Importance

Magnetic fluids are used as a heat

carrier in cooling systems in
microelectronics and on spacecrafts.

Studying the behavior of magnetic

colloids subject to a long-term non-
uniform heating is of major practical
interest.

1
Magnetic fluid or ferrocolloid

Polietilsiloksan colloid with magnetite phase stabilized

by oleic acid.
Ferromagnetic particle size ~10 nm.

MS = 48 kA/m,
η = 0.365 Pa·s,
ρ = 1.46·103 kg/m3

2
Experimental cavity

ΔT’ Δ T

Diameter of spherical cavity is 16 mm.

Dimensions of plexiglass block are 53x53x18 mm.
Thickness of plate is 1 mm.
ΔT and ΔT’ - temperature differences between the cavity poles and between the 3
heat exchangers.

Conclusion

When the magnetic fluid in the spherical cavity is heated

from below horizontal magnetic field has the following
effects:
the rotation axis of the convective roll is aligned in the
magnetic field direction;
the intensity of the convective motion is reduced.
