WHAT IS A STAR NETWORK TOPOLOGY?

What Is a Star Network Topology?

A star network is a local area network (LAN) in which all nodes are directly connected to a common central computer.

Every workstation is indirectly connected to every other through the central computer.

In some star networks, the central computer can also operate as a workstation.

Star Network

ADVANTAGES

Better performance
The star topology prevents the passing of data packets through an excessive number of nodes

Isolation of devices
Each device is inherently isolated by the link that connects it to the hub.

Isolation of devices
This makes the isolation of individual devices straightforward and amounts to disconnecting each device from the others.

Isolation of devices
This isolation also prevents any noncentralized failure from affecting the network.

Centralization
As the central hub is the bottleneck, increasing its capacity, or connecting additional devices to it, increases the size of the network very easily.

Centralization
Centralization also allows the inspection of traffic through the network. This facilitates analysis of the traffic and detection of suspicious behavior.

Simplicity
This topology is easy to understand, establish, and navigate

Star Network

DISADVANTAGES

The primary disadvantage of a star topology is the high dependence of the system on the functioning of the central hub

In a star network, a cable failure will isolate the workstation that it links to the central computer, but only that workstation will be isolated.

All the other workstations will continue to function normally

But if the central computer goes down, the entire network will suffer degraded performance or complete failure.

If redundancy is required, the mesh network topology may be preferable.
