Lesson Title: World Populations, Migration

Objective: TLW be able to define demographic concepts (population, population distribution, population density,
growth rate, family size, and infant mortality); TLW analyze and interpret a population pyramid; TLW identify reasons
why people choose to settle in different places (occupation, family, climate, natural resources)

Guiding Questions: Why does much of the world’s population live on a relatively small area of the Earth? What does
a population pyramid indicate about a county’s inhabitants? What factors lead to people migrating from one place to
another? How are world civilizations impacted by the location of water?

Cougar Prep: What is another name for global warming? Give an example of how water is polluted. Give an example
of how air is polluted.

Distributed Practice:
 TLW create foldable from demographic concepts PPT.
 TLW Census 2010 data for the state of TN and answer questions regarding the population pyramid given.
o PP shows how many males and females for each age range live in a certain place.
o What percentage of females between the ages of 10-14 live in TN? (about 3 percent)
o What percentage of both males and females between the ages of 10-14 live in TN? (about 6.5 percent)
o What is the age range with the lowest percent?
o What is the age range with the highest percent?
 TLW take notes from migration PPT.
 TLW complete Map Skill p. 75, questions 1-2.

Homework: TLW write a children’s story (1 pg.) about moving. The story should include why a family/child might
move to a different location.
