MobEyes: Smart Mobs for Urban Monitoring with Vehicular Sensor Networks
AbstractVehicular sensor networks are emerging as a newnetwork paradigm of primary relevance, especially for proactivelygathering monitoring information in urban environments(proactive urban monitoring). Each vehicle, which typically hasno strict constrai nts on processing power and storage capabilities, can sense one or more events (e.g., imaging from streets anddetecting toxic chemicals), process sensed data (e.g., recognizinglicense plates) and route messages to other vehicles (e.g., diffusingrelevant notification to d rivers or police agents). In this novel andchallenging mobile environment, sensors can generate a sheeramount of data, and traditional sensor network approaches fordata reporting become infeasible. This paper proposes MobEyes,an efficient lightweight support for proactive urban monitoringbased on the primary idea of exploiting vehicle mobility toopportunistically diffuse concise summaries describing senseddata. MobEyes harvests these summaries and builds a lowcostdistributed index of the autonomous mobile storage ofsensed data. The re ported experimental/analytic results showthat MobEyes-based indexing can achieve reasonable completenesswith good scalability and limited overhead in completelydecentralized deployment scenarios.
