    1967.Sincethen,useofSimplexantiphonsintheU.S.hasbeenlimited,butat
    leastonescholarhaswrittenthattheSimplexdidexertaconsiderableeffecton
    theAlleluiabeforetheGospel.

    weresizablemelismaticchants.WhenusageoftheGradualeRomanumdeclined,
    theSimplexapproachofsubstitutingashort,tripleAlleluiawasadopted
    widelyasthenewdefault.Useoftheactualmelodieswasnot.
    WhateverthefaultsoftheoverallapproachoftheSimplex,itsAlleluiasaregood
    examplesofmodalmelody.Somearesomber,somehaunting.Theyalsohave
    interestingrhythmicvarietyifonepayscarefulattentiontogroupsoftwoand
    three.
