Ge, Vi and Li; Venus – Can, Le, Sc and Sag; Saturn –
Ar, Can, Leo, Sc and Sag.

(v)When the 10th lord is in the sign of its debilitation: The significations of the planet will be the cause of
the downfall of the native e.g. if Venus is in debility, the wife, a woman or the skills indicated by Venus
will be the cause of losses in the profession.
The general results of the placement of the 10th lord in various houses are given separately in this article
for guidance.

4. Role of planets placed in the Ascendant, 2nd house and 11th house
Benefic or powerful planets placed in these houses help the native to earn money through professional
acumen. Benefic(s) in the 11th house and the Ascendant provide benefic Argala on the 10th house. The
2nd house represents finance and is the Poorva punya of the 10th house. This is the reason that Varaha
Mihira has put added emphasis on the benefic and auspicious influence on these houses in the birth chart
for gainful profession (Jeevaka).

ARGALA PRINCIPLE

The main Argala houses are the 2nd, 4th and 11th. The 5th house provides secondary Argala where as a
malefic placed in the 3rd house also provides benefic Argala. The 10th house has Argala on the 6th, 7th,
9th and 12th houses, thereby directly affecting enemies and servants (6th), business and trade (7th),
fortune (9th) and sleep (12th), as well as all other matters signified by these houses. A favorable
influence in the 6th house gives faithful servants and brings downfall to enemies. A good influence in the
7th house, brings success in business, provides a good business partner and a good wife. A good influence
in the 9th house gives a good boss, guru, parents and luck. All these good influences automatically affect
the status and profession ruled by the 10th house. If the Sun or Jupiter is in the 10th house, the Argala on
the 9th house is very favorable and will promote father, guru and good fortune. This will, simultaneously,
destroys the evil effects of malefic planets in the 9th house. Saturn/Rahu in the 10th house will have an
adverse affect on the 9th house. However, Saturn will have Shubh Argala on the 12th house of which it is
a significator and the native could learn spiritual practices. Ketu in the 10th house will harm the 9th house
but will help the native in achieving Moksha (Ketu being Mokshakaraka as well providing Argala on the
12th house). Mercury or Venus in the 10th house may be a blessing for business. However, Ketu or/and
Mercury in the 10th house will make the native fickle-minded. Ketu in the 10th house will be adverse to
pet animals (a signification of the 6th house), but Saturn in a similar position will increase enemies, as
Saturn is the significator of enemies.

The second basis of Argala consideration is those houses, which have Argala on the 10th house and on the
planets placed in the 10th house. The ascendant has Sukh Argala on the 10th house. If the planet in the
ascendant is friendly to the planet in the 10th house, then the native has job satisfaction and if inimical,
there will be a lot of dissatisfaction. The 11th house has Dhan Argala on the 10th house. If Rahu is in the
11th house, the results of one’s actions will come suddenly while Saturn will delay the fruits. A retrograde
planet in the 11th house in transit can even deny the fruits of action until it becomes direct in transit. The
8th house has Labh Argala on the 10th house. Thus it determines the end of work or career after awarding
the requisite fruits of his labor.

Similarly, the influence created by planets placed in houses, which provide Vipreet Argala, should also be
considered before arriving at a final assessment. Vipreet Argala counteracts the good or bad influences
generated by Argala producing planets and houses. This is a very important consideration and a tool,
which should not be ignored, in the final analysis of any nativity.

BADHAKA PLACES (HOUSES OF OBSTRUCTION)

Badhaka places play important role in predictive astrology. Chapter 12 and 15 of “Prashna Marg” deal this
subject in comprehensive manner. The broad indication are given below:

The badhaka place is 11th sign for all moveable signs from them, 9th sign for all fixed signs and 7th sign
for all dual signs respectively.

The adverse effect, generated by badhaka places, is removed by badhaka place from them (like in vipreet
yogas). Thus badhaka removing place is 7th sign for moveable and fixed signs. And dual sign itself
removes it’s own badha .For example, if sign Aries is in consideration ,badha sign will be Aquarius and
badha removing sign will be Libra. Similarly, badha sign is Capricorn and badha-removing sign is Scorpio
for TAURAS, and badha sign is Sagittarius and badha-removing sign is Gemini itself for GEMINI SIGN.

The following rules are to be kept in view while applying BADHA principle:
(a)The badhaka and badha removing places are considered from each house separately.
(b)These principles are also applied to a sign whose dasa is operating.
(c)If dasa of a planet is Operating, Badha will be considered from the sign occupied by planet.
(d)Badhakesha planet placed in 12th house removes badhas, particularly if conjoined and/or aspected by
benefic(s). In cases where malefic, is conjunct with Badhakesha in 12th house, will give badha
intermittently.
(e)Parasara says, a sign gives bad results like tremendous distress, imprisonment, unwarranted
expenditure, disease etc:
(1) If Lord of dasa sign and badhaka place both are conjoined with malefic; the harm will be maximum.
(2) If these signs are owned or aspected by malefic (not conjoined), the harm will be comparatively less.
(3)Influence of benefic will ward off evil effects. Aspects of benefic are more effective than conjunction.
(4)If Badhakesha and Rahu conjoined together and placed in 6th and 8th houses, the dasa of such signs
(planets) give very adverse results.
In case all these factors will be under benefic influence, the bad effects will be reduced to a greater extent
(this is just reversed in case of malefic influence).

(5)Moveable signs has 11th house as their badhaka place. All malefic and benefic placed in 11th house will
give good results with some obstruction provide the Dasa sign (moveable) is occupied by Benefic.

