AS a golf professional who played golf throughout college, played professionally for several years and went on to make a career out of golf, it was nearly unthinkable to take a vacation that included the four letter word which had consumed our lives. So when my gorgeous wife Amy, came to me with the idea of a golf getaway for just the two of us, it was almost too good to be true. Our lives have changed dramatically over the past several years. I have moved into Resort management, Amy has a thriving photography business and we have three beautiful little girls at home. We rarely have time to think, let alone spend some time together. The thought of planning a vacation is daunting and the reality is that we cannot set up the logistics for more than a few days. Having moved to the Baja over a year ago, we have not had the chance to travel around and see the beauty of this magical land. So we took the plunge and headed out on a three day journey around the southern tip of the Baja that we have since dubbed The Baja Golf Trail and we returned with memories of a lifetime. SIENDO un golfista que jugu durante toda la universidad,
luego de forma profesional por varios aos hasta realizar una carrera como tal, era casi impensable que tomara unas vacaciones que incluyeran esa palabra de cuatro letras que casi consuma nuestras vidas. As que cuando mi hermosa esposa Amy me propuso la idea de un retiro de golf para nosotros dos, pareca demasiado bueno para ser verdad. Ahora estoy dentro del mbito administrativo de los resorts, Amy maneja un prspero negocio de fotografa y juntos tenemos a tres hermosas hijas. Rara vez tenemos tiempo para pensar y pasar un tiempo a solas. El planear unas vacaciones es abrumador, y la realidad es que no tenemos la capacidad logstica para hacerlo ms de un par de das. Habindonos mudado a la Baja hace un ao, no hemos tenido la oportunidad de viajar a travs de ella y conocer las bellezas de sta mgica tierra. As que nos aventuramos en un viaje de tres das por el Sur de Baja, al cual sin duda hemos llamado El Camino de Golf de Baja, del cual volvimos con recuerdos para toda la vida.

GOLF

The goal of our trip was simple, spend some time together as a couple, experience the beauty of the Baja as it was meant to be seen, eat some amazing food and, yes, play some golf along the way. Setting out from Cabo San Lucas mid morning on Thursday we began our adventure up Mexico 1 toward the Bay of Dreams or Bahia de Los Sueos. Perhaps nowhere in the world will you find a better collection of golf courses in such a perfect setting. With almost all of the courses playing along or with views of the Sea of Cortez, Cabo is guaranteed to satisfy all of your golf desires. Each course offers a desert golf feel mixed with the seaside look found only in a few locations worldwide. While it is possible to spend a week playing just the courses around Cabo, this trip was about exploration in addition to golf and thus we continued on with our appetite whet for what lay ahead. The drive north was great. Rigid mountains and desert landscape are broken up regularly by the most spectacular aqua clear water of the coastal villages. You can truly get a sense and feel for the Baja prior to any civilization. The towns are unique, the landscape amazing and, as our good friend told us, stay on the pavement and you wont get lost. He was correct. When the road turned to dirt we had arrived! The Bay of Dreams is straight out of an island fantasy. Having grown up in the cold, snowy, harsh winters of Vermont, you would often think about being on an island with the crystal clear water rolling to the shore, couple of chairs, an umbrella and a bucket of beer. When we pulled through the gates of the Gran Sueo Resort we had it all except the bucket of beer was substituted for a couple of ice cold margaritasoh well. The Gran Sueo is a private oasis created by the legendary real estate icon Steve Games. As if it is his own private playground, the resort has several different unique homes that can be shared by a couple, family or a group of friends. Mark Azoff and his staff treat you like family and we felt like we had left the world behind and escaped into our own universe.

La meta de nuestro viaje es sencilla: pasar un tiempo juntos como pareja, experimentar la belleza de Baja como debe ser, comer delicioso y claro, jugar golf en nuestro trayecto. Salimos de Cabo San Lucas un jueves por la maana a travs de la carretera y hacia Baha de los Sueos. Tal vez en ningn otro lugar del mundo encontrar una mejor coleccin de campos de golf en un ambiente tan perfecto. Con casi todos los campos a un lado, o con vistas del Mar de Corts, es seguro que Cabo complacer todos sus deseos de golf. Cada campo ofrece una sensacin desrtica compartida con vistas al mar, lo cual es muy raro en todo el mundo. Aunque es probable que se pase tan solo una semana jugando en los campos de Los Cabos, este viaje era de exploracin, adems de jugar, por lo que continuamos con un inmenso apetito por lo que nos esperaba. El viaje hacia el norte fue genial. Rgidas montaas y un panorama desrtico con espacios donde puede apreciar las ms espectaculares vistas al mar desde las comunidades costeras. Se puede dar cuenta de cmo era el rea antes de tantos cambios. Los pueblos son nicos, las vistas increbles y tal como un buen amigo nos dijo, vayan por el pavimento y no se perdern. Estaba en lo correcto. Cuando el camino se volvi terracera, Habamos llegado! Pareciera que Baha de los Sueos sali directo de una isla de fantasa. Habiendo crecido en el fro y nevado invierno de Vermont, en ocasiones uno suea con estar en una isla de agua cristalina, un par de sillas, sombrilla y unas cervezas. Cuando llegamos a Gran Sueo Resort lo tuvimos todo, excepto la cerveza, ya que fue sustituida por margaritas fras. The Gran Sueo es un oasis privado creado por el legendario cono inmobiliario Steve Games. Como si fuera su jardn privado, el resort tiene diferentes hogares nicos que pueden ser compartidos por una pareja, familia o grupo de amigos. Mark Azoff y su personal lo tratan como familia, por lo que sentimos que dejamos nuestro mundo atrs y escapamos a nuestro propio universo.

