3D

What is 3D?
3D means three-dimensional, i.e. something that has width, height and depth (length) Our physical environment is threedimensional and we move around in 3D every day

The pupils of a person s eye are about 6.5 cm (about 2.5 ) apart, each eye views a scene from a different angle and generates a unique image. As we look around, the retina in each eye forms a two-dimensional image of our surroundings and our brain processes these two images into a 3D visual experience.

What is a 3D Display?

A 3D display is any display device capable of conveying a perception of 3-D depth to the viewer

What is 3D actually??
It is just a stereoscopic vision

Stereoscopic Vision
Two eyes provide slightly separate images Images received by the left and the right eyes are 2-D offset images. They are combined in brain to give the perception of 3-D depth Closer objects appear more separated than distant ones.

3D FILMS

HOW TO WATCH THEM??

Anaglyphic processing (red/cyan glasses): The original 3D system, now largely out of favour

HOW TO WATCH THEM??

Polarized light system (polarized filter glasses): The most common new system for cinemas

HOW TO WATCH THEM??

Active shutter system (LCD shutter glasses): The most likely standard for the first generation of 3D televisions and other displays

New systems without glasses

There is increasing emergence of new 3-D viewing systems which do not require the use of special viewing glasses These systems are referred to as Autostereoscopic displays

The Autostereoscopic LCD displays first appeared on the Sharp Actius RD3D notebook in 2004 The first Autostereoscopic mobile phone was launched by Hitachi in 2009 in Japan and in 2011 China mobile is to launch its version For the gaming market the first probable commercial application will be handheld gaming devices, such as the Nintendo 3DS

LIMITATIONS
3D violates the normal rules of perception because the normal pattern in the brain is significantly altered Can lead to headaches, blurry vision and an overall exhausted feeling on overexposure to it Cost is quite high

CLOSING THOUGHTS
Though 3D used in todays technology has both advantages and limitations, this technology is a path breaking invention because it has revolutionized the way of viewing
