Single-Particle Transition (Weisskopf Estimate)

For an electric single-particle transition we assume excitation of only one

proton in an average central potential that changes its orbit from j i to jf . A
magnetic transition takes place when the intrinsic spin is flipped, i.e., j i = `i ±
1/2 → jf = `f ∓ 1/2, respectively. For a magnetic transition the multipolarity
λ is given by |ji − jf | = λ and |`i − `f | = λ − 1.
A useful scale of B(Eλ)- and B(M λ)-values are the Weisskopf units which
allow a rough estimate of the number of nucleons contributing to radiation.
For a transition from an excited state Ii to the ground state Igs we find in the
electric (Eλ) and magnetic (Mλ) case

(1.2)2λ 3 2 2λ/3 2
B(Eλ; Ii → Igs ) = ( ) A e (f m)2λ (1)
4π λ+3
10 3 2 (2λ−2)/3 2
B(M λ; Ii → Igs ) = (1.2)2λ−2 ( ) A µN (f m)2λ−2 (2)
π λ+3
For the first few values of λ, the Weisskopf estimates are

B(E1; Ii → Igs ) = 6.446 10−4 A2/3 e2 (barn) (3)

B(E2; Ii → Igs ) = 5.940 10−6 A4/3 e2 (barn)2 (4)
B(E3; Ii → Igs ) = 5.940 10−8 A2 e2 (barn)3 (5)
B(E4; Ii → Igs ) = 6.285 10−10 A8/3 e2 (barn)4 (6)

B(M 1; Ii → Igs ) = 1.790 ( ) (7)