We dove into the water, swam out to a floating raft and took it all in. The relaxation ran through our bodies and Amy said, This must be a top five Bennett moment Life was good. With an afternoon tee time set we headed back to our villa and geared up for some golf. Having seen the golf course as we drove in, I knew we were in for a treat. Loading up our bags from the Beach Club we were escorted out along the coast line to the first tee where I quickly realized that we were one of just two groups playing that day. I couldnt stop smiling and Amy couldnt resist snapping pictures. It was breathtaking. In the spirit of the moment I made the decision that I was going to tee it up barefoot as if I had just come from the beach and was heading to play. I put the peg in the ground and ripped one down the fairway, it was awesome. Following an even par start through six holes, Amy said I should put my shoes on so people were not confused in the pictures I am still not sure golf shoes are really needed but my golf game was not as good once my shoes were laced. The course is masterfully designed and blends into the dunes perfectly. The grass is cut to fairway length throughout and the tee boxes roll from one to the next with subtle mounding. I am not sure if I enjoyed the course more as a golfer or if Amy enjoyed the course more as a photographer but we would both rank this as one of the best golf experiences of our lives. We were free to play the course at the pace we pleased (ended up taking 2.5 hours) and the way we wanted. I found the course challenging and rewarding with a mixture of different shot requirements. The beauty is unparalleled and the company was superb. While I must admit it was difficult to pack up the next day and leave the Gran Sueo (recommend staying a few days), we packed up and headed North to La Paz. Within an hour we had arrived to the outskirts of the city. We hit the water and headed right along the bay passing Pedregal de La Paz to Costa Baja.

Nos sumergimos en el agua, nadamos a una balsa flotante y nos dejamos ir. La relajacin corri por nuestras venas y Amy dijo: Este debe ser uno de los mejores momentos de los Bennett. Con una ronda de golf esperndonos por la tarde, nos dirigimos a la villa para prepararnos. Habiendo visto el campo cuando llegamos, sabamos que nos esperaba un verdadero placer. Cargando nuestras bolsas, desde el Club de Playa fuimos escoltados alrededor de la costa al campo donde rpidamente me di cuenta de que ramos slo uno de dos grupos jugando ese da. No poda resistir el sonrer, tanto como Amy no poda resistirse a tomar fotos, era arrebatador. En la excitacin del momento decid que empezara descalzo, ya que vena de la playa. Coloqu la pelota sobre el tee y di un excelente golpe dejando la bola bien posicionada. Fue genial. Teniendo una excelente racha de par en los siguientes seis hoyos, Amy dijo que debera ponerme los zapatos para que las personas no se confundieran en las fotos an no estoy convencido si los zapatos de golf son realmente necesarios pero mi juego no fue tan bueno una vez que me los puse. El campo esta magistralmente diseado y se mezcla con las dunas de forma perfecta. El pasto esta podado a la altura perfecta y las salidas van de una a otra acoplndose perfectamente. No estoy seguro si yo lo disfrute ms como un golfista o Amy como fotgrafa, pero ambos lo calificamos como uno de las mejores experiencias de golf de nuestras vidas. Estbamos libres de jugar a nuestro propio ritmo (lo cual tom 2.5 horas) y de la forma que quisiramos. Encontr el campo retador y gratificante con una mezcla de diversos tipos de tiro. La belleza es sin igual y la compaa suprema. Aunque debo reconocer que fue difcil empacar al siguiente da y dejar el Gran Sueo (recomendamos quedarse varios das), nos dirigimos al norte, a La Paz. A la hora, habamos llegado a las afueras de la ciudad. Llegamos al malecn y nos dirigimos directo, pasando Pedregal de La Paz, hasta Costa Baja.

Costa Baja is in contrast to Bahia de los Sueos, but spectacular in its own way. While Bahia de los Suenos is more of a throwback, Costa Baja is a modern day golf course with breathtaking elevation changes and vistas. Climbing up into the mountains, there are many shots where you tee off with the Sea of Cortez as the background. Your ball seems to float into the blue abyss, depending on how well it is hit until reaching the perfectly manicured grasses below. Gary Player did a fabulous job of accommodating all skills by placing a variety of tee boxes on each hole. And his routing truly took advantage of the best pieces of land. Now, what I have not told you to this point is that Amy, when motivated, is one of the most talented golfers that I have seen. Although I may be a bit biased, she has a beautiful swing and as a former US Ski Team member, her athleticism is unmatched. So when she told me that she was ready to play and wanted a match, I knew we were in for a great day. The game was simple, Amy gets a shot a hole and when she hits the green she has a choice, take an automatic two putt or play it out to completion. The whole idea was to make the game fun and for us to have a little friendly competition. So when she drove the 270 yard Par 4 sixth hole and had to choose between an automatic birdie three of a chance to make an eagle two, Amy went for the eagle and walked away with the win. Ultimately, the course played perfectly for us both. From the back tees it is a challenge and demanding course but from the forward tees Amy stated Gary Player must really love women because she had shots that she could handle and it kept her in the game. By the 17th hole Amy was one up on me with two to play and when she knocked a gorgeous looking 6 iron to 15 feet, she picked up, took her par and the victory! La Paz truly has a world class golf course to be proud of.

Costa Baja es diferente a Baha de los Sueos, pero espectacular en s. Mientras que Baha de los Sueos es ms para relajarse, Costa Baja es un campo de golf moderno con maravillosos elevaciones y vistas. Al subir las montaas, hay muchos puntos para empezar con el Mar de Cortez como fondo. Pareciera que tu pelota flota sobre el inmenso azul, dependiendo de que tan bien fue golpeada, hasta que cae al pasto perfectamente mantenido. Gary Player realiz un excelente trabajo al hbilmente acomodar cada salida. Y su ruta realmente tom ventaja de las mejores reas. Ahora, lo que no les he dicho es que Amy, cuando est motivada, es una de las ms talentosas golfistas que haya visto. Aunque puedo ser un poco imparcial, tiene un muy buen swing y como una talentosa ex-miembro del equipo americano de Ski, su atletismo es sin igual. Cuando me dijo que estaba lista para jugar y competir, saba que nos esperaba un grandioso da. El juego fue simple, Amy tiene un tiro por hoyo y cuando se sube al Green tiene la opcin de levantar la pelota y contar dos putts, o jugar el hoyo. La idea era hacerlo divertido y amigablemente competitivo. Cuando jug el Par 4 de 270 yardas y lleg al Green de ste siendo el hoyo 6, tuvo que elegir entre levantar la pelota y hacer un birdie automtico, o jugar el hoyo para hacer guila: Amy decidi arriesgarse con el guila y gan. El campo fue perfecto para nosotros. Desde las salidas de atrs, es un campo retador y demandante, mientras que de salidas de enfrente Amy comenta Gary Player realmente debe amar a las mujeres porque tuvo tiros que pudo manejar y la mantuvieron en el juego. Llegando al hoyo 17 Amy iba uno arriba en la competencia y cuando tir un precioso 6 de fierro dejando la pelota a 5 yardas, recogi la pelota, se qued con su par y se llev la victoria. La Paz realmente tiene un campo de golf del cual puede estar orgullosa.

