GUIDELINES FOR MTO

MTO is issued in 3 stages:

Sl. Stages of MTO Basis of MTO % Accuracy

1. Bulk MTO This MTO is based on P&IDs with 60 – 80%
pipes and elbows being estimated
from Preliminary piping study or plot
plan & interconnecting diagram.
2. Intermediate MTO This MTO is a revision of Bulk MTO 75 – 90%
and based on piping layouts and
should ideally differ only in the pipe
& elbow quantities from Bulk MTO,
unless there are revisions in P&IDs
3. Final MTO This MTO is based on Isometrics 95% ± 5%

A. MTO Input:
MTO should be input manually in the input sheet prior to input in soft copy to minimize errors

1. MTO should always be taken LINEWISE, i.e. MTO for each individual line in a single input sheet.
2. While taking MTO from P&ID, only those lines having their origin in that P&ID should be
considered.
3. For lines going across multiple P&IDs, the P&ID number for each item in the line’s MTO should be
given separately in front of the listed item. This practice can be followed for all items except pipes and
elbows since they are not considered from P&IDs. Refer sample sheet-1 for better understanding.
4. All HOLDS should be clearly stated under HOLDS column alongwith the reason behind HOLD. For
e.g. if size is on HOLD, “SIZE HOLD” should be mentioned under HOLDS column. This enables
better clarity with respect to the reason for HOLD & percentage of the total MTO which is on HOLD.
5. All assumptions should be clearly stated under ASSUMPTIONS column alongwith the assumed detail.
For e.g. if reducer size in control loop is assumed one size less than line size in absence of data in
P&ID, the same should be stated under ASSUMPTIONS column.
6. Bolts should be given as no. of SETS in the input sheet which can be converted to no. of pieces in
Summary stage.
7. All branch connections should be identified as BRANCH only in the input sheet. The same can be
converted appropriately in accordance with Piping Specification in Summary stage. All branches
which do not terminate in equipments or other lines, for e.g. branches for online instrument mounting,
control loop bypass line branch should be clearly identified with appropriate description under
REMARKS column. Refer sample sheet-2 for better understanding.
8. Type of each item should be clearly identified as follows in the input sheet. If the type is assumed, it
should be clearly stated under ASSUMPTIONS column in input sheet & later in MTO Basis.
a. Type of reducers, whether concentric or eccentric should be clearly identified.
b. Type of elbows, whether 90o or 45o should be clearly identified.
c. Degree of bends should be clearly identified.
d. Type of Couplings, Swages should be clearly identified.
9. The following items should only be listed in the input sheet at MTO Input stage and added in
Summary stage in accordance with appropriate documents/drawings:
a. Instruments like PG,PT,TG,TE,TT,FT etc
b. Vessel trim
