Examine career progression in ONE public
service
POLICE FORCE
For AO6 I am going to be studying the ranks and
different positions in the police force. I am also going
to be looking at what qualification you need to skip
then ranking tables and start half way up the ranking
table.
Commissioner

Commissioner is a senior rank used in many police forces and

may be rendered Police Commissioner or Commissioner of
Police.

Deputy Commissioner
The Deputy Commissioner takes orders for the Commissioner
and passes then down to his Assistant Commissioner.

Assistant Commissioner

This is the lowest level of Commissioner but stay is a very high

level with a starting salary of about 180,000 a year.
Deputy Assistant
Commissioner

It is the fourth highest paid officer behind Commissioner, Deputy

Commissioner, and Assistant Commissioner.

Commander
Commander is a rank used in other public services such as fire
service, RAF, and the armed forces.

Chief Superintendant
In the British police force, your starting salary is £74,394 then after
time it goes up to £78,636
Superintendant
The rank of Superintendent was introduced at the foundation of the
Metropolitan Police in 1829.

Chief Inspector
In the British police, a Chief Inspector is senior to an Inspector and
junior to a Superintendent. It is approximately equivalent to the rank
of Captain in United States police forces.

Inspector

The rank is mostly operational, meaning that inspectors are directly

concerned with day-to-day policing.

Sergeant
Within the British police, Sergeant is the first supervisory
rank.
Uniformed Sergeants are often responsible for supervising a
shift of Constables and allocating duties to them.
Constable
This is a starting rank and when you want to enter unless you
have a qualification you would start here.