As we sat at a dinner that evening, we realized that this little journey through the Baja was incredible on so many levels. We were truly reconnecting as a couple, we were experiencing an amazing land and culture together and we were enjoying a great game in our own way on our own level. This is what a golf getaway should be. The following morning we set off for Cabo but not before a perfectly timed lunch in Todos Santos where we fueled up for the last round of the Baja Trail at Diamante. Situated on the Pacific side just to the North of Cabo, Diamante would bring our experience full circle, literally. Designed by the newly appointed US Ryder Cup Captain, Davis Love III and his team, Diamante is a wonderful links style layout that blends in perfectly to the Pacific Dunes that surround the land. So, we landed on the driving range and were meet by the smell of smoldering slider burgers and sound of rock music cranking from the speakers setting the tone for the day. The course is beautifully laid out to accommodate the prevailing Pacific breeze. Golfers are forced to play a variety of shots and control the trajectory of the ball. The front nine plays through the dunes and you are teased with views of the Pacific that highlight the 15th, 16th and 17th holes. Most importantly to us, Diamante blends a perfect mixture of golf with world class service and hospitality. Comfort Stations on every 6 holes offer anything from Tortilla soup to pineapple tamales, fruits, candies, and drinks galore It is certainly not hard to forget the last bad shot when you are met with a smiling face and an ice cold Corona yes please! We truly felt comfortable at the Comfort Stations. By the time we had reached the 17th tee, golf had become secondary. The golf course, the beauty of the land, the service and the comfort where capped off by a perfectly poured Diamante water (turns out to be a mixture of rum, vodka, pineapple and Fresca) on the Pacific Beach. Diamante is more than just golf, it is a true experience. With just a 15 minute drive home, Amy and I reminisced about our couple of days together, which felt like a weeks vacation. We had done it all and satisfied all of our desires. I can confidently say that the Baja offers the most unique landscape, some of the best golf courses in the world and when combined with the people that you love, it can create some of the most memorable experiences. We have already begun to plan our next vacacines and there is no doubt that it will include the same elements as this trip. So why not give the Baja Golf Trail a try? I can promise that you will love every minute. And oh by the way you never have to ask about rain checks.

Mientras cenabamos ese da, nos dimos cuenta que este pequeo viaje a travs de Baja era increble en varios niveles. Realmente nos estbamos reconectando como pareja, experimentbamos una hermosa tierra y cultura juntos y estbamos disfrutando de un gran juego a nuestro modo y nivel. Esto es lo que un retiro de golf debera de ser. La siguiente maana nos dirigimos hacia Cabo pero no sin antes disfrutar de un almuerzo en Todos Santos, donde recargamos batera para la ltima jornada del Camino de Golf en Baja, en Diamante. Del lado del Pacfico al norte de Cabo, Diamante completara nuestra experiencia, literalmente. Diseado por el nuevo Capitn de US Ryder Cup, Davis Love III y su equipo, Diamante es un hermoso campo con hoyos que se relacionan y mimetizan en perfeccin con las dunas del Pacfico que rodean la tierra. As que llegamos al campo de prctica y nos recibi el delicioso olor a hamburguesas y el sonido de msica rock, lo cual defini el tono del da. El campo esta puesto para acomodar las brisas del Pacfico. Los golfistas deben jugar una variedad de tiros y controlar la trayectoria de la pelota. Los primeros nueve se juegan a travs de una duna mientras que uno es seducido por las vistas al Pacfico que destacan los hoyos 15, 16 y 17. Lo ms importante para nosotros, Diamante combina perfectamente una mezcla de golf con servicio y hospitalidad de clase mundial. Estaciones de Confort cada 6 hoyos ofrecen desde sopa de tortilla hasta tamales de pia, frutas, dulces y bebidas en abundancia ciertamente no es difcil olvidar el ltimo mal tiro cuando lo reciben con una sonrisa y una Corona helada Si por favor! realmente nos sentimos cmodos en las Estaciones de Confort. Para cuando llegamos al tee 17, el golf se volvi secundario. El campo de golf, la belleza de la tierra, el servicio y la comodidad culminaron perfectamente con agua Diamante (que es una mezcla de ron, vodka, pia y refresco) en la playa del Pacfico. Diamante es ms que golf, es una verdadera experiencia. A tan slo 15 minutos de nuestra casa, Amy y yo recordamos los ltimos dos das juntos, los cuales se sintieron como unas vacaciones de una semana. Lo hicimos todo y complacimos nuestros deseos. Con confianza puedo decir que la Baja ofrece el paisaje ms singular y algunos de los mejores campos de golf en el mundo, los cuales combinados con la gente que uno ama, pueden crear experiencias inolvidables. Ya hemos comenzado a planear nuestras prximas vacaciones y no hay duda de que incluir los mismos elementos de este viaje. As que, Por qu no probar el Camino de Golf de Baja? Le puedo prometer que amar cada minuto. Y por cierto, lo mejor es que no tenemos que preocuparnos por das de lluvia.

BOUNDED on one side by the Sea of Cortes, (named after the reputedly vicious Spanish conqueror of the 16th Century), and by the Tepre Pacificum or Pacific Ocean, the Peaceful Sea, on the other side, it comes as no surprise that the history of Baja California Sur, alive in the confluence of these contradictions, has a vibrant history both beautiful and brutal, both divisive and divine.
That history, in the modern sense, began and in some ways ended with the tenuous establishment of Spanish Catholic missions from 1683 to 1834 when the holy men came upon the shores in waves to spread the word. First the Jesuits, then the Franciscans and finally the Dominicans arrived and punctured the landscape in the name of the Church, under the aegis of the Pope and with the authority of the Crown. More than simply monuments to piety erected in the wilderness, these missions established commerce and trade routes, introduced farming and agriculture, and built communities. They also spread disease, violence and