I quote an example indicating the role of Badhaka Lord when placed in 12th house:

Birth Chart: Mr.P.V. Narasimha Rao - Asc-Virgo, Libra-Rahu, Pisces-Moon, Aries-Venus and Ketu, Gemini-
Mercury®, Mars and Sun, Leo-Jupiter and Saturn.

Mr. Rao became Prime Minister of India in Antardasa of Rahu in Mahadasa of Mars. We shall examine the
influence of Badhaka places and planets with reference to the sings occupied by Moon, Mars and Rahu
only:
Moon is placed in badhaka place (in PISCES in 7th house) and Badhakesha Jupiter is placed in 12th house.
His Moon Dasa was full of constraints and problems. Ultimately he decided to pack off from Delhi for good
as he was feeling left out in political atmosphere operating around him in Delhi. No doubt, he was holding
the charge of important Ministries during dasa of Moon, because badhaka Lord Jupiter is placed in 12th
house. Saturn conjoined with Jupiter was giving problems of intermittent nature.

When Mars dasa commenced, the Badhak Lord Jupiter both from the Ascendant and 10th house started
playing its role in full. Jupiter is placed in the 12th house from ascendant. Badha removing lord Mercury is
placed with Mars in 10th house. Three planets-Sun, Mercury and Mars- placed in 10th house are removing
badhas of all kinds.

Antar Dasa lord Rahu is place in Libra, a moveable sign. Badhak place is 11th house, which is occupied by
two planets- Jupiter and Saturn. Venus is occupying seventh house in sign Aries; this has helped in
removing badha. Rahu being placed in Libra and aspected by Venus, giving yoga results (See Laghu
Parasari Ch-4 Sloka 5).

Rahu has elevated him to become P.M. of India in mahadasa of Mars (12-06-1990 to 12-06-91) and
conferred on him highest order of RAJYOGA as Jupiter had removed all Badhas.

More examples will be discussed in 3rd part of the Article.

CONSIDERATION OF VARIOUS LAGNAS AS A REFERENCE POINT

Generally, all aspects of a nativity are judged with reference to three Lagnas, viz. the Ascendant, Moon
Lagna and Sun Lagna. However, two other reference points should not be ignored. These are the Lagna
Pada and the Paaka Lagna, which are direct reflections of the ascendant and as such play a very important
role in analyzing a nativity.

(1)Lagna (ascendant)

The Lagna is the most important reference point in a nativity. In fact, this is the fulcrum of any chart. This
shows the true self of the native. In the first place it indicates the ability, knowledge, intention and
persistence available to the native in any field of life. The Lagna indicates the potential and resolve
available to the native, which manifests or finds expression during the journey of life. The Lagna and
particular houses counted from it signify the physical body and its different parts.

(2)Chandra Lagna (Moon Lagna)

The Moon is the significator of the mind. Houses counted from the Moon are useful in looking at things
from the point of view of the native’s mind. The Moon Lagna indicates one's inclinations, ambitions,
happiness, views, liking for things around him and what he desires or is inclined to do. These are factors,
which generate initiative in the native to choose a particular career.

In case of the 10th house from the Moon is under the influence of Saturn, the native may be hardworking
and doing a routine job, but Mars in the 10th house from Moon will make him active and enterprising. In
the later case, he may not hesitate to move out from his native place to earn money, name and fame.

(3)Sun Lagna

The Sun Lagna indicates physical vitality. A strong 10th house from the Sun will give immense strength to
fight against all odds in spite of a weak physical body, structure or environment.

As the Sun is the significator of the soul, the inspiration to perform comes from within in spite of the odds
faced from within and outside.

(4) Pada Lagna or Lagna Pada

This is popularly known as the Arudh Lagna. Parasara and Jaimini have named it the Pada Lagna or Lagna
–Pada. A House/Sign has a Pada whereas plants have an Arudh. The word 'Arudh' has created a lot of
confusion. There are numerous methods for finding out house/sign Pada. We recommend following
method:

The method of finding house/sign Pada:

(i)Take the sign in the house of interest.


(ii)Find the sign occupied by the lord of that house. (Saturn and Rahu own Aquarius, Mars and Ketu own
Scorpio. The stronger lord between the two is considered.)
(iii)Count the number of signs from the house of interest to the sign containing its lord. Counting is always
in the zodiacal direction.
(iv)Count the same number of signs from the sign containing the lord to reach the final sign.
(vi)Exception: if the sign found in step (iv) is in the 1st or 7th house from the house in consideration, then
we take the 10th sign from that found in step (iv). Otherwise the final sign remains unchanged. In other
words, step (v) is taken only if the lord of the house under consideration falls in a Kendra (Angular)
position from it.

The resulting sign thus obtained is called the Pada of the original house, like Lagna Pada, Mantra Pada,
Dara Pada etc.

The Pada of a house can only fall in 3rd, 4th, 5th, 9th, 10th and 11th houses from it only.

The importance of the Lagna Pada should not be underestimated. This is Maya, illusion, on account of
which we are forced to perform certain activities. Whereas all the previous Lagnas are indicative of what a
native possesses and how he acts or performs in this world, the Lagna Pada indicates how a native is
perceived in the world. Thus, it shows the status of the native in the eyes of others.

A planet in the 10th house from Lagna may give some important development, such as change in
profession (e.g. Mercury may help in developing one’s own business). A planet in the 10th house from
Chandra Lagna may indicate some important activity say from administrative job to marketing activity. A
planet in the 10th house from Lagna Pada may indicate some important development in one's professional
status.

(5)Paaka Lagna

Paaka Lagna is the sign where the Lagna Lord is placed. Similarly, every house has its Paaka Sthana. The
importance of the Lagna Lord and its placement is well known to savants of astrology.

The Lagna Lord represents the physical self of the native. Thus a house counted from the Paaka Lagna
throws light on matters related to the physical self i.e. how the native uses his potential at a given
moment or opportunity.

