FUNCTIONS OF LEAF SPRING AND
THE PRVENTIVE MEASURES TO REDUCE FIELD FAILURES

Leaf Spring is that part of the underbelly of the vehicle which is a slightly curved rod like contraption that is designed
to keep the vehicle from wobbling. The leaf (or conventional) spring has one metal strip mounted on another and
designed to absorb the shocks that a vehicle may be subjected to.
The parabolic spring on the other hand, is carefully designed to do a similar function.
A parabolic spring is lighter and thus helps in the over all weight reduction of vehicle resulting in lower fuel
consumption.

FIELD FAILURES:
a. Bad Road Condition
b. Worn out shackle pins & bushes etc
c. Loose U bolt
d Poor brake balance
e. Damaged rubber buffers
f. Shock absorber
g. Repairing and recambering process

A. Spring consumption has direct relationship with road conditions. It will be better if the driver drives the
vehicle cautiously to avoid bad patches on road.

B. If worn out shackle pins and bushes are not replaced, the spring will get shock load in horizontal direction
and spring is likely to break near ends, i.e. main leaf breaking near the eye bush.It is necessary to use the
shackle pins and bushes of correct specifications and regularly grease the shackle pins to see that pin and
bush do not get worn out early and no gap exists between pin and bush.

C. U Bolt Related Failures:- U bolt tightness is the most important factor in the spring maintenance. There
must be absolutely no flexing at the center of spring. The center of the spring at or near hole is the weakest
point (if allowed to (flex) will flex to farthest, otherwise leaf breakage is practically ensured.
Play between Axel and Spring will cause these two to hammer away at each other, until something breaks.
Always torque U bolt to the suspension manufactuer's specifications and torqueing procedures.
When installing/ replacing spring assembly, do not use old U bolts and C bolts because they are stretched and
will not maintain clamping force.

D. Brake Balance: An often overlooked contribution to spring fatigue is poor brake balance. One or more
badly adjusted brake will cause the remaining properly adjusted brakes to do more than their share of stopping
work, it would affect the performance of leaf spring.
The springs at those axel ends get wound up much more than they would if all brakes were pulling equally. The
situation is compounded-when an axel with a wound up spring hits a bump, there is little or no reserve capacity
available to accommodate the additional loading.

E. Damaged Rubber Buffers: Rubber buffers are provided either on the spring top or below the Chasis to see
that the spring does not directly hit the chasis. During operations the rubber buffers get damaged and if they
are not replaced in time, the spring top is likely to hit the chasis under the adverse operating conditions
damaging the spring.

F. Shock Absorbers: Though it does not take load, their fitment helps in proper distribution of load and
vibrations that are caused during operation. Fitment of shock absorbers considerably reduces the spring
consumption.
ADVANTAGE OF PARABOLIC SPRINGS OVER CONVENTIONAL SPRINGS
1. One leaf of parabolic springs carries as much load as three leaves of conventional springs.

2. The weight of springs is reduced by 30% and in turn the pay load of the vehicle increases.

3. In parabolic springs each leaf acts as a separate springs.

4. In parabolic springs all leaves have full length so that it carries the same load as conventional leaf springs.

5. Design of the parabolic springs is such that there is gap between each leaf which reduces the frictions between
the leaves and provides better ride comfort.

6. Raw material used in manufacturing parabolic springs is 50CrV4/SUP-11 as compared to EN-45A, 65Si7 or
SUP-9 for conventional springs which gives higher strength.

7. The leaves of parabolic springs are stress shot-peened in controlled manner as compared to shot-peened for
conventional springs, which gives higher life.

8. In parabolic springs, the eye thickness is increased to 15mm as compared to 13mm conventional springs,
which reduces the eye failures in the field.

9. For better surface protection Henkel coating for parabolic springs is done as compared to black oxide coat for
conventional springs.

PRE - INSTALLATION PRECAUTIONS

1. Suspension is designed to operate within specific parameters. Operating the suspension outside the design
parameters may results in improper performance.

2. In parabolic springs assembly, the installer should ensure that the same design of auxiliaries or any other
leaves are fitted.

3. Using conventional leaves in parabolic assembly may desired out put of the parabolic assembly.

4. Welding and hammering on parabolic leaves should be avoided.

5. The installer should ensure that there is sufficient clearance for fitment of shock absorber so that it is properly.

6. Use of standard fasteners such as Centre Bolt, U Bolts, Clamps, Clamps Bolts and Liners and their tightening
to the proper torque values would ensure no premature failure.