ultimately - despair. Numbering in the dozens and never separated more than one days journey by horseback the missions of Baja Sur were the foundation for everything that would follow. Amongst the posh resorts and elegant restaurants of Baja Sur, these constructions in their literal sense still exist. You will find them on the plaza in San Jose del Cabo, in tiny Santiago off the beaten track, in bustling La Paz and in sleepy Todos Santos, and of course, Loreto. It takes only a little imagination, standing on those same stones perhaps laid centuries ago and gazing quietly into the clerestory above, to find your own connections to that time. Misin de Nuestra Seora de Loreto Conch Considered as the head and mother of all the Spanish missions in Upper and Lower California, Misin de Nuestra Seora de Loreto Conch is the first mission of both Baja Californias. It was established in 1697, after Hernan Cortez failed in the attempt to conquest La Paz in 1530, and the following 150 years of unsuccessful attempts to colonize Baja California. Loreto served as the base for further expansion of the Jesuit mission system, first in south-central Baja California and then to more remote portions of the peninsula both to the north and to the south. Loreto continued to be the headquarters even after the Jesuits were expelled from Baja California and replaced, first by the Franciscans in 1768 and then by the Dominicans in 1773. Mission Loreto came to an end in 1829, by which time the native Indian neophyte population throughout Baja California Sur had become extinct. Nuestra Seora del Pilar de La Paz Airap Mission The mission in La Paz was established by the Jesuit missionaries Juan de Ugarte and Jaime Bravo in 1720 at the location of the modern city of La Paz. La Paz itself was the location of some of the earliest Spanish activity in Baja California. In 1720 the Jesuits finally returned from Loreto to La Paz (or, Airap, as known in the local native dialect), coming both by land and by

sea in coordinated expeditions. However, the young mission did not last long and was sacked in 1734 by the widespread revolt of the Pericu natives. The remnants abandoned in 1748, any remaining faithful were sent overland to Todos Santos for safety and the mission itself sank back into the wilderness. The site of the original mission remains a mystery, but today La Catedral de Nuestra Senora de La Paz rests in the reverential glow of evening light on the hill above the Malecon. As Velasco Garden in the foreground fills with families and street vendors the Catedral evokes a sense of purpose and calm in this bustling city. A small white figurine, an angel eyes closed and hands clasped, stands on a ledge above the massive arched wooden door. Misin Santa Rosa de las Palmas The mission in Todos Santos was initially a subordinate station to the mission in La Paz. In 1733 it ascended to status as an independent mission under the guidance of Sigismundo Taraval. Taraval, born in Italy in 1700, was not only a pioneering Jesuit at that time, but he also wrote key histories of the area - perhaps most famously his account of the native revolt of 1734 that ended the history of many missions. In fact, the mission in Todos Santos was destroyed

La misin en Todos Santos era originalmente una estacin subordinada de la misin de La Paz. En 1733 ascendi al estatus de misin independiente bajo la gua de Sigismundo Taraval. Taraval, nacido en Italia en 1700, no solo era un pionero Jesuita, sino que tambin escribi momentos claves de la historia del rea, siendo tal vez la ms conocida su resea del levantamiento nativo en 1734, la cual termin con la historia de muchas misiones. in that uprising of the following year. It was rebuilt but ultimately abandoned in 1840. In the meantime Taraval traveled south to lead the missions of Santiago and San Jos del Cabo before leaving the peninsula for good. Misin de Santiago el Apstol In a shallow valley at the base of the mountains about thirty-five miles from San Jos del Cabo, the Italian Jesuit Ignacio Mara Npoli founded the Mission of Santiago in 1724 at the native settlement of Aiin. Ten years later Mission Santiago and then Father Lorenzo Jose Carranco became the first target of the Peric Revolt in 1734. Carranco entered martyrdom the hard way and the buildings were destroyed. Rebuilding efforts occurred, but the mission was ultimately abandoned during the Dominican period in 1795 and its remaining and faithful followers were relocated to San Jos del Cabo. Today the tidy red and white church tells the story of Santiago (a fanciful image of St. James, the towns patron saint and namesake sits colorfully above the door). The town itself is known as much for its mission as it is for the stunning waterfalls at the base of the mountains and the peculiar zoo set aside amongst the orchards and palms. Mission San Jos del Cabo The Jesuit Nicolas Tamaral established the Mission of San Jose del Cabo at the Peric settlement of Auit in 1730. But in the summer of 1734 Tamaral, who the Pericu shamans felt was overly impinging upon their long-standing luxury of having several wives, was (like Carranco in Santiago to the north) martyred in cruel fashion and the mission was destroyed. Today the mosaic above the faade depicts the fateful day. The mission was finally closed in 1840. Set directly on the wonderful town square the Mission of San Jose del Cabo Anuit is not only an important historic place, but also a place where the community still celebrates its faith and fullness of life with passion indicative of its colorful history. History in the making In a peaceful village of Buena Vista, nested conveniently among La Ribera and Los Barriles in the East Cape of Baja Sur, a new mission is in its making. One of the newest residential developments in the area, Misin Buena Vista, will build a certified replica of The Mission San Luis Gonzaga, a Jesuit mission established among the Guaycura people on the Magdalena Plains of central Baja California Sur. The Mission at Misin Buena Vista will offer regular services, and will surely become a great attraction and addition to the area. Besides the Mission, the development will present colonial town features conceptualized with traditional Hispanic architecture and culture, like El Zocalo, the central plaza, where residents and neighbors will entertain and gather. A FRIEND of mine was traveling South and Central America, stopped in Cabo San Lucas for 3 days, and just couldnt leave. Does it sound familiar? We all know similar stories of our friends, our friends friends and our neighbors how they ended up in Baja. Whats not to like here? Its safe, costs of living can be relatively cheap, theres no traffic, the nature is beautiful, we have a sea and an ocean, sun 350 days a year, and we are 2-4 hour flight away from many attractive capitals... In Baja, we have a stress free living. The only worry we have is if tomorrow will be good waves for surfing, and if the fishing will be good. You dont believe us? Lets look at some interesting facts.
SAFETY Mexico is the size of Western Europe, so what happens lets say in Portugal, doesnt need to be valid for Austria as well. Right? Therefore what happens in one Mexican city doesnt make it true for the whole country. There has been some bad publicity promoted by the US media about the security of certain Mexican cities, and then generalized as if it happened all over the country. If people are involved in illicit vocations, such as gun and drug trafficking, they face trouble. Otherwise, we can assure you by the demographics and reports, that there are less problems in all of Mexico than there are in some American cities like Boston, Phoenix, Los Angeles and Las Vegas, which, for example, report more murders per year than our whole country. And there is no travel warning issued by the US government for these beautiful cities. We can assure you that Baja California Sur is one of the safest places on Earth. The location, and its geographic characteristics themselves, do not make it profitable for any crime or related organization to survive here. We live in a wonderful peaceful place. UN AMIGO mo estaba viajando a Amrica Central y del Sur,

