Ecuadors Pursuit of Iidentity in the Literary Work of G.A. Jcome
The article offers a study of the prose works of the Ecuadorian writer Gustavo
Alfredo Jcome (born 1912), treated as an instance of literary inquest into the
countrys controversial ethnocultural identity. Special attention is given to the novel
Why did herons leave, which, pursuing the line of the indigenista fiction, addresses
the problem of how to combine tradition and modernity in the life of Ecuadors
indigenous population, including the emergence of an American Indian intellectual
lite while maintaining, at the same time, Ecuadorian uniqueness rooted in the Incas
cultural heritage. The novel represents a case of a conscious construction of literary
tradition through intertextuality by invoking J.L. Meras Cumand, a classical
Ecuadorian novel, which is treated by G.A. Jcome as archetypical for the national
literary mytheme of incest, crucial for his view of the problem of national identity as
an insoluble one, at least for the time being.
Key words: identity, Ecuadorian prose, indigenismo, Gustavo Alfredo Jcome,
incest mytheme.

SEARCHING FOR THE ECUADORIAN IDENTITY IN THE PROSE OF
G.A. JCOME
The article deals with the prose of Ecuadorian writer Gustavo Alfredo Jcome (1912)
in a context of literary interpretation of the problems of ethnocultural identity of the
country. The basic attention is given to the novel Why the herons left which, being

concomitant with the indigenista novel, raises a problem of how to combine the
tradition and modernity in the indigenous population of Ecuador. In particular, the
author questions the raising up of the American Indian intelligentsia, and
simultaneously a problem of Ecuadorian originality on a basis of the incaic cultural
inheritance. The novel is an example of a conscious modelling the literary tradition
through the intertext of the J.L. Meras Cumand, a classical Ecuadorian novel,
which is presented by G.A. Jcome as archetypical for a national literary mythologem
of incest, a key one in his vision of national identity as an insoluble problem for a
while.
Key words: identity, Ecuadorian prose, indigenismo, Gustavo Jcome, incest
mythologem.