For example, Saturn’s transit over Lagna may obstruct or hamper one's activities, over Moon may create
frustration, over Paaka Lagna may create a feeling of sickness or lack of physical vitality.

The houses from Paaka Lagna provide the physical resources required to perform actions. For example,
the fifth house from Paaka Lagna will be indicative of memory, which alone helps the native to succeed in
examinations. A planet in the 10th house from Paaka Lagna indicates the resources which the native will
mobilise to fulfill his professional skills e.g. Jupiter will help to expand the skills with all the wisdom and
maturity at the native’s command while Saturn will help the native to put in a lot of hard labour and give
foresight to achieve his goal.

As a matter of fact savants are using all these Lagnas, but I have tried to show their importance and use
in Predictive Astrology.

The placement of Lords of other houses in the 10th house and the Lord of the 10th house in other houses
is very important. The results of these placements are given below in brief.

Effects of lords of different houses placed in the 10th house:

1st lord: Endowed with paternal happiness, enjoys royal favors and fame among people, has self-earned
income. This placement is very beneficial for Aries, Virgo, Pisces and Capricorn Lagnas. The above good
results will be strengthened because Lagna pada will fall in the 4th house.

2nd lord: Respected, learned, may join father's business or earn through service. In spite of being
libidinous and even after having more than one wife, he may be bereft of happiness from progeny. This
unfavorable situation arises as Dhan Pada goes to the 6th house.

3rd lord: All kinds of happiness, self-earned wealth, he is inclined to nurture wicked females (3rd lord
gives argala to 7th house), financial success if the sign is common. The above negative results are
indicated as the lord of the 3rd house also carries with it the effect of the 3rd house Karaka, Mars, and
Sahaj Pada falls in the 5th house.

4th lord: The lord of the 4th house is called Dharm Devta. If placed in the 10th house, the native is well
looked after in childhood (with some initial difficulties, if the lord is a malefic), enjoys royal honors, is an
alchemist, lucky, religious, respected and learned, will conquer his five senses. Subha Pada will fall in
Lagna.

5th lord: Blessed with Rajyoga and various pleasures in life and he will be very illustrious. Mantra Pada will
fall in the 3rd house, which is 11th from the 5th house. A kind of Vipreet Rajyoga is thus formed. This
combination gives a son who is famous and brings luster to the family.

6th lord: Gifted speaker, happy in foreign lands, litigation in parental property. (Shatru Pada will fall in the
2nd house, which is 11th from the 4th house. The lord of 6th is placed in the 2nd from the 9th house and
in the 7th from the 4th house). Such persons are not of much help to their parents.

7th lord: The seventh house represents marriage and partners in sex and business, besides having Maraka
qualities. If the 7th lord is placed in the 10th house, Dara Pada will also be placed in the 10th, carrying
with it the influence of its Karaka, Venus. This is a very important placement. The native will have a
beautiful wife who will promote his career and honor. The wife, however, will not remain under his control.
If the 7th lord is a malefic, the spouse will be of a nagging character and will try to dominate the native.
The native will be religious and be gifted with wealth and son.In case of Dual signs 7th lord becomes
badhaka also .
8th lord: Impediments in profession and business, resorts to fair and foul means. Mirtyu Pada will fall in
12th house.

9th lord: King or equal to a king will be a minister or an army chief, virtuous and dear to all. This
placement can generate the highest order of Rajyoga.Bhagya Pada will fall in 11th house and give argala
to 10th house.

10th lord: When the 10th lord is in the 10th house, the Karmapada will fall in the 7th house. The 10th lord
will give powerful Argala to its Pada as well as to the 9th house. The native will be skillful in all jobs, will
be valorous, truthful and devoted to his teachers and elders.

11th lord: In this case Labha pada will be in the 9th house, and will get Argala from the 11th lord itself.
According to the Bhavat Bhavam principle, the 9th house also acts as Labha Sthana where Labha Pada is
placed. This is a very auspicious situation for all types of gains, status as well as virtuous behavior. Such
natives will be honored by the king, be virtuous, devoted to religious principles, truthful and will have
control on his senses.

12th lord: This is not a good placement. Liability and disgrace with the possibility of prosecution or
discredit from superiors or government, moderate paternal bliss, hard-working and undertaking journeys
for his occupation, happiness from children is limited.

Similarly, the placement of the 10th lord in various houses is important. The indications in brief are given
below. It should be remembered that the 10th lord, as a Karaka of profession (by virtue of being lord of
the 10th house) also carries the effects of the fixed Karakas of the 10th house namely Sun, Jupiter,
Mercury and Saturn, to its house of placement.

Effects of the 10th lord placed in different houses:

·1st house: Scholarly, famous, poetic, wealth increases day by day, pursues independent business,
sickness and misery in childhood (Saturn), Rajyoga generally manifests after middle age. Karma Pada will
also be in the ascendant and will give Argala to the 10th house. Thus a benefic placement here will be
extremely helpful in profession.

·2nd house: Fortunate, engages in family trade and business and develops it. Rises well in life and earns
lot of money. If the 10th house is under malefic influence, the native suffers losses and may be
responsible for winding-up his paternal business. As Karma Pada falls in the 6th house, a benefic influence
will help to raise loans for business and give prosperity.

·3rd house: The native earns money from professions requiring constant travel and short journeys or the
execution of contracts on a time-bound basis. If the 10th lord is strong, the native may be a speaker,
writer or celebrity; his brothers may be instrumental in advancing his career. As Karma Pada falls in the
8th house, this position nullifies the effects of Rajyoga (Because Karma Paaka Lagna and Karma Pada are
placed in 6/8 position), if any is present in the nativity or at least delays its manifestation.