se detuvo en Cabo San Lucas por tres das, y simplemente no pudo dejar el lugar. Le suena familiar? Todos sabemos de historias similares de nuestros amigos, de los amigos de amigos y de nuestros vecinos, sobre cmo terminaron en Baja. Qu es lo que no hay para que no le guste? Es seguro, el costo de la vida es relativamente barato, no hay trfico, la naturaleza es hermosa, tenemos un mar y un ocano, sol los 350 das al ao y estamos de 2 a 4 horas en vuelo lejos de importantes ciudades en Baja, vivimos sin estrs. La nica preocupacin que tenemos es si maana habr buenas olas para surfear y si la pesca es buena. No nos cree? Veamos algunos datos interesantes. SEGURIDAD Mxico es del tamao de Europa Occidental, as que digamos que lo que pasa en Portugal, no necesariamente es vlido para Austria, Correcto? Por ello, lo que pasa en alguna ciudad en Mxico invariablemente no es cierto para todo el pas. Medios americanos han promovido una imagen negativa sobre la seguridad en algunas ciudades de Mxico, generalizndola como si esto ocurriera en todo el pas. Si alguien est involucrado en actividades ilcitas, usualmente el trfico de armas o de drogas, enfrentar las consecuencias. Por otro lado, los reportes estadsticos de poblacin nos permiten asegurar que hay menos problemas en todo Mxico de los que hay en algunas ciudades americanas como Boston, Phoenix, Los Angeles y Las Vegas; en cuales en un ao se reportan ms asesinatos de los que hay en todo Mxico. No obstante, el gobierno americano no ha emitido ninguna advertencia de viaje a sas hermosas ciudades. Podemos asegurar que Baja California Sur es uno de los lugares ms seguros en la tierra; su ubicacin geogrfica y caractersticas son desfavorables para la operacin de alguna organizacin criminal. Vivimos en un increble y tranquilo lugar. Global view turned to a local level, Sarahuaro Foundations solidarity and willingness to make things happen translates into the strengths and finally, smiles, of the local communities in need.

QU es lo que hace grande a un pas? Sus debilidades convertidas en fortalezas. Qu es lo que enriquece a una nacin? La solidaridad de su gente. Visto esto de forma local, la solidaridad de Fundacin Sarahuaro y su disposicin para lograr resultados se traduce en la fortaleza y las sonrisas de comunidades locales necesitadas.
Para la mayora, Los Cabos pareciera la tierra prometida. Increble naturaleza, hermoso clima, la pura vida y muchas oportunidades de trabajo. Pero no todos son tan afortunados en disfrutar las cosas buenas que el Sur de Baja tiene para ofrecer. El rea est experimentando un crecimiento demogrfico acelerado. Los trabajos en el rea de la construccin son prometedores e invitan a trabajadores de otras partes de Mxico a migrar a Los Cabos con sus familias en busca de una mejor calidad de vida. Muchos llegan en condiciones deplorables, sin dinero y sin trabajo, con la esperanza de un mejor futuro que muchas veces no se materializa. Mientras esperan que la situacin mejore, las familias encuentran hospedaje temporal en reas marginadas en condiciones de pobreza extrema. Algo similar sucede con los nios y jvenes del rea, quienes en vista de las condiciones en su casa, dejan la escuela para integrarse a la fuerza laboral. Un grupo de mujeres vio la necesidad de ste grupo, por lo que decidi apoyarlos a travs de clases donde pudieran desarrollar sus habilidades y obtuvieran las herramientas de trabajo necesarias para ser auto-suficientes. Comenz hace 6 aos con un grupo de seoras las cuales se reunan en una calle en las zonas marginadas de Cabo San Lucas a dar clases de lectoescritura, matemticas y desarrollo humano. Poco a poco se fue corriendo el rumor de stas seoras y es ah cuando nace Fundacin Sarahuaro, una asociacin civil sin fines de lucro cuyo objetivo es fomentar los valores en personas de bajos recursos, a la vez que busca apoyar con acciones de crecimiento personal a nios, mujeres y hombres. La calle ya no era suficiente conforme la asistencia creca, por lo que autoridades locales apoyaron prestndoles un espacio donde pudieran desarrollar las clases y cubrirse del abrasador sol. Paso a paso, y con el esfuerzo de voluntarias, manos amigas, empresarios y hoteleros locales, se logr tener un espacio el cual funcionara como saln de clases para plticas, talleres y conferencias, adems de contar con una pequea oficina y bodega.

Los Cabos to most of us looks like a promised land. Stunning nature, beautiful weather, pura vida, and plentiful of working opportunities. But not all are lucky to enjoy only the good things Baja Sur has to offer. Los Cabos is undergoing accelerated demographic growth. Jobs in the construction area are promising and inviting for workers from all parts of Mexico, who migrate to Los Cabos with their whole families looking for a better quality of life. Many arrive in deplorable condition, penniless and unemployed, with hopes for a better future that may fail to materialize. While waiting for their situation to improve, families often find temporary housing in shanty towns under subhuman conditions. Similar happens to children and youngsters from the area, which due to poor conditions at home, leave school early and join the labor force. A group of women saw the needs of the people, and decided to support them by giving classes, where they could develop their capabilities and get the necessary working tools to become selfsufficient. It all began 6 years ago with a group of women that gathered in one of the streets of margined zones of Cabo San Lucas, to give literacy, math and human development classes to the children and families of the neighborhood. Little by little, the word began to spread about these ladies, and it was then when Sarahuaro Foundation was created, a nonprofit civil association whose objective is to stimulate and motivate the values of low income people, while working in activities for the human growth of children, women and men. Soon the street was not enough. More and more people began to attend workshops and classes, so the local authorities helped by lending a space where the classes could be held in decent conditions and with a shelter from the heat. Step by step, and with the help of volunteers, helping friends, businessmen and local hoteliers, Sarahuaro now has a space for meetings, classes, storage and an office.

