One of Gleaners greatest pleasures is to open the box and nd food, or money, or sometimes a persons time and talent. Whatever we nd we put to good use to help our neighbors in need. For nearly three decades, Gleaners Food Bank of Indiana has been soliciting, collecting and redistributing food to charities feeding the hungry. In scal year 2007-2008 alone, we distributed 15,933,731 pounds of food and critical grocery products to 430 charities in a 20-county area. Since our incorporation in 1980, weve distributed nearly 230 million pounds of product. Housed in a 100-year old warehouse building, Gleaners is a 501 (c) (3) not-for-prot and member of Feeding America (formerly Americas Second Harvest). Gleaners not only provides food to charities for people trying to make ends meet, but also food and supplies to those recovering from natural disasters. In 2007, Gleaners was instrumental in getting emergency supplies to 17 counties, of the 20 we serve, that were affected by the tornados and ooding. Gleaners is here to serve the community our community your community. Thank you!
Your support, your compassion in action and your gifts made it possible for thousands of hungry Hoosiershalf of them children and seniorsto receive lifesaving emergency food assistance throughout 20 Central Indiana counties. I want to take this opportunity to personally express my deep gratitude for your belief in our mission and to update you on our progress in the ght against hunger in Indiana. First, you helped us provide a record amount of food and critical grocery products to over 400 charitable hunger relief programs feeding needy Hoosiers in our 20 Indiana county service area. The equivalent of 8.7 million meals was distributed to emergency food pantries, soup kitchens, homeless shelters and food programs for hungry children and seniors. Food we shared with other food banks brought our total 2008 distribution to the equivalent of 12.8 million meals! I wish I could tell you that we are meeting the current need, but in truth, the growth in our food distribution over the last three yearsup 14% since 2006hasnt kept up with the growing number of Hoosiers who need food assistance. That is why were working harder than ever to secure the additional food resources needed by our hungry neighbors. We are collaborating with community partners on two additional initiatives to help serve more hungry Hoosiers: Our good friends at The Kroger Company chose us to be the rst Indiana food bank to participate in Krogers Perishable Donation Partnership. We are making weekly pickups of nutritious perishable food at Krogers retail stores throughout central Indiana. The Interfaith Hunger Initiative is an exciting new collaboration between faith communities in Indianapolis. Congregations of all faith traditions are seeking to collectively raise $150,000 next year to fund the Interfaith Hunger Initiative Pantry Partnership, a program designed to help local pantries expand access to emergency food resources for families in need. Second, many friends helped us expand our childrens programs for at-risk kids. In 2008, through Kids Caf after-school program, we provided 44,258 nutritious meals to hungry children in a safe and nurturing environment. Were currently serving 2,070 children with a weekly backpack full of nutritious, kidfriendly food for the weekend when they dont have access to school breakfast and lunch. Third, with your help and others, we continue to serve another very vulnerable population: seniors at risk of hunger. In partnership with the State of Indiana and the U.S. Department of Agriculture, we are providing a monthly, 40-pound box of nutritious, supplemental food to nearly 4,000 needy seniors. Without this program many of these elderly neighbors would be forced to choose between paying for medicine and eating. As long as hunger continues to stalk our most vulnerable neighborswith your dedication to our shared missionwe will work together until every bowl is lled! Hoosiers are truly generous in helping their fellow human beings in need. Here are a few examples When devastating tornadoes, oods and hurricanes upended the lives of our neighborsboth near and farwe were able to respond with critically needed emergency food, water, cleaning products and other supplies provided through Feeding America, our nations food bank network. People in 17 of the 20 counties in Gleaners service area were affected by the historic oods in June. Between June and September Gleaners distributed over 183,000 pounds of food and emergency supplies to Hoosiers overwhelmed by natural disasters. In response to the destruction of Hurricane Gustav we shipped the equivalent of eight tractor-trailer loads of emergency relief supplies to the food banks serving New Orleans, Baton Rouge and Mobile. We continue to be blessed by the amazing generosity of friends and mission partners. Over the last ve years the number of individuals, foundations, corporations, congregations and service organizations that have made yearly gifts to Gleaners is up nearly six fold, from 3,701 donors in 2004 to 21,466 donors in 2008. Hoosiers are indeed responding to the economic challenges that we are facing across Indiana today. I am proud that Gleaners has continued to be a careful steward of donors precious nancial resources. We operated in the black once again in Fiscal 2008. In fact, we have operated in the black for the last three years. I am also pleased to report that according to our most recent audit, 94% of all resources donated to Gleaners went directly to hunger relief programs and services, with only 6% going to administration and fund raising. Reverend Karen L. King is the Associate Rector for Mission and Outreach at Trinity Episcopal Church in Indianapolis. The people of Trinity Church have been nancial donors and mission partners of Gleaners since the food banks founding in 1980. For the past ve years, Trinitys Outreach Grants Committee has awarded grants to Gleaners to underwrite the full cost of food distributions to needy families through Gleaners Mobile Pantry. So far, this partnership has resulted in 25 food distributions totaling 149,422 pounds of food and critical grocery products to thousands of food insecure people in the mid-north Indianapolis neighborhoods surrounding the churchs campus at 33rd and Meridian Streets. Financial donors such as Trinity help Gleaners Food Bank meet the increasing expenses associated with operating costs and food distribution. In scal year 2007-08, the average cost for food recovery, transportation, quality assurance, inventory control, insurance, utilities, supervision and coordination of hundreds of volunteers, plus training and technical assistance for user charities and community education was 15 cents per pound. For every dollar donated, Gleaners Food Bank can distribute the equivalent of six meals to those in need.