·4th house: This is a lucky position .The native engages in comfortable and easy professions, earns money
through agriculture, property, vehicles and other such pursuits. As Karma Pada falls in the 7th house, a
benefic placed in the 4th house nullifies any malefic influence in 10th house by providing Vipreet Argala.
This is a good placement for trade, commerce and business, particularly in real estate.

·5th house: The placement of most powerful Kendra lord in a trine generates a strong Rajyoga, provided
the 10th lord is conjoined or influenced by benefic’s. This Yoga is found in the horoscopes of wise
statesmen, scholars, professors, writers, actors etc. Karma Pada falls in the 12th house, and if this Pada is
in an angle/trine to Lagna Pada, the native will wield a lot of authority and power and his fame will reach
across all the five seas.

·6th house: This may be a ticklish or dangerous placement, but it makes the native skillful. If the 10th
lord and the 10th house are under benefic influence, the native holds a post of authority and will be held
in high esteem. If the same are under malefic influence, the native serves under an inconsiderate boss,
has professional and monetary instability, and is bereft of paternal bliss, troubled by enemies and lasting
diseases. The influence of Saturn creates low paying jobs with not much prospects. Rahu can bring
disgrace. This is an auspicious combination for doctors and criminal lawyers.

·7th house: Thus gives a mature wife who assists the native in his career. This is an excellent combination
for diplomats and for making profit through partnerships and joint ventures. A malefic influence makes the
native debased and he indulges in every kind of vice for getting good results. A benefic influence is a must
as Karma Pada falls in the ascendant. Benefic 10th lord in 7th house provide vipreet argala on planets
placed in ascendant thus mitigates evil effects on Karma house even if malefic planet placed in ascendant.
THIS IS A YOGA FOR OPENING OF NEW ECECUTIVE JOB IN TRADING HOUSE.

·8th house: Not an auspicious placement. The native avoids quarrels in his profession, is skillful, devoted
to elders and has breaks in career. If fortified, this placement causes Rajyoga and the native may occupy
high office for a short time. A malefic 10th lord may help in service, and a benefic may help in business
related professions.

·9th house: This is a very significant placement. When the 10th lord is in the 9th house, Karma Pada will
fall in the 8th house, which is 11th to the 10th house. This makes the native a spiritual stalwart. He will be
a beacon of light to spiritual seekers if Jupiter aspects the 10th lord. He will enjoy or have kingly status,
be wealthy, have happiness from progeny, do charitable deeds and sacrifices, follow a hereditary
profession or that of a preacher, teacher or healer.

·11th house: The native is endowed with happiness and sons, is virtuous, truthful and always delighted.
He will have many friends. If the 11th house is under malefic influence, his friends will turn enemies and
cause him every sort of hardship and worry.

·12th house: The native will spend money in royal courts and work in far-off places. He will also have fear
from enemies and will be worried in spite of being skillful. He will lack comforts and face many difficulties
in life. Malefic placement may help to rise in professional status on account of third house argala on 10th
house.

Note: Whenever the 10th lord falls in either the 6th, 8th or 12th house, the native mostly gets trouble
from the royal side. Similarly, if the 10th lord or planets placed in the 10th house, occupy the Navamsa of
signs placed in the 6th, 8th or 12th houses of Birth chart, the native’s profession is not stable and he
suffers reverses. The basic principles, which are given in Slokas 1to 12 Chapters 11 of “Jatak-Parijat’,
should always be applied for arriving on final assessment.

INFLUENCE OF OTHER HOUSES ON PROFESSION

Fifth and Third house: These houses represent the Birth and Death of a job. The 5th house is the 8th from
the 10th, representing birth (beginning) and longevity (time of implementation of an action) of the 10th
house. Thus, the 5th house rules the authority and power that one enjoys due to one’s skills and
knowledge as well as Purva Punya. The timing of joining a new or change in job is indicated from the 5th
house. Similarly, 3rd house indicate change in job or short time assignments.

Sixth and Seventh houses: The 6th house rules service and the 7th house rules business. If there are
more planets in the sixth house, or it is otherwise stronger, service is indicated. A stronger 7th house
gives a business enterprise. Similarly, the 6th lord promotes service while the 7th lord promotes business.
The dasa period of 7th lord may bring instability in service. A debilitated malefic in the 7th house or
malefic in the 8th house, will encourage service and damage business.

Eighth house: The 8th house, being the 11th from the 10th house, is the place of retirement or end of
career after reaping fruits of one’s efforts. The 8th house, if beneficially disposed, can give huge loans to
take up large enterprises and its Argala on the 7th and 10th houses can give a new boost to business. If ill
disposed, one’s business will run into endless debt and ruin.

SERVICE

The boss is seen from the 9th house while subordinates are seen from the 5th house. During the period of
a malefic planet having malefic Argala on the 9th house, one is tormented by boss, while benefics having
Subha Argala shall give a very good and helpful boss. In a chart showing potential for employment, the
concerned houses for self are the 1st, 6th and 10th. The 3rd house from these (the 3rd, 8th and 12th) can
cause problems. The 8th house will show retirement, the 3rd house shows short leave, while the 12th
house shows long leave.

BUSINESS

The ascendant lord in the 9th house makes a person very independent and business is best advised in
such charts or at least employment with a lot of scope for free enterprise. The 2nd house is the 8th from
the 7th house and shall play a crucial role in starting any business. Similarly, the starting of any business
is determined by the availability of finance. The quadrants to the 2nd house are the 5th, 8th and 11th
houses, indicating the money that is put in by the partner (5th house is 11th from the house of partner
i.e. 7th), loans from banks etc., and the self respectively.

