March 10, 2011

Dear Students, Alumni and Prospective Students:

It is my sincere pleasure to announce that as of March 8, 2011, the Board of Regents of the University
System of Georgia has officially approved the PhD in Public Health in the Institute of Public Health at
Georgia State University. Establishing a PhD program will put us one step closer to becoming a School of
Public Health, which is part of the university's strategic plan: http://www.gsu.edu/strategicplan/. Very
soon, we will post admissions requirements, start dates, curriculum requirements and address other
frequently asked questions on our website. In the interim, if you are interested in this program and wish to
express your intent via email, please do so by e-mailing the Institute of Public Health at
publichealth@gsu.edu. Please include a resume/CV and indicate when you plan to complete your MPH
program if you haven't done so already. Also, if you are a graduate of a non-MPH program, please include
an overview of your course work and major area of focus in that program.

As you may know, the Institute of Public Health is accredited by the Council on Education for Public Health
(CEPH), and it is our mission to provide instruction in the five core knowledge areas as determined by CEPH.
Those competencies are listed as follows:

1. Biostatistics
2. Epidemiology
3. Environmental health sciences
4. Health services administration
5. Social & behavioral sciences

In your email, please list your number 1 and 2 core areas of interest, and identify specific topics/research
you may wish to study in those core areas on the doctoral level. We encourage you to review the areas of
research and faculty backgrounds listed on our website: publichealth.gsu.edu.

As soon as we have more information on next steps, we will contact you again. We also encourage you to
visit our website often for updates.

Sincerely,

Michael P. Eriksen
Director and Professor
