Table 4-1 Clock synchronization modes supported by the BTS

Clock Description
Synchronization
Mode

GPS/GLONASS The BTS provides the GPS/GLONASS clock input port and obtains
clock source clock signals through the external GPS/GLONASS equipment.

RGPS clock source The BTS provides the RGPS interface and obtains clock signals
through the external RGPS equipment.

BITS clock source The BBU3900 provides the 2.048 MHz BITS clock port to support
the BITS clock mode.

Abis interface clock The BBU3900 supports the extraction of clock signals directly from
source ports such as the E1/T1 port. The clock module performs frequency
division, phase locking, and phase adjustment for the clock signals.
In this way, accurate 2 MHz and 8 KHz clock signals are obtained
and used for frame synchronization and bit synchronization inside
the BTS.

Internal clock signals When external clock sources are not available, the oscillators of the
BBU3900 boards provide 10 MHz clock signals to guarantee the
normal running of the BTS.

As the most commonly used networking mode, the star networking mode is especially applicable
to densely populated areas.

Figure 5-1 shows the star networking mode.

Figure 5-1 Star networking mode

Advantages
l The BTS is directly connected to the BSC, thus guaranteeing simplicity in networking and
convenience in engineering, maintenance, and capacity expansion.
l Data transmission is implemented directly between the BTS and the BSC, and therefore
signals do not have to go through many nodes. In this way, the reliability of the line is high.

Disadvantages
The star networking modes requires more transmission resources than other networking modes.

5.2 Chain Networking Mode

This topic describes the application scenarios, advantages, and disadvantages of the chain
networking mode.

Product Description 5 Transmission and Networking of the BTS

Application Scenarios
The chain networking mode is applicable to sparsely populated strip areas, for example, areas
along superhighways and railways.
Figure 5-2 shows the chain networking mode.

Figure 5-2 Chain networking mode

Advantages
The chain networking mode helps reduce the costs of transmission equipment, of engineering
construction, and of transmission link rental.

Disadvantages
l Signals go through a large number of nodes, and therefore the line reliability is low.
l Faults in upper-level BTSs may affect the normal operation of lower-level BTSs.
l The number of chain levels cannot exceed three.

5.3 Tree Networking Mode

This describes the application scenarios, advantages, and disadvantages of the tree networking
mode.

Application Scenarios
The tree networking mode is applicable to areas where network structures, site distribution, and
subscriber distribution are complicated, for example, areas where subscribers are widely
distributed and hot spots gather.
Figure 5-3 shows the tree networking mode.

5 Transmission and Networking of the BTS Product Description

Figure 5-3 Tree networking mode

Advantages
The transmission cable loss in tree networking mode is less than that in star networking mode.

Disadvantages
l Signals travel through many nodes, which cause low transmission reliability and
construction and maintenance difficulties.
l Faults in upper-level BTSs may affect the normal operation of lower-level BTSs.
l Capacity expansion is difficult because it may require extensive network reconstruction.
l The number of tree levels cannot exceed three.

6.1 Operation and Maintenance Modes of the BTS

This describes the operation and maintenance modes of the BTS. The BTS can be maintained
locally, through the LMT, or through the centralized network management system.

Figure 6-1 shows the networking of the operation and maintenance system.

Figure 6-1 Networking of the operation and maintenance system

The BTS supports the following operation and maintenance modes:

l Maintenance through the centralized network management system: The M2000, Huawei's
centralized management system for wireless networks, can be used to maintain BTSs
through the operation and maintenance network. The M2000 supports the operation and
maintenance of sites, cells, carriers, channels, and boards. Centralized network
management is used for the maintenance of multiple BTSs.
l Maintenance through the LMT: The LMT can be used to maintain the BTS through the
operation and maintenance link provided by the Abis interface between the BSC and the
BTS. The LMT communicates with the BSC through a LAN. Through the LMT, you can
perform operation and maintenance for the sites, cells, carriers, channels, and boards. The
LMT is used to configure and adjust the data of the BSC and BTS.
l Local maintenance: The maintenance terminal of the BTS is used to maintain the BTS
locally through Ethernet. Through the maintenance terminal of the BTS, you can perform
operation and maintenance for the sites, cells, carriers, baseband, channels, and boards. The
maintenance terminal is used to maintain single BTS.

This describes the operation and maintenance functions of the BTS. These functions are used
for equipment management, software management, configuration management, service
management, performance management, security management, alarm management, and
environment monitoring.

Equipment Management
Equipment management refers to equipment maintenance and data configuration. The detailed
equipment management functions are as follows:
l Equipment maintenance: board resetting, equipment status management, equipment self-
testing, active/standby switchovers, and time calibration
l Data configuration: configuration, querying, and backup of equipment parameters, for
example, configurations of the hardware, clock parameters, algorithm parameters, and RF
parameters

Software Management
The detailed software management functions are as follows:
l Software activation
l Checking the consistency between software and hardware versions
l Querying hardware and software versions
l Upgrading the software version

Configuration Management
The detailed configuration management functions are as follows:
l Checking data consistency in the addition, deletion, and modification of the BTS data
l Supporting automatic data backup
l Supporting dynamic data configuration, which enables the data to take effect immediately,
and static data configuration, which requires the BTS to be reset for the data to take effect

Service Management

6 Operation and Maintenance of the BTS Product Description

l Monitoring the running of the system, for example, monitoring of the traffic over each port
and statistics of technical data during running
l Monitoring of the usage of key components such as the CPUs of boards

Security Management
The BTS supports the management of connection between the BTS software and the OMC,
subscriber authentication and encryption, and forward and reverse resolution of interface
messages.

Alarm Management
Alarm management refers to equipment alarm management and environment alarm
management.
l Equipment alarm management
The equipment is monitored in real time. When a fault or exception occurs, an alarm is
reported, and the alarm management function of the LMT or M2000 is used to display the
alarm information and give suggestions for handling the alarm.
The alarm management system of the M2000 is connected to an alarm box through the
serial port and supports both audible and visual alarms. The user can subscribe to the alarms.
When an alarm is generated, it is sent to the mobile phones or pagers of maintenance
personnel so that the maintenance personnel can obtain the information of the fault or
exception in time.
l Environment alarm management
Generally, the equipment room of the BTS are sparsely distributed and not attended.
Compared with the equipment room of an exchange, the equipment room of the BTS has
fewer and simpler facilities, and the equipment runs in harsh environments. Besides,
accidents such as water damage and fire may occur in the equipment room. The BTS has
a powerful environment monitoring subsystem, which guarantees the normal running of
equipment and helps you deal with emergencies.

The detailed alarm management functions are as follows:

l Alarm detection
l Alarm reporting
l Alarm masking
l Alarm confirmation
l Alarm pre-processing
l Alarm correlation processing

away from the front of the cabinet when no protective board is installed at the front and rear of the cabinet.

Biological Requirements
The biological requirements for the running environment of the equipment are as follows:
l The environment is not conducive to the growth of microorganisms, such as fungi.
l The equipment is protected from rodents, such as mice.

Air Purity Requirements

The air purity requirements for the running environment of the equipment are as follows:
l The air is free from explosive, electroconductive, magnetoconductive, and corrosive dust.
l The concentration of mechanically active substances complies with the requirements (for
the BBU only) listed in Table 7-25.