UPACHAYA AND ARGALA PRINCIPLES

Maharishi Parasara and Jaimini have laid great emphasis on both Upachaya and Argala principles. The
proper synthesis of a nativity vis-a-vis material prospects can be understood only with the help of these
two excellent tools. I have tried to show the application of these principles in this article. These principles
should be applied extensively and without any reservation while judging any aspect of life and are also to
be applied in the Divisional and Harmonic charts.

I shall give one example. Let us take the case of the 10th house. The Upachaya Bhavas from the 10th
house are the 12th, 3rd, 7th and 8th. A debilitated Saturn in the 12th house will give professional success
in its Dasa, as the 12th house is 3rd from the 10th house. Similarly, a benefic placed in the 7th house will
help in profession. A malefic in the 8th house though gives problems to the 7th house; the native should
remain in service rather than pursue his own business.

VARGA(DIVISIONAL) AND HARMONIC CHARTS

The methods of assessment of Varga charts are well known and extensive hints are given in Jataka
Granthas. Sri Jagannath Centre has also recently released a book called 'Varga chakras’ ( Sagar
Publications New Delhi) for the benefit of savants of astrology.
All Varga charts introduced by Parashara are called Divisional Charts by English speaking people and are
indicated as D-1, D-4, D-5, D-9, D-10 etc in this article.
A harmonic chart is also a kind of Varga chart. However, all harmonic charts are constructed on the
principle of cyclic (parivrittiya) rotation. The count in a harmonic chart always starts from Aries. Therefore,
the first harmonic starts from Aries and follows the regular order from Aries to Pisces. The Harmonic
charts are indicated as H-4, H-5, H-7.H-9 etc in this article.
In harmonic charts, the exact longitude of the planet can easily be calculated and shown. The mutual
aspects (particularly house aspects) between the planets help to assess an event. The conjunction, sextile
(60 deg), square (90 deg), trine (120 deg), quincunx (150 deg) and opposition (180 deg) are very
important. The close aspects give very powerful results.
Chaturthamsa D-4 and H-4 are different charts altogether. Panchamsa D-5 and H-5 are different charts
and are used for different purposes. Saptamsa D-7 and Navamsa D-9 Varga charts and H-7 and H-9
harmonic charts are absolutely the same charts. However, when H-7 and H-9 charts are assessed by the
method given in this article, they provide very useful additional information on professional matters.
(Saravali says a strong planet in Navamsa chart makes the native renowned on account of his skills and in
Saptamsa chart makes him courageous, rich and also famous for his good deeds).
Like the Natal D-1 and Navamsa D-9 charts, the Panchamsa (H-5) and Dasamsa (D-10) charts are also to
be analyzed in detail independently. Rajyoga(s) have to be assessed in these charts carefully. Besides, the
Harmonic charts (H-4) and (H-7) also provide important clues regarding profession and should not be
ignored.
PANCHAMSA VARGA AND FIFTH HARMONIC CHARTS

First, we should examine the importance and role of the 5th house in promoting profession and career.
The 5th house is a significator of Poorva Punya as well as middle age and acts as a depository of the
knowledge and learning acquired from all source. The following are the main sources of gaining knowledge
and learning:

(i)The 5th house itself act as Dhee Shakti (retention power )of the native.
(ii)The 2nd house-- from observation and speech.
(iii)The 3rd house -- from hearing and information.
(iv)The 4th house-- from books and scriptures.
(v)The 9th house-- from Gurus, boss, elders.
(vi)The 10th house -- by actual work experience.
(vii)The 11th house-- by publishing articles on a specific subject.

In fact, all the knowledge, which is acquired with help of the above sources in the past or in the future, is
get accumulated in the 5th house from Lagna. This knowledge manifests in the form of memory from the
5th house from Paaka Lagna.

The main question arises whether the acquired knowledge will be fully utilized for the upliftment of the
professional life and prosperity or there will be a divergence, from the acquired education or training, in
professional field. Material prosperity depends on the Upachaya houses. The 7th, 10th, 2nd and 3rd
houses are the Upachaya places from the 5th house. If these houses are strong, occupied or influenced by
planets, and there is some malefic influence on the 7th and 10th houses, the native will mainly pursue his
studies keeping in mind some special profession and vocation. If the 7th or 10th houses have only benefic
influences, the native will neglect the profession of his training and study, and may pursue some other or
alternative profession(s). Similarly, if the 7th and 10th houses are occupied by malefic(s) with a strong
benefic influence, the native will first pursue a profession according to his vocational studies, but may
change it afterwards.

PANCHAMSA DIVISIONAL CHART (D-5)

This chart represents two aspects of the Universe namely – (1) Spirit or Energy or Atma – the spirituality
of the native, and (2) Material Nature – or Prakriti – the material aspect of the life.

The Panchamsa Divisional chart represents spirituality in the native, and his ability to separate these two
constituents (Spirit and Prakriti) of the Universe or within himself like the saints do.

Each Rashi is divided into 5 equal parts of 6° each. Planets in the 5 parts of an odd Signs go into Ar, Aq,
Sg, Ge and Li (respectively). Planets in the 5 parts of an even Signs go into Ta, Vi, Pi, Cp and Sc
(respectively).

This division indicates the capability of the native to distinguish between his spiritual and material life and
set his goals accordingly. (In Trimshamsa D-30, the planets play major role; where as in Panchamsa Rasi
is important. A planet in its own Trimshamsa will give good-qualities and happiness. A sign in benefic
influence in Panchamsa will indicate material prosperity along with spiritual strength)

Note : There is a different basis for judgement of Panchamsa and Trimshamsa Divisional Charts. Each
Panchamsa Division is guided by the sign and the role of planets becomes secondary. Whereas each
Trimshamsa Division is represented by a planet linked with any of the five elements (viz. Ether, Fire, Air,
Earth and Water). Trimshamsa indicate the involvement of the Jeeva with basic elements and then finally
subjected to misery. Planets act like seed for all miseries. Signs though represent material existence but
Jeeva does not feel part of the same. This is the basic difference in these two divisions. As a matter of
fact, both D-5 and D-30 charts are almost same, the difference being in the emphasis and basic approach.

