FUTUROLOGY & EDUCATION


FUTUROLOGY:  Futurology is the study of postulating possible, probable & preferable future & the worldviews & myths that underline them. There is a debate as to whether this discipline is an art or science. In general, it can be consider as a branch under the more general scope of the field of history. Futures studies seeks to understand what is likely to continue, what is likely to change, & what is novel.

 Part of discipline thus seeks a systematic & pattern-based understanding of past & present & to determine the likelihood of future events & trends. Unlike science where a narrower, more specified system is studied, futurology studies a much bigger & more complex world system. The methodology & knowledge are less proven as compared to natural science or even social sciences like sociology, economics & political sciences.

FUTUROLOGY
 Futurology is interdisciplinary field, studying yesterday s & today changes & aggregating & analyzing both lay & professional strategies & opinions with respect to tomorrow. It includes analyzing the source, pattern, causes of change & stability in an attempt to develop foresight & to map possible futures. Around the world the field is variously referred to as futures studies, strategic foresight ,futuristic, futures thinking or futuring.

EDUCATION
Education is in the field of future studies has taken place for sometime. Beginning in the USA in the 1960 s. it has since developed in many different countries. Future Education can encourage the use of concepts, tools,& processes that allow students to think long time consequentially, & imaginatively. It generally helps students to;

1. Conceptualize more just & sustainable human & planetary futures. 2. Develop knowledge & skills in exploring probable & preferred futures. 3. Understand the dynamics & influence that human, social & ecological systems have on alternative futures. 4. Conscientize responsibility & action on the part of students towards creating better futures.

 While future students remains a relatively new academic tradition, numerous tertiary institutions around the world teach it.  These vary from small programs or universities with just one or two classes, to programs that incorporate futurology in to other degrees.

THE FUTURE OF EDUCATION FUTURE STUDIES & THEIR IMPLICATION FOR EDUCATION
 The future of education will be a Customized, Connected, Amplified, Authentic, Resilient & relevant world of learning.  It is tough to make predictions, especially about the future studies.  One of the major roles of education is to prepare students for life in the next century, an awareness of these trends by educators & policy makers is essential if our educational system is to achieve its objectives.

A RADICALLY DIFFERENT WORLD


 IF WE THINK our future will require better schools, WE RE WRONG. The future of education calls for entirely new kinds of learning environments.  IF WE THINK we will need better teachers, WE RE WRONG. Tomorrow learners will need guides who take on fundamentally different roles.

As every dimension of our world evolves so rapidly challenges, the education challenges of tomorrow will require solutions that go for beyond today s answer. It involves many aspects e.g

Our movements in the world create new kinds of data. Our community will have the tools & knowledge to produce customs goods. Our sense of community & our own identity are changing in a global society. System will suffer from increasing shocks. Our organization will be amplified by a new generation of connected, innovative people. We can alter our mind & body in ways we never imagined.

CURRENT REALITIES
1. We live in a world in which the salary gap between the highest and lowest skilled workers in our society is increasing. 2. In the current information/communications age it is appropriate to explore the information technology. 3. The digital divide is real, & the financial have-nots are the informational have-nots. Given the importance of information technologies in the future, this gap can produce a permanent underclass & further expand the gap between the have & havenots. 4. The continued downsizing of large corporations.

The skills needed to thrive in small dynamic companies are different from those typically associated with corporate giants. Again, it falls to our educational institutions to prepare students for this new world.

EMERGENT TRENDS
Against the start background of today s realities, several strong trends stand out. Many of these trends are interrelated &their combination has produced a positive feedback loop of tremendous proportions.

FEW CURRET TRENDS ARE


   
Rapid increase in the growth of information. Collapse of the information float. Increasingly global market place. Computers continue to increase in power while dropping in cost.  Computer chips continue to follow Moore s Law.  Network power continues to obey Metcalfe s Law.

 Education must focus on new competencies.  Technological fluency is a basic skill.  Education must prepare students for jobs that have yet to be invented.  Compact portable technologies facilitate anywhere\anytime life long learning.  Band with is becoming free.

THE ROLE OF A TEACHER


Teachers have a multifaceted job. Teaching may seem easy, with its extended vacation times, moderate hours, salaried pay and seemingly easy task of relaying information to kids. However, many who have tried and found it daunting will tell you the job takes someone with stamina, organization and a passion for teaching to succeed.

