My friend, John Phillips, said, "The Bible is full of people and places.
I t is a book of names. The first person to ever live on this earth was
named by God Himself." Genesis 5:2
One of the most fascinating studies in all the Bible is the study of
the o.T. and N.T. characters. These characters give to us some of
the richest biographical material found anywhere. Thomas Carlyle
said, "Great men", are the inspired text of the book of history."
I wish only to whet your appetite for further Bible study. As you
will see, I am going to mention just a few of these o.T. characters,
though the names of the o.T. characters that I wish to deal with
may not, in my opinion, be the greatest or the least mentioned. To
Illustrate, may I point out that the book of Genesis is taken up
entirely with four major characters:
1
4) Joseph - suffering and triumphant faith.
TYPOLOGY...
( 1) A type of Christ;
( 2) A type of the natural man.
2
foresaw some truth about the Lord Jesus.
1. Type of Christ ... as head of a race ...I Cor. 15:21, 22, 45b, 47b,
establishing a close parallelism between Adam and Christ, the
l ast Adam, first earthly ... last heavenly. First came in life -giving
death, last came for death to impute life, was great in strength
but came in weakness - John 19. In his relationship to Eve - Eph.
5. Adam became a partaker of Eve's sin, same as Christ and
church. First Adam was sinless at start, fig. Of Him to come -
Romans 5:14.
A. Type of Christ in CHARACTER - Gen. 1:27, "So God created
man in His own IMAGE." See Col 1:15 with Heb. 1:3.
B. Type of Christ in His AUTHORITY - Gen. 1:28, "...HAVE
dominion..." See Psalm 8:6 with Heb. 2:5-8.
C. Type of Christ in RESPONSIBILITY - Gen. 1:28, "...MULTIPLY...
and REPLENISH the earth..." (i.e., become Head of a race
by NATURAL GENERATION). Gen. 5:1-2; See Heb. 2:9-17
(i.e., becoming Head of a new race by SUPERnatural
Regeneration). See, too, Eph. 1:22; 4:15; 5:23.
D. Type of Christ in his PROGENY - Gen. 5:3, "Adam ...begot a
son in HIS OWN likeness, after HIS image" (i.e., Adam thus
passing on to the race of NATURALLY - born men a SINFUL
and DEATHFUL life. (See Rom. 5:12) CP I Cor. 15:47-49,
".... we shall also bear the IMAGE of the heavenly" (i.e., Christ,
thus He passing on to the new race of SUPERnaturally
REborn men a SINLESS and DEATHLESS life).
See I John 5:10-14.
E. Type of Christ in OUTREACH - I Cor. 15:22, "...in Adam ALL
DIE ... in Christ shall ALL BE MADE TO LIVE" (Relating to a
universal resurrection, they that have done good (the saved)
unto the resurrection of LIFE, they that have done evil (the
unsaved) unto the resurrection of damnation." (John 5:29).
2. Type of the natural man ... in fallen state. Death to all members
of the first family because their father died. Cf...when Adam
died spiritually Gen. 2:17; 3:7; James 2:26. The entire
race ... man ... the fact that restoration needs to be made, Psalms
8:5-6; Heb. 2:7-8; Romans 5:12, 17-19; I Cor. 15:45a, 47a. There are
only two men in God's sight, the first Adam and the last Adam.
The N.T. regards Adam as father of the whole human race ... new
man makes sin his own. Adam's primitive condition (Gen. 2:8-25)
which would be shared by ail men based on Adam's work...
li kewise... all men would die. Gen. 2:17, 3:17.
THE PURPOSE...
to teach the necessity of complete obedience and
dependence upon one over you. Gen. 2:16-17...cf ... Romans
3
8:16-17. We should obey our maker ... and our lifegiver. Man
was both a made and created being. Gen. 2:7. Formed...
made from preexisting material, the dust. Breathed...
created... cf...Gen. 1:27 no previous existing material. Gen.
1:26-27 Image ... likeness in character. Character has no form.
The Spirit was the image of God. Our bodies are in the
li keness of earthly Adam, first birth ... our new creation,
second birth ... spirit, we are to be like Christ, the last Adam.
PICTURE OF SALVATION...
THE COMMAND...
Salvation based on complete obedience Gen. 2:16-17 Adam
was sinless at the first part of his life. Ga. 5:16. TheE
commandment was to be maintained cf...Romans 7:10 etc.
THE CRISIS...
Obedience must follow the command ...but-it is confronted
with temptation Genesis 3:1-6. Temptation calls for a
decision to be made. There are only two ways to go ... will
Adam justify self by making his own decision ... or-will he
submit to obedience of God's will. The same as us, our daily
decisions when made for self ...de-throne the glory of Christ.
