MIHAIL

THE
forgotten
PRINT
EDITION
MIHAIL 2004

The forgotten PRINT EDITION was printed by the artist in

1974 in his New York studio. It is from the HOSHO series of
prints (1972-1974). HOSHO is the name of the Japanese rise
paper on which they were printed. Printed from engraved
plaster plate where colors are applied on the plate and on the
back of the paper when laid over, a technic the artist invented
while residing inTunis (1965-1971).

This print edition finished with pastels: each print exploring

the variable potential of the artist’s SUNDAY MORNING
elements which constitute the body of the work.

At that time,1974, Mihail was already moving to another idea,

casting from nature; SAND in the Sahara dessert of Tunis, and
cast of GRASS in France. Two years later he would embark on
his CAST THE SLEEPING ELEPHANT project, the cast of a
wild, bull elephant in wilderness of Kenya and a bronze
sculpture installed in 1998 at the United Nations Headquarters
in New York, gift of Kenya, Namibia and Nepal.

The FORGOTTEN EDITION, locked for the past 37 years, has

never been exhibited.
