Enduring Understandings for the Unit:
Parallel lines and their properties can be used in everyday
applications
Lesson 1: Parallel lines and Transversals
Essential Questions
a. What are vertical angles?
b. Do parallel lines cut by transversals create special angles?

What kind of lines are these?
What are other examples of parallel lines in this room?
A few definitions before we get started:

Lines in the same plane that will never intersect and have the
same slope are called parallel lines. Parallel lines will continue
forever without touching as long as they are in the same plane.
What are created when a transversal intersects
the parallel lines?
angles

On your worksheet do the following:
1. Label the first one: Corresponding Angles
2. Now take 4 different colors and color each pair of
corresponding angles a different color.
you should have four different pairs of
corresponding angles
each pair should be a different color
Using symbols, this is how we would write it:
<1≅<5 <2≅<6
<3≅<7 <4≅<8
These angles would be defined as:

On your worksheet do the following:
1. Label the second one: Adjacent, Supplementary,
and Straight Angles
• What do these have in common? all equal 180o
• color the straight angle green and place a green arc over the
straight angle. hint: should be a semicircle
Need two students.
Stand side by side.
• What would you call neighbors who lived right next to each
other on the same side of the street?
• They would be next door neighbors. In math, we call this
adjacent. They share a common ray and vertex.

On your worksheet do the following:
1. Label the third one: Alternate Interior & Alternate Exterior
Angles
• we are going to color code
these angles as well
• What is the definition of
interior and exterior
More Definitions:
Exterior Angles:
angles on the outside of the two lines 1 5
2 6
Interior Angles:
3 7
angles on the inside of the two lines 4 8

Alternate Interior Angles:
pairs of angles on opposite side of the transversal 1 5
but on the inside of the two lines 2 6
3 7
4 8
Alternate exterior Angles:
pairs of angles on opposite side of the transversal
but on the outside of the two lines
Supplementary Angles:
When angles sum to 180o
Consecutive (Same Side) Interior Angles: 1 5
2 6

Vertical Angles:
are angles opposite each other when two lines intersect
They are called "Vertical" because they share the same
Vertex (corner point)

Summary
• Parallel lines are lines that never meet.
• Perpendicular lines meet at right angles.
• A transversal is a line that intersects 2 or more lines.
• Parallel lines cut by a transversal form 8 angles.
• Pairs of angles will be either congruent or supplementary.
• Special pairs of angles will be congruent.
• Vertical angles
• Corresponding angles
• Alternate Interior Angles