The class attendance was growing constantly, mostly by single women and children, which made the director board committee of Sarahuaro realize the importance of helping people to develop an activity and knowledge, which will allow them to become selfsufficient and receive an extra income. Additional workshops were integrated into the courses: values for youngsters, creativity, knitting, sewing, embroidery, early stimulation and physical condition. The results are a lot of beautiful crafts like embroidered tortilla warmers, knitted belts and quilts of very original designs. These items have helped participants with their human progress and self-esteem, allowing the Foundation to get funds, to grow and help the students become self-sufficient. Sarahuaro starts its teaching cycle at the beginning of the year and is open to children, teenagers, women and men who commit to attend conscientiously and to honor the guidelines of punctuality, order, cleanness and respect the foundation. As the year progresses, the different workshops advance while celebrating the different holidays in Mexico. Once the year is about to end, they organize a closing event and evaluation of the achievements. At a traditional yearly Sarahuaro Bazaar in November, all the artwork and craftsmanship done throughout the year is displayed for sale. Part of the profit is for the artists and the other part is for financing the foundation. It is admirable to see how much it has been made by a group of women committed to its community. The work has been arduous, the effort is constant, but the results are pleasing and more and more tangible: literate women with an evolving self-esteem, children with strong values and desire to learn, and entire families with an extra income, obtained through activities that encourage their creativity. Sarahuaro Foundations only incomes are funds from sales of craft items and donations from the general public. Your support as a volunteer or a teacher, with donations of money or products is always welcome. Visit the Sarahuaro center, participate at a workshop or a class, and buy the different items made with all the love and hope of the women and children of Sarahuaro. There is a long road ahead when dealing with the issue of poverty in Los Cabos, but every helping hand is accepted with open hearts and big smiles.

Conforme el nmero de asistentes aumentaba, en su gran mayora madres solteras y jvenes, la mesa directiva de la fundacin se dio cuenta de la importancia de ayudarlas a que desarrollaran habilidades y alguna actividad que les permitiera recibir un ingreso extra; es por ello que comenzaron a impartir talleres como: valores para jvenes, creatividad, arte textil, estimulacin temprana y acondicionamiento fsico, entre otros. Las creaciones que han hecho van desde sencillos tortilleros bordados, hasta cintos y colchas de diseos originales. Esto ha contribuido con su desarrollo y autoestima y le permite a la fundacin obtener fondos para continuar creciendo y a que los alumnos se vuelvan autosuficientes. Sarahuaro comienza su ciclo de actividades a principio de ao y est abierto tanto a nios, jvenes, mujeres y hombres quienes se comprometan a asistir responsablemente y cumplir con el reglamento de puntualidad, orden, limpieza y respeto. Conforme avanza el ao se van desarrollando los talleres, adems de que se celebran los diferentes das feriados tradicionales en Mxico. Al finalizar el ao, se realiza un cierre de actividades y evalan los logros alcanzados. En el tradicional bazar de Noviembre, las piezas de bordado y artesanas hechas durante el ao se exponen para su venta. Una parte de las ganancias es para quienes lo hicieron y otra es para el financiamiento de la fundacin.

Los ingresos de Fundacin Sarahuaro provienen de las ganancias en la venta de las artesanas, al igual que los donativos del pblico en general. Su apoyo como voluntario, maestro o con donaciones en dinero y especie siempre es bienvenido. Lo invitamos a que visite sus instalaciones, participe en algn taller o clase y que compre los diferentes artculos hechos con todo el amor y esperanza de las mujeres y nios de Sarahuaro. Todava queda un largo camino por recorrer cuando se trata de combatir la pobreza en Los Cabos, pero cada mano que ayuda es aceptada con un corazn abierto y una gran sonrisa.

HAVE you ever been to Italy? I have, many times in fact. Being from Slovenia, a neighboring country, Saturday trips to Italy with my friends have been our little pleasures. After a pleasant day, our necessary ritual was going to a local osteria, sitting at a square table with a red and white table cloth, having un bicchiere di vino and a fresh home made ravioli, tortellini, media lunas, lasagna, or gnocchi, and engaging in conversation with the friendly waiter, who was waiving his hands all the time as if he would talk with them. he used to tell us when he noticed that we talked more than ate. Thats why I was excited even more than usual when Grupo Solmar invited me to meet the Italian chefs of El Galeon and Romeo y Julieta, two well known Mediteranean and Italian restaurants in Cabo San Lucas. After a couple of years of living in Baja and neglecting my trips to Italy and with it practicing italiano, my Italian got a little bit rusty, but still it was such a pleasure engaging in conversation with the chefs and listening to their melodic Italian accompanied by hand gestures. It almost felt like being back home. Raffaele Dimaio, Executive Chef of restaurants El Galeon and Romeo y Julieta, was the first Italian in Cabo San Lucas. He came here 25 years ago, when the only ingredient for Italian cuisine was the wild basil growing around freely. He brought the Italian flavor to Baja, the locals and visitors liked it, and soon more Italian restaurants started to open. A couple of years ago, Don Raffaelle was joined by Matias Forte, and recently by Christian Ricci. Matias is the Chef at Romeo y Julieta and Christian is the Chef at El Galeon. Passionate about cooking as only Italians can be, the three chefs took me behind the curtains to their domain and prepared some of their specialties. Despus de unos aos de vivir en Baja, de olvidar mis viajes de fin de semana a Italia y no practicar su idioma, el cual se oxid un poco, fue un gran placer el platicar con los chefs y escuchar su meldico italiano acompaado de sus gestos con la mano. Casi sent estar en casa. Raffaele Dimaio, Chef Ejecutivo de los restaurantes Galen y Romeo y Julieta, fue el primer italiano en Cabo San Lucas. Lleg hace 25 aos, cuando el nico ingrediente de la cocina italiana era la albahaca que creca libremente en el rea. THERE are as many legends of Mexico as there are Mexicans and

lovers of this beautiful and rich country. There is one legend that most of us do not know, but we would love to share with the world: the story of the legendary spirit, tequila.. Many centuries ago in Mexico, there was a big thunderstorm and a lightning hit an agave plant field, burning them down to their core. Once the storm had passed, a soft and sweet smell lingered and people discovered a syruplike liquid within the agaves core. Someone tasted the liquid and enjoyed it, and then stored it later. He set it aside and over time saw that there was thick foam on it. After ditching the foam, the liquid had developed a richer and stronger flavor, and he drank it. Legend says it changed his personality, which led the people to believe that it was a gift from the goddess Mayahuel, a symbol of ancient fertility and drunkenness. This drink was then reserved for the lords and priests for use in different religious events and festivities. Later, after the Spaniards conquered Mexico, they decided to distill the drink and it came to be called aguardiente, in a little town in New Galicia (later called Jalisco). Local producers of the area continued to refine, age and produce the drink, increasing its popularity, and it began to be known for its birthplaces name, Tequila. The alluring fragrance of tequila has seduced many over the years, and countless love songs and heartbreaking poems have been written inspired by this unique drink. But what makes it so popular and such an icon of the Mexican culture? It is said that during the Independence War, Mexican Revolution and many other battles, Tequila was the drink