THE RESULT...
the fall, death ; every decision brings results, Gen. 3:7. As one
of us ... Gen. 3:22 in the exercising of Adam's own will. This is
not what God had planned, God's Will was the only one to be
obeyed. He was driven away...two wills cannot be exercised
unless agreed - Amos 3:3. Here the eyes of both were
opened because the whole body had sinned, now another
crisis ... again self justification - Gen. 3:7. The whole world was
cursed from the sin of man - Gen. 3:17. The fall was the
ground of Christ's redemption.
CONVICTION...
Gen. 3:8,9,10,12 Self justification will last among men, just as
Adam and Eve had no trouble among themselves but it
didn't last. When God came in their presence, they had a
guilt complex.
THE CALL...
Gen. 3:9 first question in the Bible. God came seeking and
His method is still the same. The question demands an
answer.
THE ANSWER...
Gen. 3:10 confession, naked (but they were dressed) he was
acknowledging his shame. V-12 woman's fault (but he had to
still confess)... I did eat.
4
Gen. 3:21. Salvation provided for all those who take this
position, acknowledgement of their position and receiving
what they are unable to do. This shows that salvation is all of
God's grace. The law of substitution given to Adam was passed
on to his sons - Gen. 4:4-5.
1. NAME...
A. EVE...
Hebrew word, Chavvah (khav-vaw') Gen. 3:20 named after the
fall, the second name given by Adam.
MEANING OF NAME ... EVE
Life giver or first woman, to declare or show, give (promise)
life, be whole, mother of all living.
B. WOMAN...
Hebrew word, Ishshah(Ish-shaw') Genesis 2:23 the first name
given by Adam.
MEANING OF NAME ... WOMEN
Maness, together, wife, female, multiplied many, a
designation reference to her relation to the man.
C. ADAM...
Hebrew word, Adam (aw-dawm') Genesis 5:2 - The name
given by God.
MEANING OF NAME ... ADAM
5
Here the emphasis is on the one Flesh
Eve taken out of Adam's side during the deep sleep is a picture of
the Church being taken out of Christ's side while He is tarrying.
"Side" - "Blood" - Lev. 17:11; Gen. 9:4; (Blood cells, Heb. 4:12) (rib-
"tsela" - John 19:34-36; I John 5:5-8) (witnesses of the death and
finished work of Christ ... the producing of a bride ... obedience kept
the whole body from falling ... Woman (the Church) formed from
man's (Christ's) body sets forth the dependence of the woman (the
church) upon the man (Christ) also gives the close relationship. As
Eve was a part of Adam ... so are we a part of Christ. CF ...Eph. 1:22-23;
2:15-16; 5:22-33 etc.
PURPOSE...
To teach obedience ... also shows we are to be in subjection
to the one placed over us. Most all trouble comes from
i gnoring this law.
6
Mentioned twice in the N.T....Paul reminds us that we, like Eve, are
i n danger of being led away from the simplicity of Christ's teaching
and in danger of being hurt by the "subtility of the serpent" which
brought disunity. (II Cor. 11:2-3).
Woman was given to man for fellowship - Gen. 2:18 ... same as our
fellowship with Christ. Notice ... God brought the woman to man-
Genesis 2:22. The same as the Church will be brought to Christ.
Satan told Eve she would gain for herself new delight if she ate.
Trouble came from seizing that which did not belong to her. The
first and second acts shows woman's impulsiveness and man's
i nclination to follow her wherever she leads ... even to the depths of
sin, which was the disobeying of God.
7
THE CURSE ON WOMAN...
Gen. 3:16 - Bear children in travail and be subject to her
husband. She lost equal rights but will regain them in glory.
Now a veil is placed between man and God ... also between
man and woman, because a God ordained marriage is not
possible in their fallen state. CF ...Exodus 26:33 - The rending
of the veil at Christ's death opened the way to God and also
to be one in the Lord ... in marriage.
Satan in both cases (Eve and the Church) tried to spoil God's work.
The object was to make God's word and His goodness doubted.
Genesis 3:4.

survival.
He was the first son of Adam, human race - Gen. 4:1 (Cf. Exodus 12;
first born Egypt). First farmer, Gen. 4 :2, what he offered, fruit of
the earth, what anyone could do, but there was no sacrifice by
substitution in it, it was casually offered. Note difference in
attitude, he had knowledge of a demanded sacrifice by substitution.
He was the first murderer - Gen. 4:8; first liar - 4:9; first fugitive 4:12
from the consequence of murder, the first born of sin. Became an
outcast, he had no claim, no liberty, no privilege. He fled east of
Eden to the land of Nod where the first city was built - Gen. 4:17,
named after his first son Enoch.
Abel is a Type of the SPIRITUAL man ... Gen. 4:4 with Heb. 11:4 ...Cf I
Cor. 2:15.
9
James 4:8 with He. 7:19 and Eph. 2:13.
C. He is a Type of the Spiritual man in his ACCEPTANCE WITH
GOD... Gen. 4:4b and 7a...Cf I Thess. 1:9-10.
D. He is a Type of the Spiritual man as to his DESTINY ... He. 11:3...
