Traditional color combinations: 1. Blue contrasted with orange-red. Tint blue with white, orange- red with yellow. Shade blue with purple, orange red with a darker red .. Highlight blue with white; orange-red with yellow. 2. Green contrasted with rose/pink. Tint green with yellow, rose with white. Shade green with blue, rose with purple. Highlights are yellow on green, white on rose.

Trace and Transfer the design to watercolor paper.

Draw out a botanical to fit the letter; trace and transfer. The background of the botanical is gold. Let dry; burnish. Paint the square in a red. Paint the letter a blue. Gold may

Be applied to the corners of the square as shown. Dry; burnish. With a wash of white, paint in the larger ribbon design; when dry, highlight with white; crisp up your edges with red or blue.

Shadows can be surprisingly complex. Remember that shadows have definite shapes, and the arrangement of lights and darks defines the form. Shadows are not flat, dark areas; there are areas of light and dark in the shadow. On gold, a shadow may be a mix of burnt sienna added to the color(s) of the flower. Try glazing one color over the other or stippling complementary colors.
