Hidden Hearts

Objective: Students will determine the number of candy hearts left in the box. Materials Candy hearts page Candy Box page Various colored construction paper Small plastic baggies *Note- real candy and boxes can be used for added fun! Preparations ! Run copies of the candy hearts page on construction paper; cut apart and store in individual baggies for each student (determine the number of hearts in each baggie based on your students level) ! Run copies of the candy boxes, 1 per student Procedure 1. Distribute a candy hearts baggie and box to each student. 2. Model the activity as a whole class using the Elmo. Display the candy box. Explain to the students that they are going to have to determine how many candy hearts are left in the box after some are eaten. 3. Have a student volunteer count out 5 hearts and place them under the box so they are out of sight. 4. Now ask another volunteer to reach under the box and remove some of the candy hearts (be sure some are left under the box) without the rest of the class seeing how many. 5. Count how many hearts were taken or eaten from the box. 6. Lead a class discussion in how they can determine how many hearts are left in the box. (i.e., subtract the total number of hearts eaten from the number of total hearts) 7. Use one of their strategies to determine the number of hearts still in the box. Lift off the box to reveal the remaining hearts. 8. Continue to model as necessary, using larger numbers. Once the students have a grasp of how to determine the number of hidden hearts, allow them to work with a partner. Each student takes turns giving their partner a different problem to solve.