KIDS CAFE/BACKSACKS
Approximately 70 children at the Edna Martin Christian Center on Indianapolis near east side participate in both Gleaners Kids Cafe and BackSacks...Weekend Food For Kids programs. These children, living in low income areas, are at risk of hunger. There are currently 55,000 children living in poverty in Marion county and 80,000 children living in poverty in Gleaners 20 county service area. Thats why Gleaners youth programs are vital to the future of our community. Kids Cafe provides an after-school heavy snack or light meal to children in low-income areas and provides them with a safe place that enables them to participate in educational and recreational activities. During 2007-2008, 44,258 meals were served to children at six sites. BackSacks...Weekend Food For Kids provides food to children who dont have access to regular nutritious meals at home on the weekends or when school meals and other food distribution programs are not available. Children attending Gleaners BackSacks program receive a sack of food each Thursday or Friday that contains nutritious, kid-friendly food items to take home with them for the weekend. During scal year 2007-2008, 28,053 weekend bags of food were distributed to nearly 2,000 children at 14 sites. With continued support from the community, Gleaners will be able to serve 2,500 children by the end the 08-09 school year.

COMMODITY SUPPLEMENTAL FOOD PROGRAM

Like many of the seniors who live at Bethany Village on the citys south side, Lupe Morado, Iris Bennett, Beuford Collins, Marjorie Hornberger, and Barb Miles participate in Gleaners Commodity Supplement Food Program (CSFP). Led by Barb (far right) this group not only receives the boxes but assists in the delivery to their neighbors who are home bound! The Commodity Supplemental Food Program is sponsored by Gleaners and the State Board of Health through the USDA. Enrollment for scal year 2007-08 was 3,776 seniors who beneted from the program. Hoosiers, age 60 and above, who reside in Daviess, Knox, Marion, Putnam, Rush and Vermillion counties and have incomes at or below 130% of poverty are eligible for the supplemental food program. Many of the individuals have had to make critical choices between paying the mortgage, purchasing medicine or buying groceries. Unfortunately, they often have no money left at the end of the month to purchase food. CSFP helps by providing eligible seniors with approximately 40 pounds of food each month. The food is packaged in individual boxes containing high protein items, grains, vegetables, juices, a two-pound block of cheese, and nutritional information.

MOBILE PANTRY
Gleaners Mobile Pantry traveled to the Morgan County Fairgrounds in Martinsville during the ooding in June of 2008. Volunteers distributed much needed food and cleaning supplies to area ood victims straight off the truck. Gleaners Mobile Pantries operate through local charities and eliminate the need for the charities to handle, transport and store the food on their premises. The Mobile Pantries are food pantries on wheels. They can deliver between 5,000 and 10,000 pounds of food and critical grocery products directly to a site designated by the sponsoring charity. Clients are invited to visit the pantry to choose from a variety of food offerings for their families. This works especially well for nutritious, fresh produce, moving it quickly before it spoils, and eliminating the need for charities to handle it multiple times or store it in expensive refrigerated space. The Mobile Pantries also serve the community in times of emergency, such as providing relief for the ood victims in Martinsville. The Mobile Pantries can quickly transport bottled water, paper products and basic foods to low-income people who have suffered losses they simply cannot afford.