On the other hand, Panchamsa harmonic chart (H-5) indicates natural inclination of the native in dealing
with and feeling at ease in acquiring skills for particular profession. I sincerely believe that Maharishi
Jaimini has referred this Chart in Sutra 3.1.29.

THE FIFTH HARMONIC (H-5)

In this Harmonic chart, each sign is divided into 5 equal parts of 6° each. The first 6° of Aries sign
commences from Aries and then follows the regular order from Aries to Pisces. The H-5 chart is very
useful in the overall analysis of career and profession.

In professional or material life, this chart indicates the capability and ideas of the native – in bringing
together the things/persons that exist or operate separately in nature into a formal relationship with one
another. Thus, this harmonic indicates the power of the native to assert his authority to bring a formal
order into all aspects of life, be it science, engineering, art, culture, organization or through any profession
or vocation for that matter.

In Panchamsa Harmonic Chart, each moveable sign starts from its own sign ( as in D-9 chart), fixed sign
starts from its fifth sign (in Navamsa Chart its starts from its Ninth sigh), Dual sign starts from its ninth
sigh (in Navamsa it starts from fifth sign). The signs move in regular successive order.Thus Panchamsa H-
5 and Navamsa D-9 charts act as complimentary to each other.

The H-5 chart indicates the concept of making, arranging, building, constructing or forming something
new, using the things available but existing separately in nature. This chart is most prominent and
powerful in scientists, mathematicians, engineers, painters (commercial), musicians (mainly
instrumental), actors etc. The H-5 chart helps to understand the capability of the native to deliberately
construct or create an order or style.

The conjunction of planets in good houses, provide the ability to succeed in a profession indicated by
those planets. Moon-Venus conjunction may indicate a brilliant musician, Mercury-Mars conjunction – a
design engineer, Mercury-Venus – an excellent computer software engineer, Mercury-Jupiter may favor
chartered accountancy, Venus-Mercury-Jupiter conjunction may indicate a C.A. who may also be an
excellent software originator.

If the planets are in trines to each other, the native finds pleasure and enjoyment in his work. An
opposition of planets indicates the desire of the native to create order in a structural way. Squares
indicate a good struggle and an effort towards finding an appropriate solution and goal.

The strength of the ascendant and the 5th house and their lords are the key factors when judging the D-5
and H-5 charts. Parasara and Jaimini have not given hint on the construction of these charts. This is an
open field for research.

With the help of the Panchamsa H-5 chart, the commencement of a particular profession can be judged.
The various Yogas in the D-5 chart should be properly assessed. Planets which are placed in the 11th
house from the Dasa Rashi, and are either in their debility or in their exaltation, help to accrue material
benefits. This is an important principle applicable to all charts.

DASAMSA DIVISIONAL CHART (D-10)

The Dasamsa chart should be analyzed in detail independently. This chart has a great say in the choice of
profession. The Dasamsa chart indicates success and failure, rise and fall in professional life. A strong
ascendant and 10th house and their lords indicate that the native will succeed in his profession. The 9th
house and its lord indicate growth in profession. The 2nd, 6th and 10th houses of the D-10 chart comprise
the Arth (finance) Trikona and, as such, these houses are very important to judge prosperity through
profession. A strong planet in the 10th or the 7th house is a boon as these houses are directly linked with
professional success.

The 3rd and 8th houses are death-like houses. A planet in the 8th house will give extreme difficulties in
the profession during its Dasa. Similarly planets in the 3rd house have the capacity to curtail or sever the
professional link, and may indicate change or retirement from job. Planets in their own signs, exaltation,
or under benefic influence, may reduce the difficulties and extreme conditions may not occur.

Narayan Dasa should be applied to H-5 and D-10 charts independently. The application of this Dasa on
Divisional charts can be learnt from the book ‘Narayana Dasa’ by Sanjay Rath, published by Sagar
Publications. This is the only book available in the market under this title and on this subject. The
Narayana Dasa charts out the professional life in an excellent manner. It may be remembered that the
Signs represent physical existence. As such all Sign Dasas are better indicators of the native’s physical
and material achievements, whereas the Nakshatra Dasas which depend basically on the Moon indicate
the satisfaction derived by the native on account of material gains.

THE FOURTH HARMONIC CHART (H-4)

This is not the Chaturthamsa divisional chart (D-4), which indicates residence, houses, properties and
fortune.

All moveable signs start from Aries, fixed from Leo and dual from Sagittarius. The signs follow successive
and regular order. The same principle of Division is followed in D-16 - Shodasamsa Chart. This chart can
also be called H-16. H-4 indicates hindrances in achieving success, whereas D-16 (or H-16) indicates
happiness derived from material success in life. Therefore H-4 is very important tool to know if a person
will succeed in his pursuance of a particular profession or vocation.

The fourth Harmonic chart, or H-4, indicates the goal, which the native is called upon to actively pursue.
The square aspects are most important and informative in H-4 charts as these provide additional
information, which is not readily available in the Natal (radical) chart.

The square aspects between the planets in Radical chart make the native aware that these forces are
pulling him in different directions and that he needs to bring them together for success in his profession.
These strong planets placed in a square aspect to each other, act as mutual Karakas and are able to lift
the native to great heights.

