and laminated. The finished gels have absorbent properties and can absorb water or saline to become lubricious. They can also be used to stabilize emulsions and, in the Chitosan formulations, add the conditioning and therapeutic benefits of Chitosan to the finished product.

Aquatrix II hydrogels are manufactured as two separate, water-based solutions, one containing PVP and one containing Chitosan or Polyethyleneimine. The solutions are mixed together and the gel forms over a period of time ranging from a few seconds to a few minutes, depending on formulation. Aquatrix II hydrogels can accept a wide range of active ingredients soluble in water, glycerol, or glycol. Ingredients that are soluble in alcohol or oil may also be used with slight formulation modifications. Active ingredients can be incorporated into the formulation prior to forming the gel, so that they will be evenly dispersed in the gel matrix and released over time. The gel formulations are versatile and their physical properties can be modified to suit a variety of applications. Physical properties that are typically modified for customers are tack level, gel strength, and gel time. The tack level changes between formulations, and can be increased or decreased to suit a particular application. Aquatrix II hydrogels are often used as bioadhesives, since they can be applied to and removed from the skin without irritation or residue. The unique chemistry of the Aquatrix II hydrogels allow them to be processed in many ways, such as molding the gel into a shape or applying it between films as a laminate. Examples of uses for laminated are as facial masks for delivering cosmetic actives or sports wraps to reduce swelling. Aquatrix II hydrogels are viscoelastic materials, and gel strengths are different for each formulation. Higher % solids formulations yield stiffer, more elastic gels, while varying the ratio of PVP to Chitosan or PEI changes the gel strength and gel time.

Shine and Gloss: A class of Aquamere polymer, Aquamere S- Series contains a unique silicone copolymer of PVP/Dimethiconylacrylate, which improves the lubricity of formulations and adds shine to hair care products. It also has good spreading properties, which assist in the formation of coherent, continuous films. When used in shampoos, conditioners, mousses and gels, the polymer evenly coats the hair. The higher the silicone content, the greater the lubricity or shine. When used in lipsticks it imparts to the consumer a perceivable and desirable increase in gloss. It is ideal for sandproofing sun care products and reduction tack in lotions in addition to helping retain water-phase UVA absorbers and inorganic pigments, like Ti02 and Zn0. Rheology Modifier: Aquamere ingredients act like rheology modifiers in cosmetic formulations. In contrast to other modifiers, the viscosity in the end use formulation is not dependent on pH. The viscosity of the final formulation depends, however, on the interaction of the polymer hydrophobes with specific moieties present in the formulation. This property adds body and richness to skin lotions, hold and moisture resistance to hair care products. Depending on the specific Aquamere series, these formulations impart different degrees of viscosity changes.

the water phase. Aquamere polymers possess excellent spread properties, which assist in forming coherent, continuous films.

Water Resistance: Aquamere film forming properties and affinity to skin provides water resistance from the water phase to cosmetic formulations. This is the most important property in sun care products when claims of water resistance are desirable. Water resistance of these film forming class of polymers is shown below.

DERMASEAL
allergenblocker

Product Description

Properties

The Dermaseal allergenblocker polymer system is comprised of a patented synergistic combination of biocompatible, naturally derived ingredients, which form a thin, continuous film on skin. Dermaseal allergen-blocker was developed by Hydromer Inc. for use in lotions, creams,

Dermaseal allergen-blocker is a moisturizing polymer system providing an invisible film, tack free, flexible, non-greasy, non-oily feel, and easily incorporated in cream and lotions. The films exhibit a gloss or sheen, identifying their presence. For many individuals, contact with common environmental allergen results in blemished, irritated and inflamed skin. A number of materials encountered on a daily basis produce such reactions. These include cosmetic products, jewelry, poisonous plants, latex gloves, detergents or industrial chemicals. Sensitive individuals benefit from a cream or lotion that provides the skin with a shield or barrier against these common environmental irritants.

Performance Characteristics

Dermaseal allergen-blocker has been developed to serve as a barrier for skin to common irritants. Upon contact with the skin, allergens promote an immune response resulting in visible skin irritation. In order to examine its potential effectiveness as a barrier, Dermaseal allergen-blocker has been tested using Attenuated Total Reflectance Infrared Spectroscopy (ATR-IR). The technique (illustrated below), measure the rate of permeation of an allergen or other irritant through the barrier film. Upon passage through the film layer, irritants are detected using infrared radiation. Using the ATR-IR technique, films of several currently marketed products, which claim skin protection and several formulations developed in the laboratory including Dermaseal were examined for permeability to the following known irritants Disulfides (Benzyl disulfide) Detergents (Sodium Lauryl Sulfate) Rubber Constituents (1,4 Phenylenediamine) Plant Derivatives (Catechol) Differences in breakthrough times (or protection) through films of the above formulations were noted for each irritant. For the plant irritant, protection times ranged from 0.5 hr for commercial products A to C claiming Poison Ivy protection from 2-4 hrs for laboratory formulations and greater than 8 hrs for Dermaseal allergen-blocker. These barrier compounds were put into a lotion form and tested on volunteers in a clinical environment. The ATR-IR results indicated barrier performance protection for 6 hours or more against the common irritants listed in the lotions that contained 50% Dermaseal base material.
