SUBJECT: Delayed implementation of extended parking hours downtown ________________________________________________________________ The Austin Transportation Department is currently working toward implementation of extended parking hours as directed by Council. Implementation of the parking hours was originally scheduled to begin August 1, 2011; however, due to unavoidable delays in obtaining some of the necessary equipment, the implementation of downtown extended hours will be delayed until Tuesday, September 6, 2011. A new yellow button will be installed on all downtown pay stations enabling citizens to purchase parking meter hours into the next day. This capability is being added in order to give citizens who need to park overnight the option of paying for additional hours the next day to avoid citations. The equipment has been purchased but is arriving late from the manufacturing site and will not be in Austin until the second week of July. Delaying implementation will provide staff with sufficient time to re-program the pay stations, install new buttons, and properly test the software.