On the other hand, square, semi-square or quincunx aspects in the H-4 chart indicate that the native is
unable, finds it difficult or lacks the power to bring integration or harmony in the forces created by such
planets. The native may either have immense difficulties or may meet failure if he pursues professions
indicated by such planetary combinations. Two planets, opposite to each other in H-4 chart, will pull the
native in different directions, and the native has to bring them together in order to be successful in the
outside world.

If a T - aspect (i.e. planets square to each other in three different houses) is operating in the H-4 chart, it
creates great disharmony. The opposing planets are already pulling the native in different directions. The
third planet, in square with both of these, will put a hindrance in overcoming the disharmony that is being
created by the two opposing planets. If the overall personality of the native is weak, these square aspects
act as an excuse for inactivity, and the native adopts a defensive attitude in the face of hostile
atmosphere. The malefic in the T-aspect will not allow the native to succeed and as such the profession
indicated by these planets should not be adopted so that the native is at peace with him and may not
have to put forth efforts in vain.

These adverse aspects create a peculiar situation in the lives of most natives. The native will spend his life
battling against odds and struggling to prove that he can demonstrate qualities, which, in fact, are not
available to him. For example, the native may have limited resources but may spend lavishly to hide his
poverty. A weak H-4 chart kills the native’s initiative. This chart shows the direction in which native has to
strive to achieve success. This is indicated by the square aspects in the H-4 chart. The type of odds which
the native has to face can be assessed from the nature of the planets. If the third planet is a benefic and
under good influence, it will definitely help the native in his striving. A malefic will destroy and deny all
efforts. Striving can lead to great success or to great failure; the common factor is simply the striving. The
Upachaya and Argala principles will decide the course of action.

THE SEVENTH HARMONIC (H-7)

This is the same as the Saptamsa divisional chart. This is an important chart, which has a strong bearing
on profession and career just like the H-5 chart. Saravali says, a planet in dignity makes the native
courageous, rich and famous (on account of his inherent cosmic creative ability) in Saptamsa chart. Thus
Saptamsa does not only indicate cosmic ability to procreate children, but the overall role of the native to
maintain the continuity of cosmic order.

The seventh Harmonic chart indicates cosmic order. That is why the Saptamsa chart indicates progeny,
the way of the cosmos to continue a native’s lineage. (Compare it with the fifth harmonic, the H-5 chart,
which indicates the capability or idea of making, arranging or constructing from things lying separately in
nature.)

The H-7 chart indicates creative imagination or destructive illusion. It is a harmonic not of unchanging
truth but of sudden flashes of light and darkness; not of an objective but of a subjective reality; not of
knowledge but of intuition or fantasy.The H-7 chart, if strong, represents creative artists, painters, writers,
architects or statesman with vision. On the negative side, this chart can represent murderers and
criminals.

The ascendant, seventh house and the 9th house and their lords should be strong and under benefic
influence in the H-7 chart, this will help to manifest and shine positive creativity in the native. This
Harmonic represents the dynamic force of the native’s inspiration.

I have introduced four Harmonic charts in this article. The Chaturthamsa Harmonic H-4 shows the goals,
which a person is called upon to strive for in order to gain victory over the odds faced in his profession.
The Panchamsa Harmonic H-5 shows power and authority for the creation of a new order or style, the
Saptamsa Harmonic H-7 ( or D-7) shows the nature of the inspiration used and the Navamsa Harmonic
( or V-9) shows the SKILLS and joy/fame derived from perusing a particular activity. This joy comes from
the highest goal of the Jeeva which is to establish himself in Dharma; a goal, which will also bring him a
deep understanding, both within himself and the beyond. The goal of this highest joy could be achieved by
striving (H-4) and by co-operating with the outer world (H-5) using a positively inclined inspiration (H-7).
The ultimate goal of life is hidden is the Navamsa (D-9) and it is considered the most important after the
basic radical chart. The second most important chart is Dasamsa (D-10), which indicates rise and fall in
professional life of the native as well as his ability to perform with the help of bosses, colleagues and other
assistants available to him and workplace. The role of H-4, H-5 and H-7 charts are important but of
secondary importance.

IMPORTANT PRINCIPLES FOR JUDGEMENT


(THIS COULD BE APPLIED TO ANY HOUSE)

PRINCIPLE I

The placement of the 10th lord will tend to carry the effects of the significations of the 10th house
(Mercury, Saturn, Sun and Jupiter). Thus if the 10th lord is in the ascendant, due to the effect of Mercury
the native will be fickle-minded; due to effect of Saturn the native will have ill-health in childhood; due to
the effect of the Sun the native will try to pursue an independent profession; and due to the effect of
Jupiter the native will have fame and prosperity, status and honor.

This is the reason that the Jataka Granthas can specify the effects of each planet in all houses irrespective
of their sign placement. The indications given in Phaldeepika on placement of planets in various house
gives very practical guidance (Chapter 8).

PRINCIPLE II

The 10th lord shows the direction of Karma and the source of fortunes. If the 10th lord is in the 2nd house
or associated with the lord of 2nd house, the family business may be the source of livelihood. If the 10th
lord is weak or afflicted, the family business will be disrupted and cause misfortune to the native. Since
the 2nd house rules food, finance etc., the 10th lord in 2nd house will indicate hotel industries, banking
and financial institutions as places of professional opportunities. If the 10th lord is in the third house or
associated with the third lord, the job may involve constant traveling and short journeys, especially if the
venues are associated with the 10th lord or its trines. This placement also indicates contacts/orders
obtained through tenders. (The results of the different house placements of the 10th lord have been given
in this article in brief.)