CREATIVE STREET MEDIA GROUP

The Creative Street Media Group gave of their time and talent to the food bank. Ashley Rister, Steven Katzenberger, Marty Foster, Dave Smith and Becky Fisher joined their creative forces to produce a video about Gleaners and the people we serve. The compelling and emotionally moving video was debuted at Gleaners Harvest Moon Gala for the nearly 400 donors in attendance. In-kind donations, like the video made by Creative Street, include gifts of equipment, materials, supplies and services that help us in the day-to-day operation of running a food bank. These donations are so valuable because they enable Gleaners to stretch the cash gifts received for the redistribution of donated products. In-kind donations can be gifts of warehouse equipment such as fork lifts, pallet jacks and racks, vehicles, ofce equipment and ofce supplies. Services could include painting, plumbing, facility repairs, electrical work, landscaping, printing, design work, transportation and special expertise. All help serve to alleviate some of the nancial stress of the food bank allowing us to distribute more food to Hoosiers in need.

SARAH EMERSON
Sarah Emerson, EdD is a Doctor and Professor Emeritus from Indiana State University and a food bank volunteer. Dr. Emerson is Gleaners liaison to Indianas Ead Free Initiative, a monitor for the Kids Cafe and BackSack programs; and provides technical assistance to the food bank. Volunteers like Sarah are essential to the food banks work. They help in every aspect of food banking: ProductionGleaners production volunteers are trained to sort and repack food bank critical grocery products. Because so much salvage is processed at the food bank, it is important to have production volunteers working each day Monday through Friday. Occasionally, weekend and evening crews are required. Distributiondistribution volunteers are required to process the nearly 400 active hunger relief charities product orders. It is a full-time job shared by lots of volunteers on a daily basis. Clerical Assistancevolunteers help Gleaners accurately maintain its records and les. Research, mailings, and date entry are also regular volunteer duties. Speakers Bureau Representativesvolunteers assist by visiting church groups, neighborhood groups, schools and other institutions to tell the food banks story. Individuals are matched with various groups and volunteer training is arranged through Gleaners Development Department. Special Eventsvolunteers assist Gleaners with special events throughout the year that include food drives and a variety of fund raisers.

KROGER COMPANY
As the Kroger Company worked diligently to reopen its ood-damaged Martinsville store (pictured on the following page) and care for its affected associates, the company remained good corporate citizens. Under the leadership of Kroger Central Division President Bob Moeder (pictured above) 160 pallets of food, totaling seven truckloads, were donated to the food bank. All of the Martinsville store food that was not damaged was salvaged by Gleaners staff and volunteers. After being transported to the food bank, the product was sorted and redistributed to charities in ood affected areas and throughout Gleaners service area. This donation was only a small portion of the food that comes to Gleaners on a regular basis by the Kroger Company. In 2008, the Kroger Company was voted to receive Gleaners Mission Vital Partner Award for their support over the past 28 years. A variety of food and critical grocery items are donated by a large array of companies and thousands of individuals. Donations include items like meat, fresh produce, dairy products, beverages, frozen foods, canned vegetables, cereals, personal care products and diapers. These food and critical grocery items are donated by people who want to help and corporate donors who may have mislabeled or close-to-code products. Contributions are received from individuals, as well as local and national sources including Feeding America (formerly Americas Second Harvest).

Melvin and Patty Clark have been running the First Church of the Nazarene food pantry in Martinsville for over two decades. When Martinsville was devastated by ooding in the summer of 2008, the pantry was able to stay open even though Melvin and Pattys own home was severely damaged by ood waters. A hunger relief charity of Gleaners, the pantry distributed emergency food and cleaning supplies to those affected in the Morgan County area. With approximately 213,000 people living in poverty in Gleaners 20-county service area, hunger relief charities play a vital roll in Gleaners operation. Over 400 active user charities within the Gleaners network, including emergency shelters, emergency and non-emergency food pantries, soup kitchens, non-prot child care centers and after school programs, distribute food and critical grocery items to individuals and families in need. These charities are the link between the food bank and hungry Hoosiers. Thanks to their hard work and dedication, families, children and seniors are receiving the food assistance they need to sustain healthily lives and help make ends meet.
