WiMAX is a multi-layered technology where the complexities center around the interactions between the MAC and PHY layers for maximum performance and network throughput. The WaveJudge brings to the WiMAX industry a unique blend of both PHY and MAC analysis attributes, allowing cross probing between these layers as trouble shooting often requires. This capability brings quick resolution without multiple test equipment configurations, minimizing extraneous anomalies affecting true root-cause analysis.

Cross probing: the information you’ve been needing all along

The power of the WaveJudge as a multilayer passive analysis tool is the insight it provides into the interaction between the PHY and MAC layers.

The WaveJudge provides visual correlation between MAC management messages and the PHY layer transmissions. You can select a MAC message, identified by timestamp, direction (UL or DL) and message type, and then automatically view the RF transmission on a WaveJudge trace which

includes not only Time Domain power but adds 2D frequency vs. time with logical views.

Cross probing and correlation allow you to quickly and easily:

• Verify changes in power, frequency and timing as the MS enters the network by visually tracking the BS requests and MS responses.

• Analyze and detect faulty maps and compare with resultant bursts sent in incorrect frame locations.

• Examine the preamble of specific messages to verify the index and the subcarrier energy scheme.

• Reveal timing offset violations by viewing the position of MS messages relative to the allocation start time assigned by the BS.

• Identify subchannels and subcarriers used for each slot within a MAC PDU message to determine proper zone permutation assignments.

• Visually locate BS scheduling errors through advanced logical views of UL/DL Zone assignments.

Obtaining all this information at a single test point also reduces the sources of extraneous anomalies that can cloud results and

mask the true root cause.