Hace ya varios siglos en Mxico hubo una tormenta elctrica y un rayo alcanz una plantacin de agave, quemndola por completo. Una vez que la tormenta pas, un suave y dulce aroma permaneci en el ambiente, y la gente descubri un lquido dentro de los restos del agave. Uno de ellos lo prob y fue de su agrado, por lo que lo almacen en su casa. Con el paso del tiempo se dio cuenta de que se haba formado espuma sobre el lquido. Una vez retirada la espuma, el lquido haba desarrollado un sabor mucho ms rico y fuerte, y lo bebi. La leyenda dice que su personalidad cambi, lo cual llev a la gente a pensar que era un regalo de la diosa Mayahuel, un smbolo ancestral de fertilidad y embriaguez. Esta bebida fue entonces reservada para los reyes y sacerdotes para su uso en eventos religiosos. Despus, cuando los espaoles conquistaron Mxico, decidieron destilar la bebida, la cual se conoci como aguardiente, dentro de un pueblo en Nueva Galicia (posteriormente conocido como Jalisco). Los productores locales continuaron destilando, aejando y produciendo la bebida, incrementando su popularidad por lo que comenz a llamarse como su lugar de origen, Tequila.

of choice of the men. Tradition grew as to celebrate victories with it and over time, it became a drink of celebration for all Mexican festivities. Probably, and because of this tradition, no other word is so intimately associated with celebrations, traditions, colors, flavors and Mexico itself. This much appreciated drink is distinguished by its production and aging process, its region and the choice of plant from which it comes. In order to be tequila, it must be distilled from Agave Tequilana Weber Variedad Azul (blue agave), as it is the variety of agave suited for its production within some municipalities of the designated tequila area: Jalisco, Guanajuato, Michoacan, Tamaulipas and Nayarit. Its production begins with the harvesting of the best agave plants. Only its core can be used to produce the drink. After steaming, fermenting and distilling the plant, and depending on the type of tequila that is desired, it is stored in different barrels for fixed times to give tequila its distinguishing flavor. Although basically there are two categories of tequila, the industry has created different varieties to please all palates, the following are the most commonly known: White or Silver. Un-aged tequila bottled no more than two months after its distillation and with the characteristic blue agave flavor. Young or Gold. It is the preferred choice for a Margarita, and has been softened with flavors such as caramel. Reposado or Rested. White tequila that has been left aging from two months and up to a year in oak barrels. Aejo or Aged. Aged from one to three years in small oak barrels, with a woody flavor and amber color. Extra-Aejo or Ultra-Aged tequila has been aged for a period of more than three years, in direct contact with the wood of oak. Both white and young tequila tend to be harsher and bold in flavors, while the rested and (ultra) aged varieties offer a smoother and more complex flavor. There are probably four elements or traditions that unquestionably relate to tequila: a caballito, a classic small glass used to drink it. It is said that years ago, landlords would go out to the fields with a jug of tequila and a bull horn cut into a v-shaped glass into which the

Es el preferido para hacer Margaritas y ha sido suavizado con sabores como el caramelo. Reposado. Tequila blanco que se ha dejado aejar de dos meses hasta un ao en barriles de roble. Aejo. Ha sido aejado de uno a mximo tres aos en pequeos barriles de roble, lo cual le da un sabor a madera y un color mbar. Extra aejo. Ha sido aejado por un periodo mayor a tres aos en contacto directo con la madera de roble. Tanto el blanco como el joven tienden a ser un tanto fuertes y audaces en el sabor, mientras que el reposado y el aejo ofrecen un sabor ms suave y complejo. Hay probablemente cuatro elementos que incuestionablemente se relacionan con el tequila: el caballito, un clsico vasito de vidrio utilizado para beberse. tequila was poured as to drink it fast and straight, while riding the caballito (while horseback riding). Another tradition is to drink it with salt and lemon, to smooth tequilas artisanal strong flavor. There is also the Sangrita, an original drink from Chapala, Jalisco, that used to be the perfect tequila companion, originally made with oranges, salt and chili but throughout the decades, the recipe has evolved and it is now commonly found made with tomatoes. And probably the most iconic element associated with tequila is the Margarita, a fresh and sizzling drink that, rumor has it, began in Acapulco when socialite Margarita Sames was experimenting in its haciendas bar for a drink that would refresh her guests in a hot evening. She ended up mixing lime juice with tequila and triple sec, served it in a salt-rimed glass and well the rest is history. Drinking tequila is a feast for all senses: from admiring its shiny colors to smelling the oak in which it was aged and tasting the sweet caramel or spices sometimes used. This drink is greatly appreciated in Mexico and other countries, as it is a gift from Mexicos ancestors to the world. Did you know? The word agave means noble or admirable in Greek. Tequila is an Appellation of Origin; it indicates that has to be made within some municipalities in Mexico and has to contain at least 51% of blue agave, the rest can contain both fructose and glucose. The best tequilas are made of 100% agave. When drinking tequila, experts recommend serving it in a proper glass: for white use the caballito, drink rested from a sherryglass and aged from a cognac glass. Tequila Regulatory Council approved an official tequila glass in 2002 called the Ouverture Tequila glass, made by Riedel. Rested and aged tequilas are best enjoyed straight. It is not true that tequila has a worm. Only certain mezcals, usually from the state of Oaxaca, are ever sold con gusano.