When we speak of good teachers it means that a teacher must be a model of faith and piety and should have a fairly good knowledge . A teacher should consider it his duty to educate and train his students and should feel responsible for it. He should feel that his students have been entrusted to him and he should avoid any breach of the trust the society has reposed in him. He should be a sociable person with his roots in the society. People should take him as their well-wisher and a sincere friend who cares for their children. It should be ascertained at all cost that a candidate for this profession has a natural acumen and aptitude for teaching.

Teacher in role is a method of teaching that utilizes techniques to facilitate education. It is a holistic teaching method designed to integrate critical thought, examination of emotion and moral values and factual data to broaden the learning experience and make it more relevant to everyday life situations. If the role of a teacher is to teach, the role of a student must be to learn. However, it has been agreed that learning is not only an exercise in reading and reciting facts, but in gaining a deeper insight of events and situations. This is where a teacher does not only teach and learn the what but also the why and how.

TODAY WE NEED THE FOLLOWING GOOD QUALITIES IN TEACHER


 Coach and Facilitator
Teachers no longer simply relay information for rote memorization. Today's teacher is a learning coach or facilitator who provides the hands-on active learning resources and motivation wherein students learn without even realizing it.

 Secondary Roles
Students need social and psychological guidance as much as they need academic guidance in order to be successful. The teacher finds herself in the role of social worker, counselor, nurse, mentor and substitute parent when the need arises.

 Lesson Planner
Creativity and the ability to ferret out resources that engage students in learning are invaluable skills in the role of teacher. Lesson and activity planning consumes an enormous amount of the teacher's time away from her students.

 Academic Assessor
The teacher also plays the role of chief assessor of academic progress. He must always be up to task concerning where a student is on the learning curve and how far he must endeavor to take the student that year.

 Learning Obstacles
The teacher must also assess any issues standing in the way of progress. Psychological, physical or learning difficulties that stand in the way of academic progress must be documented for assessment by specialists in these areas.

An Architect
The importance of a teacher as an architect of our future generations demands that only the best and the most intelligent and competent members of our intelligentsia be allowed to qualify for this noble profession.

Some Important Things To Be Noted


It is unfortunate to find that generally the worst and the most incapable people of the society find their way into this profession. Anyone who fails to find an opening in any other walk of life, gets into this profession and recklessly plays with the destiny of the nation. An important reason for this is understood to be the poor salaries of our primary and secondary teachers which are no better than that of clerks. A large number of our teachers is , therefore, frustrated and disinterested.

They have to go for part-time jobs to meet their basic needs. Again, the teaching profession also does not enjoy due respect in the society. The primary and secondary teachers are particularly at a disadvantage. Their status is lower than that of doctors, engineers, advocates, civil servants; even lower than that of semi literate and illiterate traders. It would therefore require great commitment for an intelligent individual, however fond of education and training he may be, to forsake the career of a doctor or engineer in favor of teaching. Therefore, while selecting good teachers, it must be borne in mind that better opportunities, prospects and perks are offered to the teachers.

He should be proud of his culture, his national dress and his national language. He should be a missionary, a mentor, a reformer and a guide besides being a dedicated tutor. In other words, he should be a perfect teacher and a perfect educationist

Whatever time they have at their disposal is consumed by newspapers, television and other recreations. As a result, the younger generation hardly gets any opportunity to share ideas with their elders or to enter into a meaningful discussion

He should actively participate in the social activities in a positive way. He should know the art of teaching with a deep insight into child psychology. He should always deal with the students in a just manner. He should not lose his self-control on mistakes his students may commit, and instead he should respect their feelings and ego, and should try to understand and resolve their difficulties with grace while keeping his cool. He should be able to smile in the face of bitter criticism on his opinions, and should not feel ashamed or humiliated to accept his mistakes wholeheartedly.

He can lead student anywhere. During their early education, the students tend to determine their aims in life and their future plans, in consultation with their teachers.

A good and visionary teacher can play a prominent role in making the future of his students while as a corrupt teacher can only harm his students much more seriously than a class of corrupt and perverted judiciary, army, police, bureaucracy, politicians or technocrats. A corrupt and incompetent teacher in not only a bad individual, but also an embodiment of a corrupt and incompetent generation. A nation with corrupt teachers is a nation at risk; every coming day announces the advent of its approaching destruction