PRINCIPLE III

Count the number of signs from the 10th house to the 10th lord and also vice-versa. If the 10th lord is in
the 3rd house, it will be in the 6th from the 10th house and the latter will be in the 8th from its lord. This
implies short-term (8th house), service (6th house), or contracts (3rd house) which can be executed over
a short period .

If the 10th lord is placed in the 5th house, again this will be a 6/8 relationship, which should be
interpreted keeping in view the significations of the 5th house. It may show research, occult studies,
gambling or speculation. From the 10th lord, the 10th house will be in an Upchaya place showing growth
and achievement. It should be borne in mind that natural benefic, like Jupiter or the Moon, if placed in the
8th from their sign, could cause damage to the same, while exchange and other Yogas may modify the
negative results. Such placement also indicate frequent changes in jobs. If 10th lord is strong and
fortified, the changes will be for better and may lift the carrier.

PRINCIPLE IV

The fourth principle is to consider the placement of the 10th house and the 10th lord from Paaka Lagna
and Lagna Pada (Arudh). If the placement of the 10th house or the 10th lord is in the BADHAKSTHAN or a
DUSTHANA from these two lagnas, the results are obstructions and destruction respectively. If the
placement is in good houses, it may promote the career.

PRINCIPLE V

Kalyana Verma, in Saraswati Sloka, 33.2, emphasises the importance of the placement of planets in the
10th house from the Moon sign and Hora Lagna.( Chapter 31 and 33 of Saravali are very informative on
this subject).

The mind is the controller of all actions and activities. The planets in the 10th house from the Moon sign or
the lord of the 10th house from Moon sign will give considerable information about the career and fortunes
of the native. The 10th house from Hora Lagna should be considered in the same manner as the 10th
house from Lagna. For example, if Mars strongly influences the 10th house from the Moon by placement
or lordship, the native may travel to distant places for his livelihood. If malefic planets are in the 10th
house from the Moon, the native could be a remover of evils like a doctor, a priest or an astrologer, or, in
the negative sense, one who will trouble and cheat others.

PRINCIPLE VI

Prasana Marga says, Yogas are formed based on houses, signs and planets.

In natural Celestial Chakra-KALAPURSHA- Aries represents ascendant, Taurus 2nd house and so on in
regular order. Finally, sign Pisces represents 12th house. Similarly, each house has its natural and
permanent significator (Karaka); 1st house- Sun, 2nd –Jupiter, 3rd – Mars, 4th –Moon, 5th –Jupiter, 6th –
Mars and Saturn, 7th –Venus, 8th –Saturn, 9th –Sun and Jupiter, 10th –Sun, Jupiter, Mercury and Saturn,
11th –Jupiter and 12th house –Saturn.

The sign for each house provides the ground or base. The significator builds the BODY over this ground for
each house. This is the permanent arrangement for houses and does not change or vary. The sign and /or
planet(s), occupying any house in a nativity, will find themselves either in harmony, or in partial harmony
or in hostile situation.

Sign Capricorn and Saturn provide ground and four karakas provides the body for 10th house. Besides it is
to be remembered that this is most powerful Kendra (house of action) and upachaya house. Let us
consider some practical examples:

Moon and Jupiter in 10th house: Both these planets are in harmony with two karakas namely Sun/Jupiter,
and in disharmony with sign Capricorn and remaining two karakas Mercury/Saturn. Such persons are
ungrateful, narrow-minded, have fluctuating fortune, may not benefit by parental wealth.

Jupiter and Venus in 10th house: The situation is different and interesting in this case. Jupiter is in
harmony with karakas Jupiter/sun and Venus with mercury/Saturn group. This is a house of action
(Karma). Venus will act as benefic, if native is hard working and religious. And it will obtain support from
friendly karakas Saturn /Mercury. On the other hand, if native will indulge in unholy liaisons and romantic
activities, the help from Jupiter/ sun will banish. Such a situation will result in destruction of family
bondage and lack of benefit from inheritance

RAHU IN 10TH HOUSE: This is being an Upachaya house; Rahu will give material benefits, provided
Saturn is benefic in the nativity under consideration. (Even Ketu will give beneficial results in such
circumstances. Rahu and Ketu give results predominantly according to the house occupied by them).

In nutshell, if more than one planets are placed in 10th house, one group of planet(s)are having affinity
with Jupiter/sun and another group with Saturn/mercury; the signification of house is likely to flourish.
The opposing group of planets will bring harmony in all four Karakas of 10th house. If all the planets in a
house will belong to same group, the adverse results will predominantly occur for want of harmony within
all four Karakas. Such combinations like Moon/Jupiter, Sun/Jupiter/Mars or Saturn/Venus/Mercury may
not be fully beneficial when placed in 10th house. On the other hand, Sun/Mercury, Jupiter /Venus,
Mars/Mercury or Saturn/Jupiter combinations may yield more auspicious results.

This is important and also basic principle to predict and access events. This principle is to be applied to all
houses in similar manner.

CONCLUSION

I have tried to explain the general and overall approach for judging profession and career. Prediction is an
art where many contradictory factors are to be considered and systematically synthesized before arriving
at the final picture.

I suggest that both Vimshottari and Narayana (Sign Dasa) should be considered to chart out the career
graph of the native for reasons already explained in this article.

I have not given here the various combinations that may indicate a particular profession for want of
space. This will be covered in the second part of this article. In this regard, a well-researched article,
written by Justice S.N. Kapoor, under the heading ‘Choosing Education and Profession Astrologically’ may
be referred to. This article is very informative and useful and was published some time ago by I.C.A.S.
(Faridabad chapter).

I have culled the above information from various books and articles published earlier and show my
gratitude to all these savants of Astrology. While preparing this article I have not kept a systematic re
cord of all the references. It is therefore not possible for me to identify or acknowledge all these sources
