    Pneumonia, diarrhea, and neonatal causes like prematurity, low birth weight, birth asphyxia and infections were the leading causes of death for children under 5 globally in 2008, accounting for over 50% of deaths. Specifically, neonatal infections and prematurity/low birth weight together caused over half of the 40% of under-5 deaths occurring in the neonatal period, while pneumonia and diarrhea were the largest post-neonatal period causes, together responsible for over 25% of under-5 deaths. Malnutrition also contributed to 35% of all under-5 deaths.
