MICROSILICA
General
Microsilica, also known as silica fume, is a material that is used as pozzolanic admixture in concrete.
It is a filter powder generated from the reduction of high purity quartz with coal in an electric arc
furnace in the manufacture of silicon or ferrosilicon alloy. It consists primarily of very fine smooth
spherical silicon oxide particles
ticles (SiO2) greater than 85% and has an extremely high surface area
which is about 100 times finer than cement particles. When added to concrete, it changes the
rheology and reacts with the cement hydration products to dramatically improve concrete strengths,
stren
durability and impermeability. The dosage varies between 3 % to 10% by weight of cement depending
on its application.

Bulk Density
3
Microsilica collected direct from the bag house has a bulk density of 200200-250kg/m . During normal
3 3
handling this increaseses up to 300kg/m . The bulk density is further increased between 500-700kg/m
500
to facilitate handling, packing and transport by inducing agglomeration by blowing air through it while
stored in a silo. This causes the particles to move around and bond togeth
together
er by Van de Waals forces.

Packaging
Bulk bag sizes in 850 or 900 Kg are available. Bulk in road tanker deliveries can also be arranged.
