TERMINOLOGY

Design Life

• In Pavement Design, the Design life is taken as the “Period of Service” measured
by a specified Number of Passes of standard axles, at the end of which it becomes
necessary to construct an overlay to restore the original riding quality.
• In the AASHTO method design life is defined as Analysis Period.

Resilient Modulus, MR

Modulus of resilience (MR) is defined as the capacity of a material to absorb energy when
deformed elastically. i.e. the maximum energy per volume that can be elastically stored.
Modulus of Resilience, MR can be calculated using the following formula:

σ2
MR =
2E

Where σ is yield stress, E is Young's modulus.

σ = P/A = stress due to dynamic load, deviator stress,
P = applied axial load,
A = the cross sectional area,

MR in calculated from

MR = 1450 x CBR for CBR≤ 5

MR = 145 x 17.6 x CBR 0.64 for CBR > 5
