been done by someone else.
There are many ways of repair,
depending upon the amount of damage.
Any of these repairs will require
dropping the keel out of the boat and the
easiest way to do that is raising the boat
on the trailer by jacking under the
centerline at the transom about a foot,
placing blocks of wood (about 12 inch
cubes) on the trailer bunks by jacking
under the center line at about the forward
edge of the keel trunk. Once the boat is
blocked up it is safe to work under it.
The other way is to use a sling and hoist
the boat off the trailer, but a hoist is not
always available.
If the damage is slight, remove ALL
of the fiberglass from the area where it
has separated from the cast iron, clean
the cast iron to bare metal, and prime and
patch the fiberglass. Be sure to sand the
patch so that it is fair.
If the damage is extensive the keel
can be re-fiberglassed in its entirely.
Again, be sure to clean and prepare the
cast iron very well. If ANY moisture
gets between the glass and the cast iron,
it WILL rust and the rust WILL force
more delamination.
Other methods of treatment that I've
seen are to coat the cast iron with
"GLUVIT", to paint it and then fair it
with a filler, or, if you've got a very good
casting, to just paint it with a heavy paint
I've never seen it done, but I imagine that
a polyurethane paint would be very good
since it provides a surface similar to a
fiberglass gel-coat
If you don't race the boat, there are
protective coatings that can be used and
perform their jobs pretty well. In the
paints, RUST-0-LEUM does a pretty
good job. Again, it does require the keel
be prepared, but it is not so critical as
with fiberglassing the keel. There are
other waterproofing compounds,
including roofing tar, that will adequately
protect the keel from corrosion, but it is
very difficult to got a good surface with
them.
As for me, I have had a compound
called "tar set" applied. It works good
and is very tenacious, but the surface is
NOT very good for racing. I do race, but