Beber tequila es un placer para todos los sentidos: desde admirar sus brillantes colores, percibir el olor del roble en el cual fue aejado, hasta probar el dulce caramelo o las especies utilizadas. Esta bebida es altamente apreciada en Mxico y otros pases, ya que es un regalo de los ancestros de Mxico para el mundo. Saba que: La palabra agave significa noble en griego. Tequila es una Denominacin de Origen, la cual indica que debe ser hecho dentro de la regin establecida en Mxico y debe contener al menos 51% de agave azul, el resto puede contener fructosa y glucosa. Los mejores tequilas estn hechos de 100% agave. Cuando beba tequila, los expertos recomiendan servirlo correctamente: para el blanco utilizar el caballito, el reposado en un vaso de jerez y el aejado en un vaso de coac. El Consejo Regulador del Tequila aprob en el 2002 la copa tequilera oficial, llamada copa tequilera Ouverture, hecha por Riedel. El reposado y aejo se disfrutan mejor si se beben directo. No es cierto que el tequila tiene gusano. Solo algunos mezcales, usualmente los de Oxaca, son vendidos con gusano.

EL TIEMPO DE LOS JVENES ARQUITECTOS Y LA ARQUITECTURA TIL

THE RECESSION buried all the promises of big architecture works and urban projects in a country which has not enough infrastructure. The municipal deficit -they spend more than they produce- and the scarce perspectives of improvement transformed this recession in the best excuse to rethink the architects mission. This as a consequence of the last years of public expenditure in emblematic projects because of their cost, size or because of the controversy unleashed around them. We ended the cult to the big stars. The new generations of architects now account for most of international prizes. Against the genius and daring, efficiency is demanded. The crisis has also allowed to rethink construction methods and to ask if the biggest names in the profession do the best projects. As seen in the last years, the answer is no. Around the world, young architects are gathering the most recent architecture prizes, competing even against Pritzker laureates. Making clear that architectural audacity, the genius or the search for public qualities doesnt make the best dwellings. In the housing blocks in popular neighborhoods, the work cant be seen. You live inside. It barely shows in specialized magazines, but it changes the life of the citizens. Why the most renowned architects cant sign the best dwellings? In the Pritzker list, from Gehry and Foster to Barragn, only the portuguese Siza has done social housing. Its curious, not even Oscar Niemeyer (openly communist) has worried to do social housing. Its about adjustment, even the fees, the young architects say. Times change and we feel we need to support architects with work opportunities and open competitions, the progressive-thinking politicians reply. Some governments now consider that young architects are the ones with stronger push and the most innovative and inventive and willing to break boundaries, but they assure this doesnt always translate into better dwellings. The latest architecture awards say the opposite. SUMMER-FALL / VERANO-OTOO 2011 A lot of designers agree that the problem lies in realizing the single building where the dwell locates is not what changes the life of this people, it is a key fact to see how this building relates with its neighborhood. We have been worried many years for an architecture of objects instead of worrying about design as the extension of the city. Now we need to repair. New generations focus on repair. Does break and disengage, reflect us like society? It is more intelligent to change things based on what already exists because we know how it functions. This is applicable to a society, we (the young) want to reshape a non functional rigid urbanism, we want it to dialogue again with the landscape. We start to see small changes that make us think and dream that after many years of cult to the autistic building, architecture starts to reconnect with society and also with the place; however, theres still a previous urbanistic DNA that makes this change not that easy. It would be interesting to propose ideas that reshape these patterns (that radically differentiates the public to the private realms) and to allow to generate intermediate spaces that recover the dialogue between architecture, the street and its context. Esto como consecuencia de los ltimos aos de gasto pblico colosal en obras emblemticas por su coste, por su tamao o por la polmica desencadenada en torno a ellas. La crisis acaba con el culto a las construcciones de las grandes estrellas - Las nuevas generaciones de arquitectos copan hoy los premios internacionales Frente al genio y la osada, se demanda eficacia. La crisis tambin ha servido para poner en crisis tipos de construccin y para preguntarse si so n los arquitectos de ms renombre los que firman los mejores proyectos. Por lo visto, en los ltimos aos la respuesta es que no. En el mundo, equipos jvenes concentran los ms recientes galardones de arquitectura en los que han competido con profesionales galardonados con el premio Pritzker. Ha quedado claro que la osada arquitectnica, el genio o la bsqueda de cualidades pblicas no hace las mejores viviendas. En los bloques de vivienda en los barrios populares, el trabajo no se ve. Se vive dentro. Apenas sale en las revistas, pero cambia la vida de los ciudadanos. Por qu los arquitectos ms reconocidos no firman las mejores viviendas? En la lista de los Pritzker, de Gehry a Foster pasando por Barragn, solo el portugus lvaro Siza ha levantado vivienda social. Pero no deja de ser curioso que ni siquiera el arquitecto comunista Oscar Niemeyer se haya preocupado por levantar vivienda social. Se trata de ajustarse en todo, incluidos los honorarios, dicen los arquitectos jvenes. Los tiempos cambian y sentimos que debemos apoyar a los arquitectos con concursos abiertos y puestos de trabajo, responden los polticos innovadores. Algunos gobiernos consideran ahora que los arquitectos jvenes son los que tienen mayor empuje y ms ganas de innovar y romper pautas, pero aseguran que eso no se traduce en mejores viviendas. Los ltimos premios de arquitectura prueban lo contrario. Son muchos los proyectistas que coinciden en que el problema radica en que lo que cambia la vida de la gente no es solo el edificio de su vivienda. Es clave cmo se relaciona este con el barrio. Hemos pasado muchos aos preocupados por una arquitectura de objetos en lugar de preocuparnos de disear la ampliacin de la ciudad. Ahora nos toca reparar. Las nuevas generaciones se han concentrado en reparar. Romper, desencajar nos retrata como sociedad? Es ms inteligente cambiar las cosas a partir de lo existente y conocido, pues sabemos cmo funciona. Eso es aplicable a una sociedad, pero los jvenes queremos remodelar un urbanismo rgido que no funciona. Queremos que vuelva a dialogar con el paisaje e introducir el sol como motor de las viviendas. Empezamos a vislumbrar algunos cambios que hacen pensar que despus de muchos aos de culto al edificio autista, la arquitectura comienza a reconectar con la sociedad y tambin con el lugar; sin embargo, todava hay un ADN urbanstico previo que dificulta este cambio. Sera interesante plantear propuestas que modifiquen ese patrn (que diferencia radicalmente lo pblico y lo privado) y que permitieran generar espacios intermedios que retomen el dilogo con la calle.
