V A magnet is a material or object that produces a

magnetic field.
V This magnetic field is invisible but is
responsible for the most notable property of a
magnet: a force that pulls on other
ferromagnetic materials, such as iron, and
attracts or repels other magnets
V atural:
-Magnetite Fe3O4
V Man-made:
-usually made of a mixture of iron (Fe), cobalt
(Co), nickel (i) and other elements.
V Magnetism is a property of materials that
respond at an atomic or subatomic level to an
applied magnetic field
V The most well known form of magnetism is
ferromagnetism such that some ferromagnetic
materials produce their own persistent
magnetic field
V Ferromagnetism: when a material can possess
magnetization in the absence of an external
magnetic field; a substance in which the
magnetic moments of the atoms are aligned.
V A magnetic field is characterized by "north"
and "south" poles, which are sometimes also
referred to as being positive or negative. orth
poles are attracted to south poles and north
poles repel other north poles. The reason
magnets stick to materials like iron and steel is
because these metals are ferromagnetic.
V Magnetic Moment: a quantity that determines
the force the magnet can exert on electric
currents and the torque that a magnetic field
will exert on it.
V ëaramagnet: a body or substance that when
placed in a magnetic field possesses
magnetization in direct proportion to the field
strength; a substance in which the magnetic
moments of the atoms are not aligned.
V The magnetic moments of this form of
magnetism are very weak.
-Ex: aluminum and platinum
V riamagnetic: in a magnetic field, the
substance·s induced magnetism is in a
direction opposite to that of iron.
-Ex: Bismuth and Copper
V °ubstances that are negligibly affected by
magnetic fields are known as non-magnetic
substances. They include copper, gases, and
plastic.
V °ubstances are magnetized by a couple of
different methods. You could move a
permanent magnet in one direction across the
material to magnetize it. You could produce an
electric current through coils around the
substance to magnetize it. And some magnets
can be made from a chemical reaction.
V Ex: certain elements will become magnetic
when reacting with oxygen
V Electromagnetism is the force that causes the
interaction between electrically charged
particles; the areas in which this happens are
called electromagnetic fields.
