Modelling of Language Situations by Means of Manipulating with Terms and Notions


In order to veil, the asimilationist policy, conducted in the Soviet Union, Russian-language
publications in the period of the Communist rule propoesed the term the
second native language, referring to Russian for all non-Russians living in that state. It is
notewrothy that, notwithstanding some minor exceptions, the said coinage seems bezarre to none of
the Russian-language authors. What is salient here, is not only the political underpinning (apology
of Russification), but a cognitive factor which, against their will, unveils the ture essence of those
statements. When writing about the so called second native language, Russian-language authors try
to present the notion, rendered by means of this term, as an axiomatic entity, that is, they model
the language situation by way of manipulating with terms and notions.
It is notewrothy that, among Russian-language authors, V. Avrorin belongs to those rare
exceptions who try to address the problem in a scholarly way. He does not view the above
mentioned collocation as a term and considers it a metaphor. And yet, what, for Russian-language
Avrorin, is, if not a term, but a metaphor in the language of poetry and journalism, in any text,
written in an elevated ceremonial style, is absolutely incompatible with the conceptual system of
Georgian. Leaving aside poliical motives, the reason should be sought in the non-occurrence in
Russian of the conceptual metaphor like mother tongue. As a matter of fact, when E. Polivanov
deals with the problems of mother tongue, and he does it in Russian, he is obliged to do it in the
following way: It does not happen in vain that, in order to denote a true native language, the
linguistic tradition widely uses the term Muttersprache (and not Vatersprache). The literal
translation of the Russian term in question *the second native language direct us to *meore
dedaena (*second mother tongue), which, as already noted, in no wat comforts with the conceptual
system of Georgian.
The paper addresses statements by numerous authors, dealing with the said issue, and highlights
the fact that language situations may become a subject to modeling not only by way of certain
legislative and administrative activities, but also by means of giving way to a discource of
appropriate content, irrespective of the fact how adequate its product is going to be with the existing
reality.
